Today me and mum head back down to the breach of the Bridgewater canal! To see if anything is going on today. When we get to the cofferdams through they were, leaking heavily. But how full is the canal on the Manchester side now? Dad also prepares the boat for the start of blacking tomorrow.

such a big job to properly clean the hull but will be a job well done. Olive will be beautiful.
@nancyspringston8547 Thanks Nancy. She is starting to look lovely
I just love your authenticity.
There is simply nothing artificial or any acting for the camera.
You are who you are, and I'm sure that's why your subscribers like and admire you all so much.
Thanks janet that's a lovely comment
3:00 From a certain perspective, it's actually very lucky that you guys particularly happened to be the ones to get stuck there. You brought the equipment, skills, and existing network to produce really high quality first person coverage of this whole story. If you hadn't been among the unlucky ones who got stuck, I don't think we would have gotten this kind of coverage. You've brought so much more exposure to the story and the state of the canal system in general, and you've probably increased the chances of the canal being rebuilt.
We were thinking that and I think Josh helped by filming the breach that's why we got off within a month but bridgewater canal company done everything the can for us
Josh. Dad is like me and finds it hard to ask for help. He's prepared the hull well. I know when asked you help out. You do many other things around the boat, as does your mum. Don't let a few in the 1000's that comment change how you and the family interact with each other. I am confident that you reach 100k and achieve your goals. Stay strong and focussed. All love to you, mum and dad. Diane, as you read and respond, please let Andy know I admire him. I have worked away and then had to come home on weekends and do work around the house. Akways something to do. ❤❤❤
And in addition we realise that Josh is there with you on the weeks that Andy is away which would be invaluable.
On a boat my darling there is always something to do but we did live in a cottage that was built in 1620 and always needed things to do😊
@AmazingJane137 Josh is a fantastic help being here when Andy isn't. If I was on my own when the breach occurred I don't know if I would have thought to push Olive away from the wall to stop her from tilting
Not only is your flying amazing but your choice of music is brilliant. Keep them coming . Many thanks.
Your dads a good man doing all that work on the boat
I know Teresa. He is a very hard worker 😊
It’s a labour of love and hats off to your dad for his work on Olive, thanks for uploading Josh ❤
He loves doing the work himself😊
great job from Andy
such a grafter
He certainly is. He loves making olive look beautiful again😊
Top job Dad..
Thanks Gary
Well done Josh, thank you for the update, boat coming on nicely now 😁
HI josh yet another great video and drone footage of the breach and surrounding areas, I see your dad is working like a trooper getting the loose blacking and rust removed ready for pitting to be fixed and a repaint, and the cats are on security duty, And your mum doing the shopping what a TEAM, I do hope the weather holds out tomorrow for you all stay safe and warm.
Let's hope the rain keeps off. Fingers crossed 😊
So fab to see Olive coming along with her service, Andy is full on & expert at it isn't he! Every update is enjoyable, you are just a really down to earth family, so enjoyable to watch. So funny when the cat spat at Roger thru the window! Guarding the territory! Thanks for another fab video Josh and for reading the comments Diane x
That's a lovely comment thank you😊
Thanks for the latest update. Well done to Andy for working so hard getting the boat ready for blacking.
He is doing an amazing job
Thanks again Josh for the aerial coverage
You have done a super job Andy you are indeed a bloody hard worker
He is a very hard worker 😊
It looks as if that flooded field next to the river could easily be drained off into the river if someone dug a drainage channel out from the flooded part leading down into the river. Thanks for your upload, I always look forward to your latest news now!
Then watch the environment agency jump up and down throwing fines around all over the place; meanwhile water companies and such, somehow get away wantonly dumping sewage and dodgy stuff into rivers, due to 'lack of investment', aka 'far too busy paying out dividends'.
@@Tekwyzard Then the environment agency should consider fines for the canal breach, it was caused by lack of proper maintenance and look what it's done to the land. But I'm not knowledgeable about the rules.
@@claireseyeviewonredbubble I know, but I'd bet they won't. They'd go after the 'little guy' trying to drain their field though ...
I was thinking the same, but noticed that it looks like the river bank has collapsed in one of the more recent drone shots. Maybe they don't want to risk machinery near the river banks to cut a drainage ditch
They'll need to install a culvert first before attempting to build anything like new banks on that ground. That water will be destablizing the ground under the canal right-of-way too much to build on. I imagine that's the plan, and they won't invest anything anything else until they're ready to do it.
Although the alternative (more expensive) is to bring in fill and raise the flooded ground so it properly drains to the creek. It's entirely possible (as Josh has mentioned) that the old culvert collapsing cause this breach in the first place. It would be ideal to not need to have a culvert at all there.
Great work doing the video Josh 🙂
I'm so glad he is wearing a mask what a relief 😊
Health and safety and all that .Glad to make people happy
I hope Dad has enjoyed doing that, I am sure he found it satisfying. It looks an excellent job and a lot safer than using a needle gun! Another good video thanks Josh.
Andy is in his element when he does these kind of jobs. We all can't wait to see Olive looking good😊
Thank you for all you do. Much appreciate the update. The work on Olive is awesome. All the very best
Thanks moira
Looking forward to seeing the boat when it's painted,. And with the rest of the work now nearly done. Then it's back to the adventure on the canals
Can't wait to get back cruising eamon😊
Hi, Josh, Diane and Andy, well done Andy, you certainly works very hard on your days off too, looking forward to seeing progress on Olive tomorrow, hope you have good weather. x
Thanks Chris. Andy loves doing the work on Olive
Great video buddy! Glad to see you and your mum got out for a update and at least one of your bikes has been fixed Buddy so you can get out. Keep up the good work 🤙🏽👏🏽
Thanks dave😊
Your Dad has done a great job on the boat 🚢 it's looking good. It's shame josh that your Soapy Water didn't get for grease off.but we Live and learn.have a good week.😊
That's very true Chris. It a bit of trial and error with these kinds of things.
@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat yes I can Imagine it is .🤗
Well done Andy, that looked hard work, but you’ve done a thorough job and Olive is ready for welding, new anodes fitted & blacking to be started tomorrow because of that 🤙. I’ve got my fingers 🤞crossed that any rain is short lived tomorrow.
Lovely filming as usual Josh too 😊🤙.
Update video tonight Sue
Hi guys, I missed your live yesterday because I was on a family day out. Will watch it after this video, hope you're all well, Glad to see your Dad with a mask 👍. I hope all goes well with the blacking tomorrow . Thanks Josh , Diane & Andy
Finger's crossed it stays dry Barbara
Ah! Josh it was really nice to see you throw in a hand on the boat to help out pops trust me when I tell you coming from a father its a great experience when working side by side with your son and also I have in turn learned many things while helping my pops good on you boy!! Cheers! 😁
Thanks Chris 😊
Great video..looking forward to Olive back in the water. Take care😊
We are too and I can't wait to cruise Olive again with her new propellor and tiller shaft. She will be like a different boat.
Keep the narrow boat blacking going, love to see how you fill the pitting, thanks for the new update on the breach
There were people ignoring the fences when we were there on Saturday. Great job Andy.
Most people are just ignoring the fencing
Shame you're out of the water. Looks like a perfect day for a cruise!
I know it would be a lovely day for a cruise
Great drone footage and editing, of a day where weekend 4 off and siphoning towards full on the other side to your breach day mooring means the blacking in dry dock was the Dad skill operation make the second half edit out of.
It's pretty clear from the view from your drone, that the leak in the cofferdam isn't too serious. It must be quite weird looking back at what happened, now. And it was such a random thing to have become caught up in the drama of it. But it was a fairly unique experience and brought a lot of camaraderie in all of your troubles. Your dad's been working like a Trojan, and glad to see him with his mask on. That's much safer. All set now for the blacking!
All about health and safety to keep everyone happy. He has a mask on and glasses
Can't understand why you would have upset the workers Josh. You've certainly done a great service for the boaters that's for sure. It will be great to see Olive blacked and very much look forward to Will arriving.
Some people hate the fact that you are allowed to film anyone in public and put it online. If you don't want to be recognised wear a burka, simple as.
Will is a great guy and we all can't wait to see him again😊
Thankyou for all you do and are doing , take care
Thanks 😊
Instead of washing-up liquid, what they should have recommended is "sugar soap" which would have cut through the debris & greasy residue left from sanding off the blacking, too late now though, but you might wish to remember for the next time. Well done to your Dad for stripping the old blacking off properly, a lot of lazy people think it can just be pressure washed and it's good to go. You just seen for yourself, after your Dad has used a rotary wire wheel brush, then you went round it with a brush and soapy water, what remains, your boat is being prepared the proper way and your blacking will be much more effective after it.
We do like to do things properly when it comes to looking after Olive. She is our home.😊
Love a timelapse
Hi guys i have tried to get this over to people because i have been in the building trade for 50 years. But when you have cleaned down put 2 coats of shellac knotting prior to blacking its so cheap but water inside or outside will not penetrate it and its cheap! Bitumen is just a by product of coal but when it deteriorates your hull will still be protected. Simple but these companys dont tell you this cos its business for them and you come back every 4 years????
We have used bitumen the last 2 times and in 4 years this is the third time of blacking but decided to do 2 pack epoxy this time then we won't need to take Olive out for 4 years
Great work Josh from you all take care see you tomorrow
Great job ..josh and family all looks good
Probably find the water in the canal is seeping through the silt base and going under the coffer dams. As it wasnt dredged before they were put in so the silt between the dam base and the canal clay base is porous.
That is probably what is happening 😊
I guess when Peel start to work on repairing the breech, and you’re away to the south following the saga will be tricky- I’m sure your drone will give us great updates. Those plans and maps look like there’s a great season coming up!
We are hoping peel will inform us when they start the work on the breach and Josh can come and film it
Well done Josh, the boat is looking ready nearly there. I follow Will so I am looking forward to seeing him tomorrow ( my time).
Olive is looking amazing now. Update vlog tonight
Wish I was there to help yer dad i enjoy stuff like that
Andy doesn't want the help but we think Roger might help tomorrow
I love the music you use!
Felt so sorry for your mom yesterday fielding all those comments, she must have been exhausted!
I do try and answer all the comments Valerie but it is harder when we are live and I do apologise if I skip past people 😊
Hi Josh and Diane 😊
Hi there😊
lots of respect for Dad only one grafting
That's his choice. Josh offered to grind the rest of Olive and he said no
Josh is making videos and Mum is keeping the supplies coming in 😂
Our Snow Drops are up here in Virginia USA too!
Crocuses are out too😊
Hi Josh, great video
Your dad needs to wet flannel his face before he gets into bed tonight , bless him. Lovely to see Olive having some TLC before her next journey, love to your mum ❤️
Hi mandy thanks for watching. 😊
Naughty people going through the fence down to the breech. Lock them in 🤣
Interesting watching the upkeep of Olive.
Soon be back in the water. 😄
Olive is coming on well😊
Still love that music 👍🏻
Greetings from Canada and thanks for sharing all the updates on the breach Josh. Very interesting watching how everything unfolds.
I have two questions.
1. What do you use for your video editing?
2. Where do you get your music selections?
Thanks
Editing is Sony Vegas and music is from TH-cam audio
Love how informative your videos are. What are the anodes for?
Sacrificial corrosion. If you connect a more reactive metal to a less reactive metal, the more reactive one corrodes instead of the less reactive one. So you attach anodes made of metal that is more reactive than the hull0 and you just replace them when they corrode away.
Ahhh ok, that makes so much sense! Thank you for the reply 😊
To protect the hull and see the comment above
Yeah, I did. It makes sense. Thank you for replying 💙
Your dad will be plagued by those pieces of wire that fly off the wire wheel, they get in your clothes and then your washing, months later they randomly start stabbing you, like what happened to me in Asda, I was walking around getting stabbed in my butt cheek by a piece, had to go to the toilet to find the bugger, my missus was crying with laughter 😂😂😂
Those Rock Shox rear shocks start at around $400 Canadian so probably a couple hundred British Pounds and go up from there depending on the model. I just ended replacing the seals in mine after I damaged it with an air compressor. They sell full service kits for well under $100
They need to sort that dam.. just imagine if it failed...😮
Josh out there poking holes in the barrier for content! ( Before you crucify me, I'm joking as the Taylors are way too wholesome to fall into that ' influencer ' catogary 😂) I would personally travel to poke holes myself to watch more content from this salt of the earth family ❤!
I think the fence at the breach serves another purpose; it looks like its defining the farm property lines so any repair will not encroach on the farm.
I use rust converter on my waterline before blacking. The bitumen stays on a lot longer
Ey up me ducks.
It's getting there now guys. Hope it stays dry for your blacking as there's nowt worse than being out in the rain whilst working.
Ay a good'un 🙂👍
They done well today paul and it didn't rain until the afternoon
I'm just glad you was in the wrong place at the right time or I wouldn't of found you
It's worked out well for Josh having so many more subscribers. He deserves it after 4 years of hardwork😊
@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat %100 agree Diane
G'day,
Great stuff !
Did they put a glob of Axle-Grease in the Cup-Bearing under the Rudder-Pintle ; that might both make the Tiller easier to move while the fittings are new, and reduce the wear-rate - at least until the Water-flow can dig the Grease out of the slight Clearance-fit...?
Have a good one...
Stay safe.
;-p
Ciao !
They did😊
There's a reason why everyone uses a pressure washer to remove old blacking.
They did pressure wash Olive but it wasn't the high pressure one as its broken
Why don't you black the baseplate? I get that friction from cruising might remove the rust like you said but it's still losing metal to oxidation. Or does the baseplate not rush for some other reason?
Because Olive is cruising all the time you don't need to paint underneath and it would be all scrapped off anyway. It's different if you stay in one place. Also as you can there isn't room for even me to get under her let alone Andy or Josh
The inner cofferdam on the Taylor side is doing all the work. The outer was always pretty useless. The sooner the better the earth dam is installed, before the next storm certainly arrives. Get Olive done and get out of The Bridgwater, pronto.
Get slime innertubes. I use them on my gravel bike. over 2 years no puncture. going along Macc canal & Middlewood way.
Had slime innertubes but still got punctures
and only used 2 wire brushes he did well. i use those in my job they work well but do tend to fir out wire bullets into your legs good work
The wire brushes Andy used were quite expensive
@@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat i hate to tell you this but im a metal fabricator and use them a lot and i dont pay much for them about £4 each
@xtr1092 we done up only a 42ft and went through bloody loads of them and took back right down to the metal all the blacking above the waterline and down underneath base plate sand blasting sorted the pitting treated the metal and 2 pack epoxy I mean hats off to Andy he works and is trying to get it done before he goes back to work, 3 years in and out the water so needs to be done right no cutting corners
@ also a tip for next time get an air powered needle gun it works faster and lasts longer
I imagine that fence will delineate the farmer's field but my guess is it is for animals. Gives him the option of using that land for animals. Not much good for stopping humans who want to ignore it. I see you had some good weather today. It was truly glorious driving across Mallorca this morning, after a horrible few days.
Love majorca. We have been there and are going to menorca this year
In the US if someone went past the fences and got hurt -- they'd sue whoever put up the fence for not doing a better job!
Have you heard anything about the review into the continuous cruiser license that the crt is doing looks like life on the canals is going to possibly get more expensive
The licence is going up every year for 5 years😊
Back in the day was a busy route probably be already repaired or even prevented , lot of heritage sure must be gov grants for repairs
Interesting. Is anything done to maintain the underneath of the long boat?
It's a narrowboat and you don't need to do the underneath as we move all the time and it would be scrapped off. Also I Don think Andy would fit under there lol 😂
Thanks Josh, in your view could you explain what you think will happen to the farmland, it appears to be covered with sand at present, the breach has so many repercussions. Just a thought on my part. Regards to all. Andrew.
The farmer will probably remove it when he can and hopefully be able to put animals in the field again😊
Andy could pass for Ronnie Barker with those safety glasses on 🤣.
😂😂😂
Been loving your updates over the past five weeks. Really liked seeing your cats How are they liking being up on stocks? Does the underside of the boat not need to be cleaned and painted as well?
Underneath Olive doesn't need to be painted as we move all the time and it would just be scrapped off. It's no different for the cats to be on stocks as they aren't going out at the moment
Do they offer a media blast option rather than wire brush option ?
Love your drone music Josh, so uplifting - what is it?
Found on TH-cam audio
Gg says woof to the kitties
Meow meow back to GG
Odds are now one in thirty and improving.
Thanks for the update. Give the cats a cuddle from me please ❤
Will do ❤
Just being funny here. So if Mom is Mum. Is Dad Dum? No he's not. I see he is wearing ear protection. Well done!🤠
😂😂
They’ve replaced the fence as it’s the land owner’s property boundary. That got damaged due to the breach. So they have had to fix it as it’s the land owners property.
Are you doing the base plate?
You're out of there anyway 😊😊
How do you get the paint on the bottom of your boat where it rests on the cradle?
Hi Geoff. You don't need to black the bottom of Olive as it will be just scrapped off when cruising. We cruise all the time so it might be different if you stay in one place
@@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboatWOW! That’s something else I’ve learned from your channel. I knew that almost all the canal system was silted up but never realised that boats of your size & weight were dragging along the bottom so much.
Thanks for your answer. 👍
What are the anodes for? Havei spelt that correctly. The things your mum fetched that were cheaper than last time. I have notice some around the boat all looking slightly different to each other.
Sacrificial, they rot instead of the steel hull. They can be easily replaced when used up.
@adventtrooper thankyou, so the ones around the boat are all at different stages of that. Makes sense.
Hi ,, Just wondering how do you get underneath of the Barge to paint it, do they move the trolley things to allow you access,, As I say just curios not knowing anything about boats.
Because we move all the time it wouldn't be worth it as it would be all scrapped off. Also Andy or Josh couldn't fit under there😊
Maybe grease that tiller rod a little?
The welders greased it when they done the work
@@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat that's good, its cool to see all the hard work
Wow , olive looks a big lady out of the water , that's going to take some painting , your arms will be aching when you've finished it , did it come with that name ? Or did you name it that ? .
She is 70 feet long but seems to look longer out of the water. And she was always called Olive. She was an ex black prince hire boat and they are all ladies name.
Can you explain what your dad is doing and why? Getting ready for blacking. But what is that? Maybe you said at some point and I missed it. TIA
He's removing the old blacking.
Narrowboats are made from mild steel which is reactive so would rust to dust in water if you don't protect it. Blacking is that protective waterproof layer. There are two common options: a bitumen (the same substance is used to make asphalt) paint, cheaper and easier to DIY but it wears off and deteriorates quite quickly so has to be reapplied every 2-3 years, and 2-pack epoxy which is more expensive and harder to DIY but it offers better protection and can last up to 10 years with maybe one touch-up.
Thanks for explaining @@YaaLFH
*Lad, if that bike is a no-name brand. That the shocks won't hold air, nothing to do. BIke shop might be able to try new o-rings. Other than that. Proper name brand with Fox suspension of quality or other, is used about 500-1000. Could find a deal. Hire one for a day. You'll see the difference. Marketplace. Ask your friend about it.
Pretty sure it is a Gaint, not exactly a no name brand
@@UNCLETOEKNEE We have two Giant Trance models. Full suspension. They shouldn't leak at all. That's top shelf bits. Go find a competent bike shoppe for an eval.
Josh, what is the blacking? Is it anti-fouling paint, coal tear epoxy, or something else?
2 pack epoxy
How old is the narrow boat hull ?
What type of anodes do you use?
Olive was built in 2008 and the anodes are magnesium 😊
Josh, what did I miss? What did you do on the contractors?
It's a long story
Surely Peel are failing in their responsibilities stopping people going towards the breach by leaving the fencing just loose for people to move out of the way, they only need a couple of clamps on each of the fencing panels to lock them together.
Peel have there so easy to remove they can't be there 24/7 even crt do when there working on there canal but doesn't work god I've seen looks shut for a repair and people break into it you can only do what they can
This fence doesn't seemed to be stopping anyone. They just pull it out and go through. It's so irresponsible
It's good that you are now wearing a mask but please make sure it fits your nose
The metal strip on the mask needs to be pushed down tight against your nose so no air can get through
If the mask isn't a good fit you will still be breathing in dusty air
Please look after yourself
Thanks Peter but everything Andy pulled the mask over his nose his glasses steamed up and he couldn't see anything and he needs his glasses to see what he is doing😊
I've had trouble with masks steaming up my glasses as well
The metal strip on the mask needs to be pushed down tight around the nose for a really good seal
By bending that metal to the shape of the nose it should stop the glasses steaming up
I hope this helps
Bloody hell a lot of wielding to be done 😢
Do you mean welding. We have 4 anodes to put on Olive
Yes mate , no use doing half a job 👍
I don't know how your applying the 2 pack paint but if your spraying it wear a proper mask, ive painted lorry/trailer chassis with red oxide and silver paint 30 years ago without a mask, not full time just ocasionaly and not suffered any health issues, but in the early years of 2 pack paint spraying i know of a couple of local paint sprayers who have died a few years later from not wearing a spray mask, theres some nasty stuff in 2 pack paint,.
They are not spraying it on. It's being rollered on
the more the banks dry out wont that make it worse
