I'm ethnically Indian but I grew up in Europe and Singapore. Years ago, a friend of mine from college in the UK sent the video for this song as a gag but it made me realize how cute White chicks look in sarees and encouraged me to date outside of my race, which was something I had not contemplated since Indians generally seem to believe that only Indians can truly understand them due to supposed cultural reasons. I didn't even realize how close-minded I was being- that was what I was brought up with. Fast forward to this day, I still love cooking rice and curry for my ethnically Swedish wife after 10 years of the best life I have ever known and my life revolves around her and our kid( and yes, she does wear a saree every now and then :)). It's a shame this sort of stuff wouldn't fly today. Maybe this is not the most respectful way for different cultures to engage, but at least we could have some fun even if it were at my folks' expense. Even if he's doing brownface, you can tell it's not from a place of malice and he is funny and that the ladies look beautiful in their attires and are skilled dancers. I hope we could all calm down and chill for a bit rather than freaking out about humor the way we are today. I would still like to see another one of these songs today although that might prove to be elusive given the rate at which we are becoming what in my view is overly sensitive to humor.
I think it might have to do with the fact that some people do use fake tans due to lighting. Watch the videos and live shows, you don't see the tan in them. I'm guessing it's to draw attention to him as well since the dancers and backup guy are secondary. I could be wrong.
Most tv shows are. Look up why Queen made Bohemian Rhapsody the way they did. It was done to avoid having to lip sync on shows like Top of the Pops and others. It sill goes on today and I think it probably will.
Most respect to the Ladies in the back (dance crew) - they really create the 60% of the show!
