Buddy Rich, at some juncture in the 1950s or 1960s, became very ill shortly before he was scheduled to perform several concerts in Australia. Rather than canceling those gigs, he asked his good friend, Louie (who Buddy secretly considered to be his equal), to sit in for him. Of course, Louie gladly did so-- *without fanfare*. It was a thrill to watch them once play side by side, trading licks, on the Tonight Show. 👍
Louie Bellson was an exceptional drummer. Many years ago (in the late 60's) I had the priviledge of meeting him. I couldn't believe how nice he was. He allowed me to sit behind his drums and play them. Just a wonderful, wonderful man.
I had the honor of meeting him and shaking his hand back in May of 1989 when he came to Tulsa. Super nice guy, and am AMAZING drummer! He still influences me today!

I went to see him when he came to N.Z.I don't remember what year but Louie was well into his 70s and his playing even then was mind blowing and he was an extraordinary humble human being.It really cut me up that so few came to his drum clinic..For me,it was such a privilege just to be there with him.

Saw him and Joe Morella having drinks at the Hyatt in Dearborn Mi late 80's when I was performing in the lounge.
