  • We go to the front line in the national protests, talk to Guatemalans to hear their opinions and explain a little about the roots of this upset.
    Amidst the vibrant pulse of Guatemala, a movement awakens, shaking the very foundations of the land. A chorus of voices, resonating with a yearning for justice, echoes through the streets. The people, with fiery determination in their hearts, demand accountability and reform from their government.
    The catalyst for this uprising was the confiscation of voting ballots, coupled with the accusation that the president-elect Bernardo Alavéro political party was not legitimate meaning he may not be able to take office in January, and a budget bill that slashed education and healthcare spending while increasing funding for politicians' expenses.
    The people have called for the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras as well as three others in the administration, accusing them of corruption and mismanagement. The government's response, a heavy-handed approach, has only fueled the flames of this movement, with riot police being deployed and a state of emergency being declared in some areas.
    The protesters' tireless efforts have garnered global attention and support, with many expressing solidarity with the Guatemalan people in their fight against government corruption and impunity. As the situation continues to unfold, the ultimate outcome remains unclear. However, one thing is certain: the people of Guatemala will not rest until they have secured a better future for themselves and their country. A future of justice, transparency, and prosperity.

    While Gautamala and all of the world deserve freedom and basic human rights it seems the whole world right now are struggling to fight for the same things. Even North America has so much gov't corruption. It has to stop.
    I love Guatemala and have many friends there so my heart and prayers go out to all. ❤

    Thank you for sharing this!!!! As a child of a Guatemalan parents who migrated to the US, I have a deep connection to my roots and it’s so sad to see that our people have had to endure this way to get the attention of these corrupt leaders. I’ll be praying for Guate! Thanks for taking the time to film and hear people’s stories

    Thank you so much for documenting the protests in my country and sharing this with the world, it´s important that people see what´s happening in my country since people are no longer scared of raising their voices for our rights.
    There is a lot of misinformation going around about the protests being violent, but those are actually infiltrated groups of people sent by the govt to pretend protests are violent and have an excuse to use the force agains´t people, but real protesters want to keep them peaceful and they are even doing great activities like yoga classes, dance classes, art, murals, music and shows aas a form of protesting.

    Thanks for showing the protests. It's 10/18 and sadly the protests have taken a turn for the worst. I'm living here now & seeing this is surreal. On one hand my heart is bursting w/pride of all but especially of my indigenous brothers & sisters. Leading the way are the ancestral authorities, the 48 Cantones. Look them up!! Meantime, you now have a growing group of folks against the peaceful protests that are getting VIOLENT & overall aggressive. Not understanding of the big pic or caring enough. Love this country but here the marginalized are the Indigenous or Garifuna. Sadly, Guatemala is a very unequal society so that is why folks are sacrificing themselves. This is a pivotal point in Guatemalan history 🇬🇹

    Thanks for the coverage. I was stuck in Retalhuleu for an extra 5 days as I couldn't get back to the Capital City to get home, missed my 3 flights to Belfast. We crossed many road blocks and it was a tough journey back. Bless Guatemala. What's the situation like now?

    Great video, Danielle. I just came back to Texas from Antigua Friday. The country seemed to be functioning well during my five-day visit. I took a two-day volcano hike to Fuego, and it was beautiful. Are you guys living on a boat and if so on what lake?

    Hi. I just found your channel and think you can help me out. I'm thinking of buying a sailboat at Rio D, but then heard of the trouble down there. The seller told me about the troubles and told me to wait. Now he says it's okay and things are just fine now. What I need is an unbiased opinion. Can you help me out?

    • @SaltTravelCo
      @SaltTravelCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I can confirm everything has calmed down it seems for now. Traffic seems to be passing normally from our vantage point here in the Rio. I don’t know if there is anything planned for the near future? There is a local rodeo type festival going on here at the moment and seems like people have arrived from all over. Hope that helps! Best of luck with your boat shopping! Such and fun but uncertain time I remember. We bought our boat here and are currently doing some big projects. I think Rio Dulce is an ideal place for it! Hoping to do an episode on boat buying here in Rio Dulce soon for our other channel, Pawed Crew. If you make it to town and would like to share your experience give me a shout. Cheers!
