NR17● Mannich Reaction | Miss chemistry

The Mannich reaction is an organic reaction which consists of an amino alkylation of an acidic proton placed next to a carbonyl functional group by formaldehyde and a primary or secondary amine or ammonia. The final product is a β-amino-carbonyl compound also known as a Mannich base. Reactions between aldimines and α-methylene carbonyls are also considered Mannich reactions because of these imines from between amines and aldehydes.
The mechanism of the Mannich reaction starts with the formation of an iminium ion from the amine and the formaladheyde.

Mam why the e- of nitrogen doesn't attack at the O directly????

Bcz after getting the cabonyl oxygen protonated, the positively charged oxygen will be desperate to neutralize the charge so it will drag electron density from the pie bond resulting carbonyl carbon highly electrophilic. That's why nitrogen will attack carbon instead of positively charged oxygen.again if it attacks on oxygen, bond formation will be between oxygen and nitrongen thereby oxygen is now tetravalent which is impossible.
