  • After getting my hands on Unconnected Marketeers, I became surprised to see that I had way more fun than any other game of the series, and I sought after the reason why I had so much fun. And coincidentally, I thought it'd be a good way to explain how the mechanic works as well!

    I love the combinations you can do with them, easy money cards, "not dying so that easy" or "useless for fun"
    Edit- ALSO! something I didn't know, you can buy cards with power!!! that makes it better!!

      Yeah, that's what making this game great, whether you're doing good or bad, you can at least try to even the odds.
      And yeah, buying them with power is possible, it makes everything harder afterwards, but it's worth it if you can gather power back.

    I think that's probably the most interesting mechanic we've ever had in a Touhou game, it makes the game almost similar to a Rogue-Like, and I think that's really cool

    My thoughts exactly, even though some cards may be broken I think the sheer variety of options is neat and definitely worth it. And luckily it’s not mandatory, if you don’t want broken powers you can just forego the offending cards. That way LNNNNNNN players won’t have a bad time... (looks at WBaWC)

      Yeah WBwAC was hard to play if you didn't want to use the mechanic unfortunately, I just hope the later stages won't make the use of the cards mandatory to stand a chance.

    This mechanic adds tons of replayability and I love it.
    Byakuren's card is broken as heck, especially with Sanae lol

      Something that boosts bombs in the first place is bound to be broken, but on the other hand this allows even beginners to easily get through the game. Though it's true it's not something I'd pick for challenge.

    this mechanic gave me so much more motivation to replay the game than any other game in the series. IN did great with its unlockable last words, PCB at least has phantasm to encourage capturing as many spell cards as possible, while for most touhou game replayability eventually boils down to 1cc-ing with every shot type on every difficulty.
    it's so much fun replaying touhou 18 to collect every card. it's also a nice motivation to play good since "you might get that one expensive card early on!" and there were some fun decision-making like "should i skip this shop in favor of potentially better expensive ones in the later stages or buy one to help me anyway cause lunatic is kicking my ass?" even exchanging power for lack of money becomes a real head-scratcher since lack of power is very punishing
    and the fact that we currently only have HALF of the rest of these cards? holy shit why must may feel so far away hsakdhaskh

      Yup, that's also one of the reasons I love the game for the time being and I hope that the game does even more with the cards with the final boss.
      For example, giving the boss an "Okina-style" last spell where she uses your own cards against you, that's be dope!
      But yeah, there's a lot of strategy involved, and I just love this.

    I often saw people joke about a shop system in Touhou, but I agree that the mechanic in this game is pretty neat :)

    I always loved being able to buy different stuff to make different combinations in games like TBOI or EtG, seeing it being in a Bullet Hell is pretty neat imo

    I've been leaving this video on my watch list for a while now because i don't want to get spoiled (Oh man, the urge to press the notification as soon as you uploaded is so tempting i tell you that much). But now that i've played the game i have to say that this is probably one of my favorite Touhou game simply because the massive amount of customization available and the rogue-like mechanism that leave more option to the players. This is like SA all over again except it's twice more fun and with more content to play around with the more you play.
    P.S: And also, nice editing as always!

    The Card system is super cool, but I feel that the equipment tend to be so much stronger than the other options. Aside from Byakuren’s insane card, having Cirno in the early stages feels so good, especially when you have low power and it’s hard to get max power

      Equipment really depends on where you are in-game, because most of them tend to do small amounts of damage. Cirno's card in particular shoots at random, so it's hard to gauge how much damage it actually does. Though most people talk about Byakuren's card, I actually found Saki's card to be much more useful.

    When I saw the game and its mechanics first announced, I was instantly sold, because of, uh, the exact reason you presented there. I think ZUN took notes from those western indie roguelites and that's a good sign.

    So far the demo was pretty good, problem is that I can't read what the cards do. But the game seems really hard so I'm really excited for this LoLK/UFO 2.0

    It's definitely a logical conclusion of the spell card system, in hind-site introducing card mechanics probably would have made sense to do from the beginning (although spell-cards have always been more a justification for nobody getting hurt and adding a system like this to a danmaku game is pretty counter-intuitive).

      In the game though, ability cards are definitely not described as the same thing as spell cards. They are just fragments of power from all around while spell cards are patterns, rather than simple abilities.
      Card mechanics have been there since Touhou 6, it's simply that both aren't the same thing.

    I love this mechanic. And i got them all totally legit by playing the game and not exploiting the living shit out of the store mechanic because i am a good touhou player just like ZUN wants me to be.

      It's not as weak as it seems but it's definitely hard to use since it seems like an hybrid of a shot from Touhou 7 and 14, where moving forward tightens the spread and backing up widens it. The fact that it also asks the player to lock the shot in order to aim makes it a bit counter intuitive. But the damage didn't seem bad on my end, maybe a little less powerful than the others but still manageable. 😀

      @@georgethompson1460 It's not the first time, the bomb is identical to the one used by Sakuya B in DDC, which also did no damage to bosses or enemies, since it cancels all bullets that are being thrown at you.

      He probably is, but it's true that I thought about Len'en 4 when playing the game the first time around.

      @@Surnist yes, the Ability Card system is reminiscent of Len'en 4, but the thing that tipped me off at first was Stage 5 of Touhou 17' - a haniwa character, who utilizes haniwa-looking enemies is battle? A modern-looking city covered in red mist? Sounds all too familiar if you ask me

      @@AzuRemilia I mean, both ZUN and Jynx are japanese, so there's bound to be some coincidences and similarities when you're taking inspiration from the same legends.
      Besides, I don't find this all bad. For example, I didn't think about Len'en at first when I got to Stage 5 in Touhou 17, because the setting beforehand was different. The mechanic here, while having some similarities differs slightly nonetheless.

    Im excited for whats to come. I wonder if there will be a gamemode that disables the cards for the people who want a slightly harder challenge or maybe a game mode that makes it so you get a random card every 15 seconds with some of them being cards that buff you like the original game mode or unique cards that are only in this game mode that makes your experience slightly harder. Just an idea that could make replayability more interesting

      I mean...seeing how the game will release in about...a bit more than a month, this is pretty unlikely. Usually the demo is pretty close to the finished game so I doubt there'll be a mode for that. Though there's no real need for a mode since that's already a thing that can be done. That being said though...you can always count on modders to add stupid effects to cards and the like.

    I am all for option variety for single player games, freedom to play as one wishes is great for player engagement. Broken mechanics are of little consequence.

      @@georgethompson1460 Sorry to break it to you, but Undertale hasn't invented the concept of both a "pacifist" and "genocide" run. In fact, pacifist runs in Touhou predate Undertale by a good margin of time.

    i play without special stuff...so yeah, for me the cards are awful, as the game is hell without em

      I mean...the game isn't as harsh without them. There are some patterns that are hard to read the first time around and the last card of Sannyo might cause some trouble, but that's the case with or without a card.
      It's just easier to read them after a couple of tries.

    the main problem isnt the cards, is the game is broken and the patterns sucks ass.
    also the real main problem is the card drop is RNG based and suffer from the rougelike syndrome, this really not makes for a fair game when a card give you an instant THREE LIFES or a completly broken bomb that skip 1 pattern and half.
    in general the game can be actually fun if you can choose whatever card you want on the shop. beside the boss one
