BMW X1 road test review: Winning hearts and minds

  • We've never been huge fans of the BMW X1's looks, so we went into this review expecting to hate the mini SUV. Little did we know, it's actually a fantastic machine, well-equipped, well-built and definitely not as hideous as we'd expected when you get up close.
We tested the xDrive20d model, which uses a powerful turbodiesel engine and four-wheel-drive.

Just got one, used, for USD 33.5K, fully loaded. Although, we don't get the diesel trim in the US (wish we did). Instead I got the xdrive (AWD) 28i. It comes with 240hp and 260 ft lb torque, 0-60 in 6.2s, nice cargo space and 23/33 mpg gas mileage. I really like the half wagon and half SUV style.
Mine comes with extra goodies - cold weather, ultimate and lighting packages, peddle shifters, and Harmon Kardon sound system.
Like you, I wasn't first sold on the X1 and was planning to get a Q3 or Q5 TDI. But Q3 is no match, X1 is far better. The X1 has really grown on me and I really love the car and it's driving dynamics.

***** Great! I am guessing you got a used one? How many miles on it? Also, which trim: x28i or s28i?

don't be stupid, even the old X1 looked almost the best in the small SUV or CROSSOVER market, at least in some trim levels, i say this because even i do not like all BMW's, except those with X-drive !!!
and by the way i heard that the xDrive20d model has a more powerfull variant with 190 bhp (20d) and one even with 231 bhp (25d) !!!

although a good car, im not a fan at all of the first generation. the new one however is sublime. the x family of BMW for being different, they get a serious amount of unjustified hate.

BMW and Mercedes are very well designed but the technology is outdated and if you want options you'll pay around $50k for this car. A lot of plastic and in order to get REAL leather you have to pay more. Ive been doing a lot of research cuz I want to buy one but I don't think its worth it, these cars are money pits. Replacing things can cost thousands and there are are lower end car brands that have more premium interiors and better technology than these cars. What am I paying for in these German luxury cars? The name Im guessing and thats it. Why don't these cars even come with Wireless bluetooth? Thats standard in most GM are now. Shame. Get less for your money and better save up for those costly maintenance and repairs after 3 yrs of age.
