I was at Woodstock '69. Saturday, after being sick of being way the in back. Worked my way from the right fkank edge to the very front and said excuse me about 500 times, and just as I got situated Santana was intraduced. Diretcly in front of me was the player in the red shirt playing percussion. It was loud but very clear, and they played their asses off. It was so good the hair on the back of neck stood up. One of the besy days of my life!
I am only 21, however I would give everything in my bbank account to travel back in time to see Santana, my girl Janis, and my bois CCR. Every-time the camera shifts to an audience member at the festival, you can tell they are actively listening to the music and soaking up the vibes. I LOVE hippie women lol!
wavygr This American over 50 thinks Santana is the best musician ever to walk this Earth. He can play with anyone and fit right in... check out his performance with Faith Hill of all people. He didn't step on her once... just amazing!
@@OMGWUNSIU This other American over 50 loves Carlos... a friend in grade school brought Barboletta to school and that was it, I heard the music and I was hooked.
1 good thing LSD does for a performance, it brings all the bandmates onto the same level and mindset. Especially when the whole band drops at the same time, the bandmates move through the stages of the high together and on the same frequency, the band all peaks at the same time. No matter whats going on outside of the percormance happy, sad anger..its squashes all that and levels everybody out. You can imagine what this does for a performance.
Look at this man and what he added to this country. His blend of were he came from and were he arrived at, This is America, Immigrants are what America is, it is what makes us great, Love it or leave it, Steve, Little Rive CA
D Tom And illegals too are very welcome by your wage paying employers. It's like fucking a prostitute and then blaming it on her for being available to take your money. It is you paying the money. Make it a criminal offense to hire illegals and you wouldn't need any walls. But your economy would collapse......
Thanks Carlos - you definitely kicked off that festival into high gear. Please headline the 50th Woodstock reunion to complete the perfect circle of that cosmic trip we took off on with you. ♥️
In the summer of '69, in Central Park, (NYC), high on LSD (purple haze), just hanging around Bethesda fountain, and seeing everything around in shades of many colors, and all things changing into shapes I had not seen before.!. The experience brought on was fantastically weird and pleasant... But my most cherished memories were of smoking pot while listening to Santana in my apartment, and being with my beautiful Eileen.!.. Wow.!... Those were the days.!!
mrhyde2484 I think it sold a dream to latinos everywhere that it was ok to do drugs because at one point latinos or native never used chemicals to get high !
The Sound of San Francisco came to upstate New York and the rest is history.............!!! Santana showed the world another form of music.. Taking LSD only added to the performance..!! Thank you Carlos..!!
SANTANA, YOU know YOU are a great performer YOU play with so much PASSION. My question to YOU is ..... YOU are so CREATIVE and WHAT goes through your MIND when YOU pen down those great lyrics? YOUR CREATIVITY and the thought process that makes your music is amazing to me. I'd give anyt hingto have COFFEE with YOU.
Bill Graham was key, and Carlos to his credit has always acknowledged it. A lot of fans conveniently overlook that fact. I just watched the Woodstock movie again (PBS TV), and as far as the band’s performance of “Soul Sacrifice,” there’s no way to underestimate the playing of Michael Shrieve. Carlos was fantastic, but Shrieve held it all together and pushed everyone to their full potential. His solo qualifies as the most technically professional piece of playing in the whole damn festival. And I think he was 19 at the time.
Honestly, Santana Day should be a nationwide holliday, this guy's done so much to help the world, and as part of WoodStock, he's part of American history! He helped shape the people of his time, as well as the musicians around him. What more could we ask for?
I think only Carlos Santana could do so well under the circumstances - he is always In-Tune with his Spirit when he Plays - like No One else. In spite of just peaking on the "Acid", I'd say he did a Knock-Down-Drag-Out Superb Job of it - both In-Tune & In-Time. Way To Go Carlos ! Eternal Thanks.
By the way SANTANA, YOU speak well, you sound HUMBLE, HONEST and I like the way you carry your conversation on this TH-cam. I'm proud that you give so much of your time to us fans because your music gives many of us life ..... things happen and no one knows what the next will bring From my heart, THANK YOU for being and playing to my heart. Someday, I hope to meet you.
Senor Carlos Santana might be criticized for his actions of the past. What no other people have a past? It is what he is able to accomplish and has accomplished in this day and age that shows he has been able to articulate his words quite accurately now as far as I am concerned. It takes a musician to understand a musician. That would be me, but I LOVE CARLOS SANTANA. He has his causes that he gives back to the community in many areas of need. He remembers where he came from, yet he gives to others with a heart of love. He is now one of the most well-renowned accomplished musicians of his (this) time. Love the song "Smooth" that he does (the extended version of course!). Vaya con dios a las familia de Santana. InCristo, Renee :)
Santana and his dudes were high on LSD because they though they were going to play 12 hours later, as scheduled. Can you imagine the look on their faces, LSD or not, when they were told they were going on stage now! Good thing Santana's prayers were answered.
Carlos my brother I love you at the foot of the Cross and your music sends me to Heaven every time I see you live or listen to Moon Flower!!! In His Name!!!!! Jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carlos, you did just fine, despite the acid. You and the band's performance of "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock is one of the great live recordings of all time. The energy there is incredible. For you musicians- LSD is probably good for composing, but not for performing.
This is the song/video we should have sent on Mariner, or Voyager, or whatever space probe had that plaque on it showing where the spacecraft came from. How would the alien(s) who found it, and decoded it, react? Mind blowing on any planet!
Now I understand why he is so good to other musicians investing in them and helping out when the have hard times. What a guy. Hoping to see him at Bethel, the original woodstock location in August.
He is a Guitar God even playing an electric snake neck Gibson SG. That Soul Sacrifice is an amazing soundscape- Headphone it or plug the computer into the stereo- Unbelievable!!! There is an Unedited HD version uploaded from Woodstock 69 now!!!!
Bill graham loved carlos. I saw an interview with graham decades ago, he said "put a hundred guitarists in front of me and i'll pick out santana every time". I agree, santana has an unmistakable sound on guitar.
i love all the guitarists and drummers from woodstock any one who can be half baked and play infront of wat 500,000 people....i would shit my self these guys are the best i went to see santana about a year ago and it sparked my intrest in his genres.....RIP mitch michael jimi hendrix you will allways pwn!!
Carlos---man we all saw it when you came to our Experimental College at San Francisco State in '68 where you gave us all a fucking lesson in music.....i learned brother and so did you....for Bill it was a no-brainer---
o_O That's probably one of the most epic things you've ever said. ^_^ Congratulations. You are one of the proud few who appreciates music older than the past twenty years.
It's funny how people focus on the way he talks like fuck you guys that's not what matters i didnt even take notice to the slurs until I read the petty ass comments
Another great Mexican born musician at Woodstock was Aldolfo "Fito" de la Parra-the drummer for the blues/rock band Canned Heat. They played very well too.
In his book he says it was mescaline. Either way, it was given to him by Jerry Garcia and he took it because he thought they would be going on stage several hours later than they actually did. side note, I have taken both myself and understand that they are pretty similar in effect.
I saw Carlos in some Interview years ago on a TV Program saying he dropped "Mescaline" right before going on at Woodstock. I distinctly remember this because I loved the way he pronounced it.
I saw Santana in San Diego before Woodstock and before the release of the first album. It was an outdoor festival at San Diego State headlined by the Grateful Dead. They were billed and introduced as the Santana Blues Band. Needless to say they stole the show.
I saw this yesterday I was a apolled at what he said. Anyway thats what people did at Woodstock . The Drugs finally got to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin later in life. Both of the these people where great to follow in life and also left a mark on history as performers.
haha he said discomboobalated. what an awesome guy. i never would have pegged him as being so soft spoken. guess he just lets the guitar speak for him!
@methanandamide like u said "he was able to play despite the acid" Santana is a truely remarkable musician & hes my idol also...being on LSD had nothing to do with how he performed..i have never done LSD in my life & i dont need to in order to feel the music in a physical form, how you feel the music on depends on who you are as a person not what substance you let control you..its called a natural high & i can get it w/o any "help"..music is the most powerful drug u can ever have in ur system
When Carlos makes that face, you can tell something was going on. I can't believe he was able to keep it together. I do wonder if he had taken peyote. It would have changed history. Acid was so intense back then. I know I would not have made it thru. It is just how it was back then. If you needed drugs, it was there. If you needed food, it was there. If you needed to crash, it was there. Only thing not there was a view of the future. Broken down hippies. Sad story. Damn ,the drugs were good then
My bass man was telling me he did Acid a few times back in the day, he said the effects of it are permanent, if it made you better, you stay better, if it made you worse, you stay worse. Don't know..
I was at Woodstock '69. Saturday, after being sick of being way the in back. innocuous 😂😂😂😂😂
Santana knocked me out at Woodstock. It was definitely one of the highpoints of the three days of music. The percussion section was just so awesome.
Bob Harris I hope you enjoyed your time there, you are lucky to have been
There has never been anything like it since
YOU WERE THERE? WOW, that's so awesome :), Sandy (Dan Lee's wife)

like he physically assaulted you? damn, sick
Santana was the highlight of Woodstock. Absolutely electrifying.
1 good thing LSD does for a performance, it brings all the bandmates onto the same level and mindset. Or it could go the other way and someone or everyone freaks out and has a bad trip. Can be a gamble as well.
Such a dope concept to think about
100% agreed

For me, Bill Graham was the architect of Psychedelic, and late 60's band. we all owe him and his crew a lot... fucking a lot.
