Nice jump on the pre treatment of little critters before hand
Well..you nailed that right on the heads....getting the "jump start" before they invade and destroy. Thank you for watching and commenting. CK
Thank you so much for your trellis suggestion! I have been looking at A-Frames when something like this is really what I wanted 👊🏻🌻👊🏻
I LOVE when that happens! Glad to be a part of it. Thank you for taking the time to comment, too. If you haven't yet, please click on the like button (thumbs up) on the video, as that is a huge help to my channel. YAY!! CaliKim
I LOVE WATERMELON 🍉 THANKS FOR SHARING HOW GROW WATERMELON 🍉 #NOT A DAY WITHOUT JESUS 🙏
Watermelon is so gooood!!! CK
Just planted about 14 Sugar Baby and Black Diamond seeds about three days ago. Going to Lowe’s next to find a galvanized raised bed. (Arkansas summer!) 😅
Great idea!!!
Glad you think so! Thank you for watching! Where are you gardening from ? CK
Awesome video, thanks 🎉🎉🎉
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed and hope that you are a subscriber, such a nice comment! CaliKim
I love this idea! I've been trying to figure out what I want to grow in my "little shorty". Looks like sugar babies for the win! Thanks for this video 💚
I love cattle panel, but it has nearly doubled in price in 3 years. So glad you said the price range of ladder mesh, because now I might have to get creative with ladder mesh. Kim, I'll be very interested to see how you cradle the melons when they start to get heavy. Also, it's good to know that the soil to grow these melons in doesn't have to be very deep. Love the idea of growing plants in the middle that need some shade. I'm thinking herbs, or maybe even a squash plant. (If that's a bad idea, please say so). Your terrace walls still look beautiful, and I love that you've left some space open. So much life and color going on; thank you both for sharing it with us! 🐶🐾🤗 Hi Mac!
I was wondering if ladder mesh would be sturdy enough for sugar babies cucumbers, and other vining veggies
As a bricklayer, I was wondering the same. Might need a prop in the middle.
Thank you for sharing, great ideas
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching and following - CK
This is the first thing I am trying to grow. Thank you for all the information. I love the ladder mesh.
Glad it was helpful!
Just planted Bush Sugar Babies yesterday! 💜💜💜
Nice job, Joie!!! CK
Perfect timing. I just bought some sugar baby this week. Little Darlings not growing
Your nasturtiums are so big & beautiful!😮❤ I will give the trellis idea a try and plant some shade greens too.
Sounds fantastic! Go for it! and let me know when you start! Kim
Awesome thank you!!! Definitely going to be spraying the Neem oil!!
You are welcome! Good job out there, Destiny! CK
Great video! I planted (in cells) Sugar Babies that I bought in your Melon collection and they are doing great! Will be planting them Little Shorty that I also bought from you. Your videos and gardening instructions are so good!!! Thank you!
Thank you! We really try to make it pleasurable to watch, etc.! You are so welcome!
Thank you for this video! Just putting out my Sugar Babies and was wondering how to trellis them. This answered my questions.
Glad it was helpful, let me know if you make the trellis. It's so easy and inexpensive!
I’m so excited I came here looking for info on how to grow these & found you! I just ordered some 8 foot raised metal boxes & hoping my dog stays out of them! 😂 Thanks for the wonderful tips… ❤️🍉❤️
Oh Sandy this sounds like some hard, fun work with great rewards ahead!!! I am glad to hear that my videos are helping you!! YAY!!! Please keep me posted ok? Kim
That is soooo cool🍉🍉🍉😋😋😋
As these and your other plants grow I’d love to see pruning videos. Do I let all the flowers grow? Pull them off? I’m a super beginner!!
I love the idea of using a ladder mesh, doubled for strength. I may attach it to the wrought iron arch that I have over my raised bed. I didn’t know to spray Neem Oil in advance of problems but it won’t ship to my address. 😢
Hi Cathy - the ladder mesh is a winner, can't beat it for the price! NeemMax is a lifesaver for pest and disease control. The NeemMax concentrate is available for shipping to CA, (link in vid description) for some reason the power wand product is not. Thanks for watching!
Yes the price is great!! I checked on the link but the power wand is so useful. I may have to get it shipped to a friend’s house in NV. 😉😉
Any other suggestions to make an arched trellis without ladder mesh? My husband and I cannot find it anywhere where we live. Kind of crazy. We were so excited because we started a garden across from our house in a lot we purchased. Lowe's & Home Depot do not have it around here and your can order from Home Depot for delivery but it will be $79 just for that. The closest HD store that does have it is over an hour away. Thank you for any input.
I have another solution to use and I have done this 3 years now. Do you have any dome tents that have the the long skinn fiberglass rod in them that you aren't going to be camping in anymore ?
Doing this in my deck this year
NICE!!!!! I hope you found this inspiring!!! Thanks, Elizabeth for watching!
I'm growing sugar babies this year in my containers. I love most neem products. I'll check this one out this year. Zone 9b here time to get growing!
Sounds good! Glad to hear you are still growing!
Why in the world are y’all eating Neem oil plants?!!!
Divine timing 🙏🏼 I just planted these seeds yesterday for the very first time. I’m new to gardening 🥰. 🎉
Welcome, Wanda! how exciting!! Let me know! Kim
Just in time. I just looked at my grow tent and my sugar baby watermelon just sprouted. I tried before butfor some reason i was not successful. Hopefully this year it will work out. 🍉
Sounds exciting, Rocky! As usual, keep us all posted - Kim
Hey Cali Kim. Will you need to harness them? Thanks!
I have my sugar babies in a 1 gallon in order to create a large root ball but I plan on transplanting them into a raised bed pot if I can find one at a good price.
This is a very helpful video.
That is awesome! Great work!! Keep us posted, thanks for subscribing, I think you'll enjoy our channel - CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 you are also awesome!
I have a cattle panel trellis too...I think You Guys convinced me to grow Sugar Baby Watermelons out here in Hammond Louisiana. And Yes it is Hot!!!
I started sugar babies in the house about 6 weeks ago and getting ready to put them outside with canteloupe and some other watermelon varieties. My first time so crossing fingers.
How exciting!!!! Keep us all posted, Paula! Great job-
I planted mine a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully I get at least one.
I totally get it, Irene! Keep me posted!! Hope all is well - Kim
You have definitely motivated me to try this! 😃 thank you!
It makes sense to be proactive but one question I have as a newbie, is if the organic pesticide is going to kill the beneficial microorganisms in the soil and worm casting tea?
No, it kills the chewing and sucking on leaves. I suggest you spray in the morning/evening to protect the pollinators and don't spray the flowers directly. Thanks for commenting. CaliKim
Great info on watermelon! So happy you posted this today. I want watermelon but just dont have more room.
I never thought of using a spoon to get out my start!
Are you planting inground at all this year on your levels?
Glad it was helpful! As of right now, no. Not planning on it. Who knows...that could always change, right? You know us, gardeners!!! HA
I have only one raised bed and I have some peas climbing already so I don’t know how to get to it maybe cut down my peas. I love my lemon drop watermelon and would like your opinion about it. Thank you for your video ♥️😊👩🌾
You are welcome!! Thank. you for watching - do you mean when you say "I don't know how to get to it". Do you mean getting to the peas at the back of your raised bed? If that is what you mean, I would think a small collapsing ladder? Let me know, Emily ! Kim
Was waiting for this video i really love your video
Great to hear! Thank you - Keep me posted!
Mine sprouted in 3 days! I soaked them overnight, planted them in a large container pot, they sprouted so fast I couldn't believe it! They already have their first true leaves now. I did read that each vine will only produce about two watermelons. I'm wondering if you've grown them before, and find that to be true?
I remember years ago when u grew the Ali Baba watermelon! I never had much luck but a small sugar baby might be easier
Oh, yah, I remember that one, too! You should email pics of what you are growing right now! After all these years, would love to see a pic! Kim
Hi Kim. Do you still sell the big smart pots like this one in this video?
Hi MsLaydeP-Hi, yes I do. They are called Little Shorty and are 25% off right now - use the code MAY !! Happy Friday! Thank you! I’ll keep an eye out for your name! CaliKim
I’m starting these this yr. Zone 6a. Can you plant anything in the middle of that bed, or the growth will choke it out??😊
How much Vitality and fish fertilizer should we add to the watering can?
How do you keep the pests away?
Will Neem oil kill good bugs, too?
Anyone else’s Home Depot/Lowe’s not have ladder mesh?
Any other alternatives or places that do have it?
How are yours growing?
I don’t know if it’s the lack of fertilizer in the ground or all the cold cloudy🌥️days we’ve been getting but mine are taking forever to grow. I’ve got some Small Sugar pumpkins🎃 planted next to them which are having no problems and got big almost overnight when I added fertilizer to the patch.
Does that spray kill the good bugs?
Love your videos! Newbie question - if you have two watermelon plants growing in one cell. Do you transplant it as is and let two watermelon plants grow? Or are you supposed to only let one of the plants grow?
Hi Kara, good question. It's generally recommended to allow only one plant to grow in each location. Leaving two in can lead to overcrowding, competition for resources: sunlight, water, and nutrients. Generally what I do if there are 2 growing in one cell is let them grow, transplant into the garden and thin to the strongest seedling (trim the smaller one at the base) as they grow. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and commenting (subscribing?) ! CaliKim
Bummer.. Home Depot says the no longer carry the ladder mesh.. Cannot find any other local sources either. Love the idea. Thanks
Sorry to hear that - it must vary by location as our local Home Depot has it. I recommend searching homedepot.com to see if theres a location near you that has it. Keep us posted !
Love the idea of the ladder mesh but can't seem to find any available near me. Could it be called something else? This seems much easier to handle as opposed to cattle panels
Yes, you are correct. Not all stores carry it. If you look on up on the Home Depot website, ladder, mash mash Block. Try that!
My sugar baby watermelon plant doesn't seem like it's growing I gave them fetlizer last night and have been giving them lot's of water morning and night and it's 30 degrees outside today here in Hamilton Ontario and the stem is strong so will they grow?

Im growing country sweet water melons and rockmelons aswell i also grow kent pumpkins i will be growing sugar baby watermelons and the star and moon watermelon and golden skin watermelon and golden rockmelon also known as golden honeydew
Hi Aussie! Yumm, that sounds so good right now!!!! Please, keep us posted okay? If you are on the gram, would love to see a photo! @calikim29
Thank you for sharing!
What is the name of that trellis you used for sugar baby watermelons
Ladder Mesh trellis. Put two side by side and zip tie them! CK
This my second year for sugar babies. The only way I can the seeds to geminat is with wet paper towel in a plastic bag. When I plant seed directly in planting soil they never grow.
I bought the seeds from you unfortunately they did too well they all sprouted😂! I have 4 growing in a 4 inch container. That neem max does it work on already established plants and soil or is it best to use at planting?
How do you support the watermelons if they are hanging. Will the weight make them fall?
Hi Vivian, great question - they definitely need support! Lots of ideas here: bit.ly/CaliKimWatermelonTrellisPlaylist. Have fun!
I have noticed that when you plant starters that they sometimes have two babies, do you at some point cut the weaker plant away or do you leave them both? ❤ your videos.
Hi Shirley, I happen to be on when your comment came in! Great question. You have 3 choices:
Thinning: Thinning involves removing the weaker or less vigorous seedling, leaving behind the strongest one to grow.
Transplanting: If you prefer not to discard any seedlings, you can carefully separate them and transplant each one into its own container or garden spot.
Leaving Both: Keeping in mind that they will compete for space, nutrients, and sunlight, which can affect their growth and overall health. There are no guarantees on which one/both will survive.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Please subscribe if you have not already! CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 thank you. It literally is damned if you do and damned if you don’t. lol. I never know what to do. I hate to damage the roots when trying to separate. I sometimes just cut the weaker one off at the soil.
I get it and sure can be frustrating, can't it. Apply the above steps and keep a close on them and let's how it goes. It's frustrating if it dies, but don't beat youself on this! We'll get up and keep moving forward. CK we got you!
How to prune them?
I’d love to grow them, but I got some aggressive squirrels! I didn’t net them last year, so I’m trying again this year. Man…I have to net (I use tulle) which is fine, but they will get into everything
Yep, squirrels are relentless....the battle is real.
I'm loving these watermelon show... we're growing 6 this summer, and we're so excited
Ohhhhh! Sounds nice!! I love the 'pop' when they're cut open!! Keep me posted, okay?! Please!
@CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY its our first time finger crossed 😅
Is that trellis able to hold the weight of 4 sugar baby plants?
Yes. It did great! Thanks -
So should the neem spray be sprayed as soon as I plant? I’m planting a sugar baby watermelon plant from Home Depot? All of my fruits and veggies are plants.
Applying neem spray to your newly transplanted Sugar Baby watermelon plants can be a proactive measure to protect them from pests and diseases. It's generally a good idea to wait a few days after transplanting before applying neem oil. This allows the plants to settle into their new environment and reduces the risk of additional stress.
If you notice any pests or signs of disease during this period, you can apply neem oil sooner.
I hope this helps ! Please thumbs up the video and subscribe if you have not already (I can't always tell who has subscribed)!
Where are you and what are you growing? CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 I am in Dallas (Rowlett) Texas. I am growing cucumbers, roma tomatoes, jalapeños, and the sugar baby watermelon. I already have parsley and cilantro planted from last year. YAY!
My goodness, great work out there!! CK
How many fruits you allow to grow per plant?
However many it produces! Go with it!
Can you have watermelon plant in direct sunlight.? Cause I know some plant can't be in the sun all the time.
Yes you can, that's how it'll grow the best!
Is that bed 3x1x1?
No, it is 3' long, 18" deep, 1 foot wide and can hold 45 gallons of soil. CK
Hi great stuff love it except if it was organic you wouldn't be spraying chemicals on it just wanted to tell you this as I am more in line with using companion plants then chemicals myself
🎉

"Good luck in your work " Thank you, Maka!
Pinch off any suckers to keep aphid points down and let it keep only one fruit per plant for best results. Aphids can wipe out a vine in a day, I dont even bother with watermelon anymore its too bothersome for me.
Ugh, Aphids..... I get it!
That mesh wouldn’t be strong enough. My sugar babies got to the size of a basketball last season
I think I put too many in the raised bed 😢
May be overcrowding! Let's see how they do!
@@CaliKim29 as soon as I finished your video I went out and replanted the starters by the trellis! Had to use another raised bed and put some in bags but I feel so much better! Cali girl here too! Thanks for the info!
Fish fertilizer? but it's for fish, isn't it?
Nope ! Good for the garden! Kim
No, not sugar babies but the yellow flesh meat watermelon.
You eat plants treated with Neem oil? That’s literally insane
Kinda weird sounding isn't it? But yes, we do. 🤣. CK
