Every Dominion Game Ever

  • Dominion (we have 1st Edition), designed by Donald X. Vaccarino in 2008, has been an extremely popular deck-builder that took the board game community by storm. Our experiences with the base game have been entertaining as hell, and this is a lot of what goes through Ashton's head while he plays the game. Namely library being a little crazy, and witches being hilarious. May have to make another Dominion video if we get the expansions.
Dominion 1st Edition is a medieval themed card game with take that (the witch), variable setup, and hand management where players race to have the most land in their kingdom, buying currency, actions, and land itself. Its not a collectible card game like Magic the Gathering or Yugioh, but plays in a similar manner due to probabilities in deck construction and playing 5 cards from a hand on your turn.

@@Misterparkour2012 I mean, I don't have any problem with it, but of course it's not dependant only on me but on my whole gaming group as well, and while they do have a decent grasp of English sometimes they get technicalities mixed up for understanding something slightly wrong, which ends up screwing them over. What I did was making a proxy with the translated text for each untranslated card, then when setting up the game I put the proxy next to each kingdom card pile.
We had a similar problem with Smash Up! (Pretty Pretty was the last expansion translated to Spanish), except that time I had to make a whole paper for each faction translating all of it's cards. If someone was playing with one of the English factions I gave them the cheat sheet with their whole card list.

@@SquareNoggin I suggest you take a look at the Dominion strategy wiki to see what mechanics and cards each expansion includes. I couldn't just describe each of the sets withoug making one of my trademarked wall of text messages. XD
Other than that, Empires is known to be relatively complex when comparing it to other sets, not in terms of understanding the mechanics themselves but in how to use them effectively. Nocturne seems lo be a love it/hate it expansion, though most people seem to like it.

Pretty spot on, but I absolutely adore Dominion so I couldn't help feel a little offended.
I was surprised but my 55+ year old parents really took a liking to the game, so now it's our go-to pass time when I visit my parents.
Gotta say though, even though the base game (I started with 2nd edition though, so it's a little more balanced than the original I think) had me hooked from the start, after getting the expansions Dark Ages and Prosperity it reeeeeally made the game a lot more interesting and exciting.
When I play with my parents, we often do like a "draft" method of picking our Kingdom cards - we take all three randomizers from our three sets, and we take turns picking out a card we want to play with in that match until we reach ten. Picking totally randomly often ends up being no fun, but in our mock draft we can try and balance the supply piles, try to make combos, and make sure we have a decent mix of card types and costs and so forth.
But I totally expected there to be a wealth of game types that players have come up with to find on the internet; but when I search all I can find are the premades on the back of every rule book that the creators came up with. But surely some fans somewhere are posting their own game types right? Why can't I find anything like that? We find new and interesting set-ups every time we play, but there are definitely duds as well. Really interested if anybody knows about a mega thread or something where Dominion players came up with their own premades for every expansion and combination of expansions. The rule books only ever has a mix of two, but surely there are good possibilities to mix three or more no?

ahaha it's not -quite- like this, ESPECIALLY with 2nd edition that has a lot more attack/defense variance. You can always not play with witch as well. As much as I make fun of it here, I still love the game! -Ashton

I never play with witch, for this exact reason. It's by far the best card in the base set, so having it in the game takes all the strategy out of it; whoever has the most witch cards wins. And the game turns into a slog; it's no fun when you can't get combos, because half your hand becomes curses. No new player wants to play a second time, when their first game they were totally destroyed by the witch.
Also, once people learn to play a bit, I also exclude bandit and laboratory, as they are the second and third most powerful, imo. With those 3 excluded, I feel like the base set is a little more balanced.

I miss when I liked this game. Now it's just 98% solitaire deckbuilding with the only real attention paid when there's 2 provinces left, or if there's some strategy being used that demands I add 1-2 cards to my deck to mitigate the odds of getting shafted.
I highly advise picking up Tyrants of the Underdark if you want an upgrade from this, gameplay-wise. Everything gets you points, you're constantly pivoting based on opponent's actions, and there's always discussion about who should get the shaft this round. Only real problem it suffers from is the same as all deckbuilders with the best card in your deck being near the bottom and missing the reshuffle.

Star Realms also has a nice flow to it, and multiple interesting game modes as well.

@@stephanieaensland6520 I'm a bit tepid on it, and it has too much of a feast/famine thing going on. I like what they tried but I'm incredibly disappointed they doubled down on that design with Hero Realms; they injected even more RNG into the game by making cards stronger when others of the same suit are present. It's a neat idea on paper but, in all honesty, it feels like a flop in execution.
It's also why I actively avoid playing with the Elementals market deck from Tyrants; it has the same mechanic and it generally feels like whoever got lucky just gets rewarded.

I may have to check out tyrants then! I’ve got the Dominion base game (late starter here) but each expansion costs as much as the base game, so I’m not sure I want to spend and get any more. Tyrants might sound a bit more value for money?

You should definitely try out the game with the newest expansions, there's several new entire dimensions of strategy that really make the game even better than what it was.
