  • Four years after a Fujifilm X-T2 rekindled my joy of photography, I've figured out which XF lenses are my favorites by looking back over the images I've shot with them. Though, yeah: I already knew.

    I agree with your favorite lenses! The 16-55mm is a winner with the X-T4 since it does not have IS, but the IBIS makes it far easier to use. Thanks for your thoughtful material.

    Yes! I’m just a hobbyist but the 16 f1.4 is my FAVORITE! So glad you recommended it! I do use the 27mm pancake during the day on the street just to be more inconspicuous.

    The 16-55 is my favorite lens I've ever owned. It was my first fujifilm lense when I switched to the X-T4 and I love that thing. If I'm taking my camera anywhere that lens is always with me. My other lens that almost lives on my camera is the 35 f2 WR. That's a stellar little weather sealed lens that's pretty compact but I think hits well above its weight class. I'm still saving up for 50-140 that's my attainable wishlist dream lens.

    Back when I first bought an X-E1, I didn't really want to spend much on lenses (I still haven't) but I did buy 1 lens, which actually isn't designed for Fujifilm camera, the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 Nokton SL-II. Optically, it isn't as good as the 56mm f/1.2, it doesn't have weather sealing and of course is manual focus but it is a hoot to use. Add to that I can use it on my Nikon D800 (it is an amazing studio lens for themed portraits). It works so well with the Fujifilm, it just fits right in, its flaws give it character. Put it on my X-H1 and it is the perfect 3rd party lens, it does everything and their isn't really a big draw back.

    My minimalist walk around gear is the 35 mm f2.0 mounted to the X-T30 and the 16mm f2.8 for the wide shots. Great content as always.

    Thanks Hugh, you have made my decision making so much easier. I have shot with every system short of the phase one, no joking. I am currently using Canon and unfortunately not happy. I have been researching the Fuji XH2, always having a desire for the XT series. I have been catching up on your videos and I think you have convinced me to go for it !!! I also have a deep love of the Leica SL,SL2 & SL2s. Thank you for helping, coming to you from Down East Maine.

    Thanks Hugh. As a stills only guy, I am absolutely satisfied with my 16 f1.4, 56 f1.2 and 23 f2. I do have a 10-24 tucked away somewhere for the odd interior/landscape but it rarely gets a look in. To be honest, I mostly use the 23 now, with a Tiffen Pro Mist 1/4 permanently stuck on it (and one for the 16 too). To that end, I was recently thinking of chopping it all in and just getting an x100f, but I just can’t bring myself to do it just now!
    I know you have also sung the praises of the iPhone as a do-it-all photographic tool, and I couldn’t agree more. It is fast becoming my prime device for recording images and it never fails to impress. I bring out the xpro3 for special occasions and it still blows me away, and the difference between that and the phone is still night and day but for most everything it’s the trusty iPhone nowadays.
    I’m hoping I have finally made a transition, from having to have images as technically advanced as possible to just needing the image to speak for itself regardless of all the other stuff. One can only hope... 😉

    Another great video Hugh! Great choices... I bought both the primes when i moved to X-Pro2 from Leica Q a year ago (was canon before that and my FAV lens was the 24 F1C.4). And when I got an X-T4 for video work for my business a few months ago, I got the two red badge zooms you mentioned. All superb... great mix of commentary and some lovely photos too... I take it your B&W were jpgs from the Camera with Acros simulation?
    Keep up the great work!

    16 2.8, 35 1.4 and 50 f2 on my X-Pro3 and X100V is all the camera gear I own and it works great for me. Small, light and the lack of choices lets me pay more attention to the world around me and that lets me enjoy myself more. Thanks for the great video's Hugh.....

    My picks: 16 f1.4, 35 f2, 50f2, 90f2...but I also have 80 f2.8 (SO much detail) and 50-140f2.8 along with 1.4x tc as that versatility. I keep thinking I should downsize but I really love each of these and can’t find a need for any more. Your in depth dive just reinforces a few we have in common. (guess you are staying 50-140)

    Excellent once again Hugh. I have the 16mm (and a few others!) and it is by far, easily, my favourite lens, over all these years (Nikon in High School, an EM!, then Canon for many years, then an experiment with Panasonic and now, happily with Fuji). Always a great way to enjoy a gin and tonic to close out an evening - absorbed in one of your videos!
    As you mentioned, and I often feel it’s lost on many, Fuji has nailed the “value”..build, quality, price, handling and image! Refreshing to hear someone else say what I’ve been telling anyone who will listen for 6 yrs now!

    I'm genuinely delighted that your choices so closely mirror my own. As most of my photos are travel/ mountaineering, I am on the cusp of selling my 16-55 and keeping the 18-55 (compact, OIS, great IQ for size, X-E3 fit) and 18-135 (perfect single lens travel solution, so long as you have light!). The 16-55 works brilliantly, but too heavy for me; I don't do video. Love the 16 1.4, and the 50-140 (plus 1.4 TC); never had much cause to use my 56 1.2, but I'm sure one day it will pay for itself! 35 f2 next on the list.

    • @mixeddrinks8100
      @mixeddrinks8100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kinda wish the 18-135 goes a bit wider to 16, that would of been perfect. But that is pretty much the lens I take when traveling by air, so compact, if only it works with the TC, that would be magical.

    How do they do on sony a72 ,in the future going to get the 56 mm 1.2 - love the look of the 1.2 ---- the fuji lens adapted on other camera, the most likely ok I would think , you just have to do it in manual mode.

    I couldn’t agree more with the video lenses. I use a 16-55 and 50-140 for every two camera interview. For photos I prefer the 35 1.4 though because I feel like I see everything in 50mm and the soft feel of that lens can give you some vintage vibes sometimes especially when mixed with some film simulation recipes.

    Lovely review and prelude to a day of shooting with said lenses tomorrow. I love being able to adjust from rainy day 50 f2 to a faster 56 1.2 as the night falls and the rain stops. Really gives a lot of flexibility for light and rain conditions.

    My picks; 16 1.4, 35 1.4, 56 1.2r, 50-140. The 16 is really sharp and bright, the 35 is a bit special, small and compliments xf bodies, the 56 from f2 is fantastic, and 50-140 is great for event work.

    I completely agree. The 16. 1.4 is my absolute favourite lens. It's the perfect street lens for me and wide enough for landscapes. It is the reason I'm not really considering changing to Nikon or Sony mirrorless. I'm not sure I would get a lens that good (if one exists, it will be >2000 for sure or even more like Leica SL). I will try the 18mm 1.4 when it arrives because it will be even smaller. The 16-55 is so superb that I have not bought a portrait Fuji prime as yet, but both the 50mm F1 and the 56mm 1.2 are very seductive. I own the Voigtländer 58mm 1.4 Manual Focus, which is superb, but something completely different and quite difficult to use (though the IQ is breathtaking if one gets it right). The 35mm 1.4 also has a lot of character.

    My favorite lens I've ever used is my 56mm 1.2 on my X-T3. Love the combo both for low light event work and portraits of my lady. But my go-anywhere-take-with-me setup is the X-E3 + 27mm 2.8. It's basically a budget X100 series camera with the possibility to put the wonderful 56mm on it, if I ever need it. :) And the 27mm is super sharp as well.

    16-55/2.8, 16/1.4 and 56/1.2 are already in the bag. However, I couldn't force myself to buy into 50-140/2.8... perhaps course the bulk and weight of my Canon/Nikon variant of that lens is too much for what I do. Much more interested in the 90/2...

    I left Nikon and entered the world of Fujifilm with the X-H1. My first and, for a time, only lens was the 16-55mm f/2.8. I fell in love with the images because of the sharpness of that lens. A short time later, I bought an X-E3 for my wife, with the 35mm f/2. She stole my 16-55mm and NEVER gave it back. (Amazingly, we’re still together.)

      What are your main uses for it? I currently have a 90mm f2 that I use for (amateur/family) portraits and professional product photography but as good as it is I have decided to trade it for the 50-140mm 2.8 for the extra versatility - particularly in run and gun scenarios. However, I fear I might miss the 90mm f2 for the really artistic portrait/product shots but as I'm not doing them regularly I am thinking the 50mm f2 might fill that gap for me. Thanks.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own the 16-55/2.8, so that ought to tell you something, though when I do use it it’s typical for video, not stills. I have the 33/1.4 in-house at the moment for evaluation, but based just on peering through the viewfinder of an X-T4 with it (and recognizing it’s a narrower field of view), I’d be more inclined to the 33 as the one prime to have if I could have only one. Hold that thought.

    I am trying to choose between my Fuji gear xt3 and some of my favourite lenses of all time the 16 the 56 the 50-140 don’t like the feel of the 16-55 but I prefer IF and my Nikon gear trying the z6 some z glass and older f mount basically my issue is the results into light room
    Is this a reflection of my abilities my use of the camera settings or the actual output
    I love the Fuji experience but the Nikon seems to nail it so consistently

    Back in January this year, it was with long thought out and sad reluctance that I had to give up with my Fuji gear and move on to something else. No reason to explain because it is only relative to me. With five years of usage and having owned over twenty lenses during that time (including all the red badge zooms and all the 1.x primes except for the APD), these are the lenses I miss the most: XF14, XF16 1.4, XF23 1.4, XF27, XF16-55, Voigtlander 58mm 1.4, and the XF90. When I purchased the XF80, I could not let go of the XF90. And even though, I had the XF50-140 - I would find a way to use the 90 over it. The XF27 pancake on an X-E body was a sheer pleasure to use. If I do get a Fuji again, it will be the X100v or an X-E4 with the XF27 mark II. BTW: I do agree with you about the 16-55.

    in your leica video you said 135 2.8 is your favorite. you may want to try the Fujifilm 90 F2 which is a 135 2.8 FF equivalent. take a look at the mtf chart. extreme performance wide open. just a tip. (if you have an interest in having another portrait lens)

    Interesting review. Thank you. I especially enjoyed the prose intermission. Nice touch! After 18 months of switching between 35, 50, and 90, I recently made a deliberate decision to stick with only the 50. The 50 currently brings me the greatest joy and I want to thoroughly understand that focal length. I want to know it like I know my name. So, for now 3 Ms and 3 50s are in my bag. I’m good with that. Thankfully I’ve learned that the person I need to satisfy most is me. Sort of back to that “chasing” thing that Claudia advised me on, right? I have to chase myself first before I can catch anyone else.
