This has been one of the most useful lessons I have watched, never really understood amp settings and the relationship between pedals and amps. Could you do a lesson on effects please?

This is fabulous. I have just purchased a 59 Bassman and at rehearsal last night, I discovered that not all things are equal. My levels for each pedal were all over the shop. It distressed me a lot thinking I would have to return the amp. Of course this makes perfect sense. So now Ill set the amp to the clean setting that works for my ears, and then go through each pedal and loop combination and adjust them accordingly. Thanks Marty!!

Marty, thanks so much for teaching us these ideas on amplifier and pedal settings. It does get confusing on getting the different tones out of your amplifier and the pedals. But you explaining them really helps on how to get the sound you want.

Hi Marty, I’ve watched a few of your tutorials recently and they are all excellent. This has been the most helpful one yet and I can’t really explain how much I’ve struggled with this seemingly simply issue.
Due to illness, I’ve only recently picked up my guitar again after more than ten years and was starting to become very frustrated. I realised I wasn’t going to immediately return to the standard of playing I’d managed to get to previously and was prepared for that. Constant adjustment to every dial I had available for what seemed like most of my time I had available to play was truly beginning to take away the enjoyment though.
I had been forever unhappy with the sound and was getting lost trying to find what I wanted. So much so I began to blame my equipment and have purchased new only to find the same issues. One day I was finding a sound I was happy with. Moving into another room and getting so frustrated trying to recreate it, I removed any enjoyment I could have had using this simple, sensible and no nonsense approach.
Thank you so much for your help. This short piece of film has possibly saved me from giving up altogether.
    Cheers,
    Simon.

I learned through modding small tube amps; The Master Volume is the vol for the Power amp section The Gain knob is the signal strength into the preamp section. How hard you drive the preamp is where you get the distortion from.

LITTLE SOMETHING??? Man! I just realized that Volume and Gain is "like" additive synthesis with native compression (or not) and TONE is "like" subtractive LP CUT OR HP FILTER. Is the same concept, as a lover of guitars and synths it helped me A LOT to understand how to shape my sound and record better! Love it.

I got a hot ridden Fender Champion 600 5W, it has one volume knob. Pedals are required, can be overwhelming. Thanks for addressing the amp/pedal interaction so thoroughly. Someone else raised a question about the tone controls on the guitar, I’m interested in that also. Will check your other videos to see if you’ve discussed.

the EQ knobs are actually adjustments for filter cut off frequencies. If one considers this, the mid position makes little sense as "neutral" or "reference" or "standard" position, from which to start tweaking and experimenting. (as a minimum, one should know the values of such cut off frequencies) The max position (for all EQ knobs) instead should be such starting position, because when set to max, the filters will not filter! So one get the "pure" amp output.
The situation gets even more complicated when a pedal is involved, with its own tone knob (another filter, in series to those on the amps). Which explains why sometimes we turn the amp EQ knobs with no change in tone: this means the pedal cut off freq we have set with the tone knob actually envelops those we (try to) adjust on the amp.
To cut it short, the way I do it - but it's no rule - is: amp tone knobs: all to max. Pedal knob (or knobs) are used to get the desired tone. I haven't experimented the opposite (pedal tone to max, and amp knobs adjusted to get the desired tone).
I'd like to hear comments on the above. thanks
PS: with all respect for Marty - who knows infinitely more than me about music, guitars etc - I can't help noticing he sets the tone knobs to the mid - hoping to have a "neutral" or "reference" setting - and only plays with the gain/ drive/ volume. So in view of the above, this video is of little help in showing how to play with tone settings - which DO make a lot of difference!

Thx again for a great video, keep them coming! I would vote for more of these "explanation videos" in and around rock/blues tones. In depth explanation of the most used pedals and how to set them up together for the most versatile soundscapes?. This would help others not to have to buy a boundless of pedals to find their own "sounds", or at least give other guitarists hints about were or what to get of pedals to find whatever sounds they're heading for?. Must of the guitarist I know have lots of pedals they don't use anymore and it would be helpful if these purchases could be avoided, maybe to afford to buy another guitar! And there it is ; what types of guitars, amps, speakers, wires, strings, pic's and maybe what you can do yourself in case of changes to your gear?
Hope YOU find something out of this to apply in your (great) videos, IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL for many guitarists despite of what level of experience you may have to get this knowledge and understanding of how these things work together!.
Until next time, rock on one guitar at the time!.

Ha. Good video. Glad to know I’m not alone in simple settings. I’ll add that I use my volume on my guitar to get more growl whether running a clean boost or OD. Btw, I see you have a KoT. I’ve been using the KoT and OCD for several years now. One other thing I’ve learned to do is turn my gain up on my amp until there is a slight breakup. That’s my clean setting.
