Stan I'm so glad to see you holding the torch for absoutely cranked snares. They sound soooo much better than the boring/sampled cardboard sounding modern snares in heavy music. I have no idea why people stopped playing the OCDP snares of the 90s. They were godlike. John Otto in 1998 = god's snaredrum I actually tune the exact same way as you, except i also tune the snare wires super tight to minimise rhe snare rattle sound and so the toms dont make it buzz. And i tune opposite sides rather than around. You are spot on about the bottom head. I used to overlook it until a professional drummer once watched me at a gig once and told me i need to crank my bottom head to get the sound im going for. Everything changed after that day. Since 2009 ive been playing a Mapex Black Panther 12x7 popcorn snare as my main (and only snare), and it has a similar tone, and I absolutely love it. People always comment on it at gigs.
I never agreed more with a TH-cam comment! , let's not forget David's Silveria's Snare sound from KoRn especially early albums that's what inspired me growing up, of course limp Bizkit, Deftones, 311 all had amazing snare sounds!
Stan, I just got the snare that you use in this video. I tuned it just like you showed here and WOW!!! Sounds so amazing, man!!! Thank you so much, I’ve been looking for this sound for years!!!
Love this quick tutorial!! That’s the snare sound I like on my snare as well so this has been great to watch! I like you keep it simple with no talk of note values or frequencies.
This is so great to watch. Purely due to the satisfaction of the One who Hit's the thing!.. As long as That makes you happy,.. Aces!! This is a brand new take for me so paused half way through to comment. ;) ..eagerly awaiting results. I recently got my first ever 6.5 x 14 (73 Slingerland Sound King, restored completely by my which was grueling but highly rewarding :) ..so loving all the tones coming from deep but not too deep snare drums. Cheers!!
"Shut if off!" OR...just tune it a bit lower. :D In my opinion, that "table top tight" snare side is the key. You can tune the batter to your preference. But that tight reso is where all the snare responsiveness is.
Great Video! Just as a tip: In a lesson with the great Dave Weckl I learned that you should never use a drum key to check the tuning of individual lug points. Because the metal of the key will dent the drum heads and could also damage the bearing edges of the drums. So always tap the lug points with the fingers or a stick.
Matthias Knorr thanks. I appreciate the comment. I remember Weckl saying that, Ive just never agreed with it. That’s simply a user error. Honestly, who is actually hitting their bearing edges with the key? You tap about 1-1.5cm in from the bearing edge. Use caution, be mindful, and you should be fine.
@@stanbicknell I don't hit the bearing edges myself either. But it will, dent the drumheads (especially the thin snare reso). Even if you tap it very lightly. I know that from my own experience. So that is why I mainly use my fingers.
Yeah I guess it's just a matter of opinion right. I've found if a reso head is too tight it will cut through the mix but it won't sound as full and big. I think the biggest reason is the shell doesn't resonate as much when the reso head is tabletop tight. Don't get me wrong I love the pop I get when it's super tight

I love this. I've been trying to replicate that for a while but never got there. Thanks, man!
that snare sound is just too good
Stan, you’ve been a major inspiration to me over the last year. Thank you! Love pushing prime
Thanks! My 13” Pearl Joey snare sounds great now!
Love those RC Brass snares ;)
For anyone who really needs a general "note" of reference to the snare in this video, it's about a G#!
Appreciate it!

Awesome video! Can you please tell me what the stack cymbals are? Thank you.
You liked Carlton's Ludwig 402!?
I’m really not into the fat snare drum sound but this.....this is the shit

Matthias Knorr once again, that’s a user error. I’ve never put a dent in my head by tapping it with a key. I just don’t hit it that hard.
@@MatthiasKnorrMusic I'm sure he's aware
Any idea what frequency the bottom head ends up being? 400+?
That clip in the end got me like...: 😳
Can you do a tom vid
Do you use similar approach towards the entire kit? Or this is just for the snare?
dvdchng no, just for the snare. I’ll do bassdrum and tom videos in the future.
@@stanbicknell Cool! Loving your videos always mate
Yamaha 13x6.5 same as Joey jordison’s snare size from Pearl
Could you make a video on how you tune your drumset, please? 😁
thaaaaanks for this vidéo !!
Needa how to get my kick drum sound
Great vid! What do you use to record your IG videos?
Choked. I've done tons of tests recording and that bottom head cranked like that never sounds as good. Might sound great live but recorded nope
This is not true at all

Hey Stan, can you do a Tom video
you're the guy who's not afraid of such room acoustics :))! echo! .. .echooo.. echooo ...
Well, having such a great brass snare one must be really dumb to be able to tune it horribly)
I love brass snares. Nice one!
👍😀
Are those emperor black suede heads if? Is the snare head the black X version? This video is fantastic, I greatly appreciate your work!
He literally tells you what the heads are near the beginning of the video.
None of your guesses are correct.
Watch the video.
Saludos sigue así!!
Dude
lol 😅
Don't hit the snare side head with your drumkey 🙈
You are kidding right?
@@stanbicknell No.
@@arrowintheknee9956 😂
@@stanbicknell Doesn't it damage the drumhead? I mean, it's quite a thin head. 😂
@@arrowintheknee9956 no
holy shit i hope youre not married.
I don’t like the sound of any brass snares they all sound like you’re hitting a tin can.
Get hearing aids.
