I love watching these types of builds. One day …
If I have “great” ideas, I’ll put them in my build. Since I’m not building your trailer, I’ll enjoy watching you build and seen your great ideas.
Since there are many “great” ideas that call for “use this” (not laying around), “use that” (not laying around). Budget builds are great when you use free things laying around, instead of BUYING EXPENSIVE, NEW THINGS, WHICH MAKES IT NOT BUDGET. Especially for those of not made of money.
Some of us are good at sourcing free things like full thread rods, small sections of angle iron, etc. Lots of construction going on around me; stuff they don’t have to pay to throw a way, they let me haul a way for free (I always ask and clarify). These videos justify my collection and give me a great next project.

Man, the idea of a roof top tent on a custom built trailer is nothing short of genius! Now if only I could convince the wife!!

Gotta admit, I’m impressed by youtubers that care about sound! Loved to hear the sound of the machine shots getting turned down to not be annoying and to go well with the music. Subscribed!

I like the 2 crescent wrench metal brake. Plasma cut all but the last inch on each end, make bend, stich weld back. So simple why didn't I think of that. Cool build

Southco compression latches are great for clamping down on seals. Plus you can get everything keyed the same.

You really need a laser or plasma table! It would take away from some of the plain persons fab lessons but it could help your time a lot! Love the content man, thank you!

Yes! Tough wieght. So many people underestimate. Had truck trailer Bobcat/tractor rigs that varied widely on tongue weight. Some needed massive amounts to be stable others a couple hundred pounds was adequate. Just dependent on your trailer and rig. Rule of thumb too much is better than not enough!

I have an idea! I've been seeing alternator setups for hot rods that mount on the rear axle.. what about doing something like that? Might not be amazing going slow offroad but on the highway it might work out pretty sweet.

    • @11green11

I just suggested powering it with a motor and adding an esc for available on demand power/traction but my first thought was the generator idea 😯 an alterator would be much lighter and cost effective 😎😎👍

Another way of doing a seal for a door is to use a small piece of channel for the doorway mating surface, a rubber seal in the bottom of the channel, and then an edge surface that mates to the center of the channel. Done right with proper dogging latches around it (like with a Navy ship's watertight doors), it can be pretty waterproof even with light weight materials like you are using...

  • @Crewsy

Front door with a storage bin in front of it should make for an interesting solution to allow the door and hopefully the spare tire to open.

Nice job Nate! If you need some quick anti-crush sleeves for the bushings, you can get a 3' section of 3/4 x .065 seamless tubing at Ace hardware or Mclendons for a few bucks! A 5/8 bolt fits perfectly!
Looking forward to the rest of the build!

Trailer coming together great. Watch out for those sharp door corners when the door is raised ~ perfect height for bumping your head into. As you're also a plumber, maybe some pipe insulation for the edges/coeners whenever the door is open! Great project.

    • @Crewsy
      @Crewsy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

He isn’t leaving the door to open that much. He said he wants it opening more and will make the adjustments to the strut mount locations off camera.
At that height it is definitely going to ruin a weekend. 🤕

Tire mounted on the front in my experience causes rocks to bounce off and smash your window.
Hopefully not too negative Nate. Just constructive. Cheers from Australia

Not sure if you were going to do a drawer system inside for storage, but I always thought that in place of big heavy duty, and EXPENSIVE drawer slides, using a “utility sled” or “hunting sled” as the drawer would be a more cost friendly alternative. And they could rest on your tongue when slid out. Just an idea.

Btw I just wanted to say that your channel inspired me to learn how to weld, I ended up getting a AC/DC tig welder last year and I've made rock sliders, custom brackets for various parts, built myself a lightweight aluminium drawer system in the back for overlanding.
So thanks for the great content and the inspiration

If you extend the upper shock mounts away from the hatch, when it is closed the upper mounting points should be behind the lower mounting points. This will put back pressure on the door, keeping it closed better and not putting so much stress directly on the hinges. This also results in the hatch opening higher. I don't remember which TH-cam car show was doing that, but I remember that was how they adjusted the balance.

A bit of a suggestion. Your door seal would have been more bomb-proof if you'd extended the flange of the door skin over the front interface. You'd have a Z shaped seal interface instead of an L shape.
Nice inspiration for me going forwards though. Have fun on your next wheeling trip.
