  • How do you prepare for the CASPer test?
In this video, Dr. Rajani Katta, author of the MMI book and The Medical School Interview book, reviews 10 tips and strategies to help you prepare for the CASPer exam.
Although you may hear that you cannot study for the CASPer test, I strongly believe that strategic preparation can improve your performance. A common question we hear is "How do I improve my performance on the CASPer test?" These strategies can help you improve your typed responses to the CASPer exam, and overall these strategies fall into two main categories: strategies that help you think about potential approaches to questions and strategies that help you get it all down on the screen. The first strategy I recommend is the use of frameworks to help you organize your thoughts. I also recommend the note and scan technique, the creation of a story bank, and learning basic medical ethics. It’s also important to use words that convey empathy and respect, to practice using time-bound scenarios, to let go of perfectionism, and automate your writing. In February 2022 the makers of the CASPer also introduced the use of video responses. This means that students will have to focus on their verbal communication and nonverbal communication, and will have to pay attention to "the virtual self."

Thank you! This helps narrow down the options for how to respond. Though, one of the practice questions boiled was “you are stranded on an island with four other survivors. How do you survive? How do you stay hopeful? Your shelter is destroyed by the high winds. What should you do?” It was very odd.

Thank you for this video! How many words per minute should we strive for?

Great question, don’t really have guidelines on words per minute, it’s more about organizing your thoughts and getting them down efficiently. But the faster typist definitely have an advantage.

What do you think of writing the test prep questions in a bit of a longer time-period at first and then slowly shortening the time period as you go?

That’s definitely a great strategy for practicing, since one of the hardest things about the CASPer is definitely finishing in such a short time.

You have 1 minute for each video response response question
