  • Here is a Winchester Model 42 made in 1948. This is the narrative I go through every day it goes to the trap range.
    No, it's not a rifle.
    Yes, it’s a Shotgun.
No, it isn't illegal to shoot trap with it.
    Yes, it's a Winchester.
    No, it isn't a Model 12.
Yes, it’s the one that’s only made in .410.
    No, really, it isn't a Model 12.
    Yes, it’s slam fire.
    No, I am certain, I promise, it isn't a Model 12 in .410.......they didn't make a Model 12 in four....huh?
    No, it’s not for sale.
If there ever was a "famous" design, this is it. People want to take pictures with this thing for crying out loud. Enjoy!

Very good review. I used to live near KCMO. I walked into Simmons, in Olathe KS and found ranks of model 42s that were being fitted with vented ribs. Amazing.

I worked in the gun shops for 6 years, starting in 1974. We were selling few if any Winchesters as a result of the post 1964 models.

An interesting gauge. I suppose a decent choice for small game hunting, and a challenge for clay sports. Low recoil, and certainly effective for defensive purposes at short ranges. In that regard, Mossberg marketed a short barreled pump 410 shotgun with a handgrip on the fore end that I believe was called the "Home Defender" or HS 410 - an interesting concept, but one that was unsuitable for any field or sporting use. The Win 42 is far preferable and presents a more versatile and aesthetic alternative.

    • @MilsurpGarage
      @MilsurpGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah....gotta remember that a .410 slug is a huge projectile certainly suitable for self defense.....or buckshot for that matter.

Wonderful video on the sweet Model 42, what a shotgun and one I hope someday soon to add to my small collection of Pre-64 Winchesters.
You may know that Ned Schwing penned a must have book “Winchester Model 42”, if not it would be your cornerstone book on the subject.
I hope to someday watch a video by you applying your BLO stock treatment on one of your Winchesters. Fingers crossed!!’

I remember back in the day, can’t remember exactly which rifle the video is on, I did do a bit for the explanation of how to rub the BLO in. Without its own dedicated video, it’s lost.

Yes more rare than the one you mentioned and no mention in the books you used for reference...I had it and eventually sold it to Bill Jaqua in Piqua Ohio...It was a grade 5 engraved color case hardened receiver 28" sheet choke with a milled rib and a receiver spoon...If you don't know what a milled rib is do some research...It has dovetail posts on the barrel and the actual rib slides on the posts and is pinned...The 88 milled rib guns were produced in the custom shop...They were the only ventilated ribbed 42s produced totally by Winchester...All other ventilated ribs were put on by Simmons...On those guns the proof is over the chamber under the rib...The milled rib guns the proof in over the chamber but left side of rib...Only other ribbed guns made at Winchester were the solid rib guns which are also very rare...I will not disclose what I sold that gun for $, but be assured it was way more than the $150 I paid for it from the hardware store next to the grain mill in Eaton Ohio...I had a collection of 30 plus 42s and I had pretty much every configuration that was available, so your great Winchester authors don't have the entire story and if Bill Jaqua were alive today he would verify this firearm as he paid dearly for it!...One of those 88 guns would be priceless today!...How about a grade 5 model 21 410...I had one...

The Winchester Model 21 was a conventional side by side shotgun, not a pump. Those Winchesters you showed are really good firearms from their finest days. Though a side by side pump shotgun would be an interesting thing indeed!
