Christians in the West are conflicted and, in many respects, mirror the attitudes and beliefs of the Sadducees of Jesus' time. They became wealthy, relied on themselves to meet their own needs, and reduced their Judaic beliefs down to a moral code to guide them. Since they no longer had a daily "need" for God, they were "having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power." They relied on their intellect and denied the spiritual realm, thus falling victim to the spiritual war raging around them.
