    The Vicar of Dibley: Vicar in Lockdown
    Whilst the Vicar is on holiday, Hugo has to stand in for the Vicar’s sermon. He also tells us what his late wife (Alice Springs Horton) favourite joke was.

    The reference to David Horton "moving to Monaco" is all the more poignant now that the actor who played him has passed, leaving Hugo's actor and Geraldine's as the only members of the cast who are still with us.

    James Fleet just dropping straight back into Hugo with all his daft melancholy and gentle empathy. 3.5 minutes where he makes you belly laugh one moment and tear up the next.
    Also brutal (albeit in character) in this universe David abandoned his recently widowed son, now single father and made a point of not inviting him to his wedding. RIP Gary Waldhorn

    Used to love Alice, because she was so gentle and innocent in a world she didn’t understand. What would she have made out of today’s nightmares, I wonder? 😢

      You know... I think Alice Tinker Horton would have been just as obliviously wise as ever, just as childlike and positive and naive and wonderful as she always was. She would not have quite understood any more about today's events than she ever did at other times, but would surely have been as willing and enthusiastic to make the best of things, to be happy and help others be happy, as she ever was. I'd like to think, were she a real person and living, that she would be exactly what her fictional character was -- a refreshing change from the majority, an antidote to cynicism and despair. A perhaps simple but brilliant light in the darkness... and who would occasionally wonder why so many of us seemed so sad and scared and angry when there were still good things to enjoy, like family, friends, and Teletubbies, Curly Wurlys, biscuits, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter (AND the stuff she can't believe is NOT I Can't Believe It's Not Butter)... when there is still so much beauty and joy to be had in this life. There weren't enough people like her then. We sure could use even more now.

    • @nancyhey1012
      @nancyhey1012 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sclerismockrey8506 indeed, my feeling about Alice is that she may have been portrayed as the least intelligent character, but she never had an unkind word to say about anyone, and she always tried to make other people feel happy by the things she said and did, even if they were completely silly and nonsensical things. I think most of the other people in the village accepted her for who she was. David Horton was the only one who was gratuitously cruel to her by putting her down all the time. That was a bad reflection on his character.

    Thank you all for your tributes to my dear Alice. You are all so loved. I can never use butter without thinking about I can't believe it's not butter. And of course I know that real butter is not I can't believe it's not butter because it is and I can't believe it's not butter isn't. But when I use butter I always think about our Alice and the reality of butter. So I do believe that I can't believe it's not butter may in actual fact be butter and I can't believe it's not butter is probably real. I know my dear Alice is real in my heart. Always. And the darn butter isn't can't believe it's not butter except for Wednesday. That's when I use olive oil. Love you Alice. Always

    Poor Hugo.
    I remember when my poppy lost his beloved wife of over 55 years, my Grammy, back in May.
    He was devastated at losing the love of his life, and he hasn’t been the same since.
    I bet the same thing happened with Hugo. God, losing the love of your life is something that is extremely agonizing for all. The flashbacks of the clips of his younger self in love with Alice is also heartbreaking in that we see the flashes of time come together: we see the young Hugo, an idealist deeply in love with this woman and with his whole future being ahead of him; and then we see the older Hugo, clearly shattered by the death of his beloved wife, wisened with age and still grappling with grief. He’s coming to grips with his own mortality in the wake of his beloved wife’s death.
    I remember a Nick Cave quote in regards to grief: “It seems to me, that if we love, we grieve. That’s the deal. That’s the pact. Grief and love are forever intertwined. Grief is the terrible reminder of the depths of our love and, like love, grief is non-negotiable.“
    Hugo and Alice were meant for each other, and his love for her was so deep that not even grief can change that, and he will likely continue to love her until he himself takes his last dying breath.

    I can’t believe that, I can’t believe its not butter, is not butter, and actually believe that I can’t believe its not butter is butter, and I believe that there is actually a lot more butter around than anyone thought. This was a brilliant show, all of the actors god bless them provided so much enjoyment and pleasure, Jim Trot, the Dibley poisoner Mrs Cropley, Owen Newitt, David Horton and of course Alice Tinker, so much talent in one show. It was a great comedy show and I watched everyone as it came out, they dont make like that anymore.
