The Amity Affliction On Hating Covers and "Misery" Being the Band's Next Necessary Step

  • The Amity Affliction released one of the most head-turning albums in the heavy music scene in 2018 with "Misery" and are about to dominate stages with Senses Fail. The future may be bright for this vested yet ever-evolving band, but according to vocalist Joel Birch, their success is in spite of a slew of misconceptions people on the internet have about them.
Birch talks about his disdain for cover songs, attempts to answer questions that "make him sick" and tries his damndest to sum up his band in five words in this APTV exclusive.

when This Could Be Heartbreak came out everyone bitched that TAA was stuck in their sound and the past 3 albums all sounded the same (they don't, imo)... then Misery came out and everyone was like whoa, this doesn't sound like Amity! like seriously? make up your minds, do you want Amity to evolve, or go back to their Severed Ties/Youngbloods sound? or y'all could just love each album individually for the unique sounds and messages they have. I know I do

Heihachi3110 I’m not gonna chalk Misery up as my favorite TAA album, but I like it. They keep the lyrical content true to TAA. Honestly the biggest change I thought was Joel screams the hooks while Ahren sings the verses rather than vice versa.

@@toyotaecw I enjoyed Joel exploring clean vocals. I can't wait to see what kind of balance they come up with for later albums between clean/unclean and who sings them

Heihachi3110 I thought it was well executed in the sense they stayed true to their established identity. They experimented, but it is still undeniably a TAA album. I’d like to see Joel explore more subjects in his lyrics, but I did think this album was like he said, a more mature take on what he’s written about in the past. I guess TAA is kinda Joel’s outlet, so I can’t blame him for the repetitive subject matter.

@@slish438 Their concerts are about unity, and serve as an escape from the real world. Someone wearing a shirt promoting a man who called my people rapists and murderers, focuses most of his attacks on African Americans, and makes fun of POV's. It's like showing up to church wearing a 'hail satan' shirt. I respect anyone who stands up to bigotry. I don't wanna play the minority card, man. But, its a horrible fucking feeling to have the President of your country call your people horrible things and then use them as political props. And, its a wonderful feeling to know that someone with a voice is standing up for us.

@@clintbeasthood9758 I had a whole paragraph typed out for you but I decided to delete it. Just please for the love of God never compare concerts to church. Don't compare Trump to a swastika. Because no matter how sad he makes you feel those were real people with real families that voted him into office. To deny their beliefs is to deny your own. Our countries may operate differently and we all come from different fabrics of life, but that Trump shirt is only discriminating if you let it be. This bands behavior is a poor example of how to handle this type of situation. You sound like a very well-spoken person, I do not wish to lump you in with the Wingnuts in my country. Many of us Americans are experiencing great success with him in office. He's not perfect, but it's what we had to work with. We all have bigger bones to pick, don't pick one with your fans.

@@slish438 It was an analogy. And, agree to disagree. He dog whistles to racists. We've all seen the rallies, the majority of people who voted for him did it for the wrong reasons. They all yelled "build a wall" instead of "give them amnesty" (which is cheaper, more humane, and better for the economy as they're heavily taxed and fined during the legalization process) Why is that? It's cause a lot of people who have felt small for so long, think getting rid of immigrants will give them more opportunity Building a wall is pussy shit. If you're afraid of an ambitious race of people who are up in my city at 4 a.m. in 10 degree weather shoveling snow, wanting to build a wall is cowardly. Be a man and wake up at 3:50 and be there before them if you want that job so badly. Also, I wanted him to do good too. The decisions he makes decide how safe my daughters will be in their elementary school, and in what condition the planet they live in will be, and so far he's been a let down on every important issue. Also, I never compared him to a swastika, that was all you.

I see what he’s saying about the covers but at the same times he’s only looking at it from his perspective. There are plenty of musicians who can play songs just as well as the original artists and if you’re a newer artists a few covers can get you some attention that just dropping your own music wouldn’t get. A few covers gets people to say “hey this person (or band) drops quality work every cover. Oh shit an original. I’ll give it a listen”. It’s not complicated. His comment was kind of arrogant tbh

Kinda not a new topic but imma jus put this out there. I love TAA. Ive listened to them for as long as i can remember. But Joel, you get no respect from me after your little incident with a Trump supporter. And if anyone wants to bitch to me about it, feel free to reply. But he paid for the ticket to support you, most likely paid for your albums, listens to your music, claimed to be a fan, but you kick him out for his own political beliefs. If you wanna avoid division, how bout not having your fellow members wear shirts with pentagrams on them cause that's controversial. Or say "you dont believe in god, you have no time for that" because that's controversial. Youre a close minded human being. You "love" your fans but kick them out for clothes they wear and their own beliefs. And still say he's not welcome to your shows. If it wasn't for us fans (Trump supporters or not), you guys wouldn't be where you are. You wouldn't be The Amity Affliction. You wouldnt be one of the first bands people think of when they hear the words rock or metal. you all would be men in a garage with a dream. if you want people to buy your shit and support you like we do, then do the same to fans. because if you're gonna be a complete asshole to your fans who have a different mindset than you, you won't have many fans
