Thank you for this walk down memory lane. I moved to Hillcrest in 1984. Coming from a small town in Midwest America, Hillcrest/San Diego was like a magical fantasy world. I had never seen so much happiness and freedom in people, as I did living in Hillcrest. I was a newly married teenager and working a couple jobs to keep myself busy. My husband was in the Navy and was gone a lot. I'd spend hours upon hours, driving around, getting to know my new surroundings and meeting new people. I have so much love for Hillcrest and I thank you Hillcrest for offering yourself to this young girl back in 1984. The people I met while living there, helped shape me into the person I am today. They're genuine concern for me is unlike anything I'd ever known before, or since. I saw my first gay couple, openly holding hands, give a smooch, and walk away toward Balboa Park. In Wide eyed wonder, my world and everything I'd known, began to evolve. I miss you Hillcrest, and I'll always have a very special place for you inside my heart. FYI, I lived at 3533 Sixth, Apt G, back there in the corner of our "L" shaped building. Our rent in 1984 for that one bedroom apt was $385/month. I couldn't begin to guess what that same apartment rents for today. Google Maps/Earth, show that my little apartment building (now called Balboa Flats) is still there, as well as the same buildings on either side. I'd love to take a trip and walk the streets of Hillcrest once again, feeling the spirits of those that have passed that were so filled with passion about their cause. I'm sure the feeling would be electrically calming :)
