- Here is my complete tutorial on "how to" learn, practice, and play the Invention 13 in A minor, BWV 784 by Johann Sebastian Bach.
I will give you an insight into my interpretation of the piece and share how to learn it.
You can listen to my explanation and play while the sheet music shows on the screen.
In this video recording, you will see my view on approaching with separate and both hands.
If you are starting to learn the piece and it goes too fast for you, stop the video anytime needed to practice as much as you need, then you can go on after feeling ready.
If you can already play it through, even at a slower tempo, I recommend trying everything together with me.
I will give you an idea about how to play and design the piece.

Hi, great tutorial. I've been teaching since 1989 and I have never come across a publication which has an A flat in the r.h. of bar 16. Luigi Cataldi is the publisher. It makes sense grammatically because it is a sequence of diminished 7th. chords from bars 14 -17. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Do people complain about getting seasick watching videos with this motion? Or are you trying to provide the viewers with a multifaceted view of the keybed as you strike the keys or are you providing a sense of where your eyes should be tracking as you play (assuming you have a go-pro on your head or similar)? Aside from the question, you are a very professional player and explain this piece very well. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, I benefitted by watching.

Wonderful-but the contrast between the slow playing and the fast makes me feel that this piece is almost always played at too frantic a tempo. What's the rush?

About the tempo; playing this invention always reminds me my childhood and somewhat I find it interesting to play faster as I did back then. It brings back my childish emotions and thoughts. Also I have to admit I am a big admirer of Glenn Gould and apparently I am quite influenced by his recording. In any way I am not against playing it much slower of course!
@@Antune Yes, Gould's hyper-speed version is seductive. Don't get me wrong, your fast version is still wonderful-but your slow playing is so shapely and gorgeous it makes me want to hear both hands at this tempo.

Sorry to hear it makes you dizzy. Good to mention that it is the very first video I made. My recent videos are more stable.
I have several reasons to keep the camera placement as it is.
The first one is that I want to present the exact angle as I see my hands. I believe, the viewer must see the nature of the hand movement through my eyes because I think this is the easiest way to understand what I am showing and explaining.
The second reason is that body movement has a huge impact on phrasing and timing in general. Those two things aren’t always the easiest to explain in words. Therefore in my experience, the movement adds to my teaching.
The third reason is that I can show the right or the left hand at a specific time for the certain passage that I want to be the focus of the attention.
For me, the above reasons are very essential
to my teaching.

That wobbly camera is very disconcerting. With respect, the vast majority of those interested in tutorials, if they are like me, are more concerned with connecting the appropriate finger with the appropriate key on the piano. After that no small task has been accomplished we can then start thinking about expression and phrasing. Again, with respect deferring to the obvious well-developed skills of the tutor, my copy is marked 'Tranquillo'.
