    What would have made the car sequence MUCH better is if you could figure out a way to have the GoPro POV be fixed to the axis of the gyro to demonstrate 'fixed in space' even when cornering (like when you have the GoPro on a shovel handle POV). Nice casting/machine work.

    In my college machine shop course almost 45 years ago, I built a gyroscope that was even bigger and nicer than yours. But the gimbal lock problem was evident. Not just because you lose one axis when it coincides with another, but because the tiny misalignment of the coincident axes would exert a torque on the rotor. So I built my own design with an extra ring and with the axes 80 degrees apart instead of 90. In principle, it is possible to bring the gyroscope through any angular path without locking up any pairs of axes. In practice, it didn't work so well - probably because it's not possible to make an 80-degree angle with the precision of an indexed 90-degree angle.

    thats torque for you. torque is the cross product of force and distance vectors which means that it is 90 degrees offset from both vectors.

    I've beena fan of gyroscopes since Eric Laithwaite's demonstration in the Royal Society Christmas lectures several decades ago.
    Just a questoin. Has anyone tried gimbal angles at anything other than 90 degrees? You would probably need an angle of 67.5 degrees and 4 gimbals. Would that avoid gimbal lock?

    How do you compensate for the speed changing on the gyro for navigation? I assume you gotta put a motor on it but then, doesnt that create a counter force?

    Say the axis of your spinning wheel is pointing along the axis of a spacecraft and the spacecraft rolls. How does it detect the roll? Are there speed sensors on the spinner?

    Hi David, excellent "homemade" gyroscope.
    Just out of curiosity: what kind of bearings did you use in the gimbal and gyro flywheel? Brass bushes (self aligning), ball bearings, or perhaps even ceramic (ball) bearings?
    Have you tried lubing the bearings a little bit? It might dampen the vibrations a bit, resulting in longer bearing life, and a longer spin of the gyro.
    Also, why isn't the fly wheel made as heavy as possible? It would make the gyro spin longer, or isn't that necessary?
    Would a heavier fly wheel help with the inertial guidance and detecting earths rotation?
    Please don't take this as any kind of criticism, I'm just a mechanic who's fascinated by gyroscopes and gyro compasses.

      The bearings are straight forward ‘economy’ ball bearing. I did try more expensive versions, but to be honest they didn’t make any difference.
      I did find that the bearings needed oil as without it they didn’t last long at all (maybe just a few runs). I think the vibration comes from the fact that the fly wheel isn’t perfectly balanced (which makes a big difference at high RPM). There is also some slop in the various screw threads that form the gimbals, and that doesn’t help.
      With regards to the weight, the gyroscope effect has more to do with angular momentum than absolute mass. Or in other words, adding mass to the outside of the wheel has a bigger effect than mass at the centre. i.e. more brass at the middle wouldn’t bring much , but more brass at the edges would make a big difference - but of course then it wouldn’t fit in the frame.
      To detect the earth’s rotation it would just need to spin for longer, but that would probably mean making it continually powered (either electrically or pneumatically) which is an entirely new complication!

      And you're right, better bearings are only helpful when all the bearing fitting clearances, the alignment of the axles and the balancing of the flywheel is perfect.
      As I haven't got acces to a lathe or a milling machine any more, I was considering buying a second hand attitude indicator or a gyro compass to do some experiments, but they are rather expensive.
      Oh well, I already have too many hobbies and too little time as it is :-)
      Luckely there are youtubers like you we can watch and learn from.

      That's a very low starting price. But as its electric driven (electronics isn't my strong suit) and the seller doesn't seem to ship to belgium, I think I'll pass.

    Why orientation of rotation axis is changing when gyroscope is in the car (1:30 ) but is stable when is moved holded in hands (2:00 - 2:20) ?

      The gyroscope stays the same with reference to the rest of the universe in both shots. Don’t forget the camera is also moving with the cars reference frame.

      Sort of hard to explain without proper demonstration but think of it as this. When 2 of the gimbal rings align, you are essentially losing one axis of rotation. There's a good video explaining somewhere.

      gimbal lock is/occurs when the metal rings (gimbals) holding the spinning mass in the middle (aka gyro or top) line up.
      you will notice when he says gimbal lock you see in the video that the two inner rings (gimbals) become lined up (co-planar --- or 'locked' together). when that happens, notice how the entire inner assembly 'flips' rapidly.
      this happens at 1:49, 1:55, 2:01, 2:11 and 2:15.
      it isn't really 'locked in place', but they move in unison together in an unusual rapid behavior with complicated reasons (that I don't understand) that does not correspond to motion of the handle the guy is holding. so they call it gimbal lock.
      if that happens when a plane or spacecraft is measuring the motion, it's really hard to measure and so is bad.
      if you are flying a plane or spacecraft and using the gimbals to measure angle of rotation etc, you will get a rapid and strange reading that will be confusing or hard to correct for - and this makes the measurements harder, and so it is good to avoid.

      For LHD you just need to spin the handle by 180 degrees. And before you ask, hold it upside down if you’re in the southern hemisphere.

    That's not an informative description. Gimbal lock means that the axis of the gyro itself is pushed away from its normal operating orientation. To navigate it has to have the gyro's axis pointing constantly in one direction in the outside universe always pointing at, say, Polaris, or the door knob. The apparatus pitches, yaws, and rolls about this stable rotating gyroscopic axis or "platform". But when the gyroscope is pushed off that axis by losing an axis of freedom by the pitching, yawing, and rolling in such a way as to put all six bearings of the gimbals, in the same plane as in gimbal lock then if the apparatus tries to move against the plane of the locked gimbal bearings the condition pushes the gyro's axis off Polaris. The only time you clearly demonstrated the axis pushed off orientation is when you pushed it directly with your finger. You never showed it pushed off in actual gimbal lock.

      his video is more of a concept rather than an actual functioning gimbal locked to a certain direction like Polarizing Star
      in gyro-compasses there is always another apparatus that prevents the gyro lock from deviating from the eye of the needle errr North Star

      slacksijie it is. But at rpms as high as these, even miniscule mistakes can make it rattle.

    Since all of the Earth's alleged movements are non-uniform movements..one would think a gyroscope would retain it's rigidity in space, and show the counter balance of the gyro in action, while the Earth moves. But they don't. In fact a good gyro like the one shown in this video...can be placed on the table and left alone while it spins at high rpm. And it will just stay perfectly still, no "counter-intuitive response" from the Earth turning and spinning. This is most suspect indeed. The exact same can be said of the worlds tallest pendulum. One would think it would eventually start swinging on it's own. But they don't. They never have. The one in the Smithsonian requires a motor hidden in the ceiling to force it to swing...because the Earth never will make it swing. So again...no reaction from a gyro, and no reaction from a pendulum. If left alone, both experiments FAIL horribly. YOU have to swing the pendulum with a motor. YOU have to push on that gyro to get a response. The purpose of those experiments was to show the Earth force the gyro to move without you touching it. The purpose of those experiments was to show the Earth make the pendulum swing without you touching it. SO THEY WERE BOTH A HUGE FAILURE!!!

      i mean insert a Bedini Flyweel inside and use the arms that keep the Bedini inside to re arm the circuit i did it but i dont have evidence anymore allot of reasons sorry but it works
