Inside a wind powered shark light for cars

  • This item was suggested by Eric, and reminded me of a similar one I bought a very long time ago.
Not much has changed, except perhaps the strength of the magnet in the mini turbine and the efficiency of the LEDs.
The unit is designed to stick onto your vehicles precious bodywork with double sided tape, and then makes a loud squealing noise and glows dimly when you drive fast enough.
Note that this wouldn't work very well as an ambient wind powered light in your garden, as it requires quite a high airflow to spin it.

My first electronics project ( Everyday Electronics : Damp Locator 1973?) needed a TIL209 Texas LED, I went to my local TV repair shop (there were a lot of these because TVs weren't very reliable back then - something to do with small wooden cases and lots of extremely hot valves and mains dropper resistors, yep no mains transformers in British telly's everything straight off the mains), the man looked at me, the spotty kid, like I was talking science fiction, "We've got diodes but they don't light up".
Got one mail order from Marshall's for 37p (3 weeks pocket money) in the end, it was so dim you could hardly see it.

I'm not sure why I was expecting more. If nothing else, it serves as a very simple demonstration of basic wind power. It might be fun to hack with a solar garden light, and give it a bit of a reserve to stay lit when you come to a stop. Love all the stuff Clive does!

Over here in Europe (The Netherlands) it's also not allowed to use blue lights on a civilian vehicle. Reminds me of a science fair project I did back in middle school: four magnets glued to a disk on a wooden dowel which passed over two sets of magnet wire coils with a green LED (probably no reverse protection that I can recall, but this was one of the old style green LEDs which were more robust for that sort of thing). Spin the dowel and the LED flickered a bit. This concept sold as an actual paid product seems rather uninspiring, though.

The review about it making too much noise and having to come off the care reminded me of a story. When my children were very little we'd go on road trips to visit my parents. We had a big luggage bag that we'd strap down to our car. I'd run the strap over the car, put the bag on top of it, then fix the straps over the bag. The straps went around the bag like a belt basically. One time we hit the highway, and suddenly there was a high pitched noise. I pulled over to check everything and nothing was out of wack, so I started back up again. I hit speed, and the noise was back. It turns out that the bag was sitting on top of the roof rack, and the strap went under it, so the wind from driving so fast was able to vibrate the strap and make a noise. I couldn't take care of it right there on the highway, so I thought for a minute and grabbed a diaper. I stuffed the diaper under the strap, and it was very tight. So tight that the strap couldn't vibrate anymore. We drove home with a diaper holding our strap in place so it wouldn't make any noise!

I remember driving my mum's car and there was a horrendous banging sound coming from the car at speed. Sounded like the thing was away to fall apart. Eventually realised that it was a flag she'd attached to the aerial, and at a certain speed it would rhythmically smack at very high speed onto the roof of the car, creating a very disconcerting noise inside the cabin.
Basically, if we've learnt anything from this it's to be careful sticking things to the roof of your car.

@@rickseiden1 That's what we've always done on our trucks. If you have a long stretch where the strap isn't going to be tight against something it will vibrate like a guitar string, put a twist or two in the strap (doesn't affect the strength) and there's no vibration. I've seen guys tear roof racks off of cars by letting the straps vibrate.

For example, headlight eyelashes, drivers seat that is so low the driver can't see out, a fat exhaust that uses 82% of available engine power to deafen everyone within a 2 mile radius, dropped suspension that prevents the car going over speed bumps, stereo so loud that the driver can't hear that expensive exhaust, underbody lighting, so the driver can find parts that were shaken off the car by vibrations from the exhaust and/or stereo, and illegal racing headlights to compensate for the over blacked out windows.

It depends entirely on where one lives. In Ontario, and probably the rest of Canada but I have not checked, a flashing blue light by itself indicates a road maintenance vehicle dealing with snow or ice, or preparing for either. Such vehicles with blue flashing lights may not have a red flashing light in combination as red and blue flashing lights are reserved for emergency vehicles.
Some other colours reserved for flashing lights in Ontario:
      - Green flashing lights are used by volunteer fire fighters responding to an emergency (not the emergency vehicles)
      - Purple is used for funerals

Another interesting thing to consider with these is legality. Here in Australia, you can't mount certain (red or blue) colored lights to vehicles (penalties are $110-$650 on the spot, or $2200 if you take it to court).
As always, before modifying your vehicle, make sure you aren't breaking any local laws.

Green is also illegal. Because traffic lights. Some idiot where I live had green parking lights (on a silver car - it wasn't even nice looking) and would drive around with them on all the time. Until he pulled up to the ATM one day and the highway patrol pulled up next to him and waited for him to come back to the car 😂

I should also add that my Nissan Leaf has a blue glowing logo on the front of the charge hatch when the headlights are on... Looks a bit cool and tacky at the same time. I'm fairly sure it doesn't meet the ADRs, yet the car is approved for Australia.

What about orange/yellow warning lights on top for roadside working vehicles? Like tractors, excavators, tow trucks or those trucks servicing the street lights (among many others)? At least in Sweden there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on who can have those, but you need to have a clear and legitimate reason to *use* them (which is one heck of a vague wording, but then I suppose it might be a pain to list all possible groups who might have to park and work in weird places along roads).

Interesting. I wonder whether it would mess with the aerodynamics by atleast a tiny bit since it is a turbine of sorts. And I would also wonder by how much the speed of the motor reduces with a higher load. This simple design means that it probably only costs like 5 pounds max to even manufacture. I like it. And I also wonder why they did not use a DC motor instead of a coil with a shaft with magnets since it should infact reduce manufacturing costs. The only reason why i think they did not use a direct motor is because of the amount of torque it needs to start up which may affect the speeds at which the car would need to go for the device to work. And the part where you said "It blows completely off the vehicle" made me fall of my chair laughing. (no joke) Great video as always

On the other hand, based on your review Clive, the chances are the thing(s) would probably fly off into the gutter before PC Plod got out their notebook. Then, on the off chance that the thing didn't end up in the gutter, it sounds like the LED's would be so dim that PC Plod wouldn't even notice them.
