    Hi! I hope your citrus trees have survived any recent winter weather! If you're interested in learning more about caring for them check out this video on citrus tree maintenance: th-cam.com/video/TKxqYafWkFY/w-d-xo.html 🍊

    Wow, Scott! I'm proud of you. You did an awesome job on that citrus. You made all the cuts I would have. I did the same thing today for some clients on their fig trees. Your tree is going to return beautiful.

    ...just the information I was looking for! I have 70 blood orange trees in various stages of damage and each will be restored according to the techniques you demonstrated. Thanks Scott!

    I really enjoy this channel, and thanks. During that same freeze and and in the same town I put around my satsuma orange bags of sawdust and a number of 20-gallon totes filled with water, all covered with a tarp. Lost only 1/3 of my 12 foot tree. Incandescent lights is a great idea, and will use that technique next time we get a bad freeze.

    Excellent pruning job! I didn't see if you added support to the remaining branch. The greatest weakness is at the base of the shoot. I would absolutely drive an 5' - 7' high upright post (3/4" - 1" in diameter)as close as feasible to the shoot and loosely secure it. I wouldn't remove it for several years, until the base has lignified and can withstand strong wind gusts.

    Super helpful. I’ve got a lemon and orange that got hit hard by a freeze. I’m in Louisiana. I guess I should also wait until May to make these determinations?

    I don't like how those big cuts turned out.
    You've cut into the main trunk... that's not how you cut. You need to cut the branch only, up to the ring, but not beneath it.

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's fair, but that part of the main trunk was dead and wasn't going to heal over from the collar.

    So we cut our kumquat tree down to one branch like yours but now that branch started to have dry shrivel leaves. It’s been raining a lot and I made sure to water often if I see the soil gets dry. I plan to add compost soil to it soon. What else can I do to save it? It’s been here for over 10 years and it breaks my heart to lose it. Thanks.

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Be sure that the soil dries slightly between watering and drench the soil with liquid seaweed every other week. Best wishes!

    I have a meyer lemon tree in a container I moved it to a diy nursery but I guess that wasn’t enough to protect it from the cold weather. Tree has brown and green branches but I don’t see any new growth I used a 6-3-3 citrus fertilizer and nothing. Do you think is a loss cause? Thanks in advance.

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would wait and see how it responds, but you can try the scratch test now to determine the extent of any damage. 🤞🏼✨

    Not true about growing from seed they’re not always gonna be different it’s just gonna take a long time to make fruit

    Hi Scott! New viewer here, found this after the last couple nights freezing temps. I’m in NE austin myself off decker. In October I (stupidly?) planted a pink variegated lemon tree in the ground. It was flourishing until now. It’s pretty small and I wrapped lights around it. Today a lot of leaves were drooping. I covered it in a blanket for tonight as well. U think it’ll survive? Do those trees in this area NEED to be potted or can I just use lights?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brad! Only time will tell if your lemon tree survives as they don't grow much this time of year. At this point you could try the scratch test to see if it still has some life, and if so keep protecting it through any future freezing temperatures. I would give it a few months to rebound if you're not entirely sure.
      I recommend growing most varieties of citrus in containers. Satsuma mandarins, kumquats, and the bloomsweet grapefruit are hardy into the teens and are safer bets to be grown in ground but will require protection through some winter weather events. If they're planted with protection from north wind they will fair better. That doesn't assure that they won't be severely damaged by hard freezes though, so it's a little bit of a gamble.
      Best wishes, and let me know how things turn out.
