I have had as my goal, from my first attempts, onward, writing surf guitar instrumentals, to rival the the quality, and simplicity of the songs you have mentioned. To discover what makes for a quality, stripped down, guitar riff that provides imagery, and instantly, seemingly, familiarity in the mind of the listener. The kind of thing that makes you want to hear it again. I just let the song be how it felt that day reading of Rell Sunn's passing. ~d
This song is a singular inspiration to me. Dave, you know that because I told you so in person more than once : ) In fact, the first time I saw Slacktone I knew what I wanted to try to do with the rest of my time as an aspiring guitarist. THANK YOU for putting this up Dave. As for the comment above, there is no need to disrespect this piece in relation to other pieces; it more than stands on its own. And for those to whom it speaks, trust me, it does so profoundly.
I wish more great guitar players would be as generous with their time and talent as Dave. Posting this tutorial is a great gift to us average guitar players. If you have never met Dave in person I can assure you, he is every bit this chill and generous. Now please, please please post a tutorial on Bells of St. Kahuna.
Maybe this is a little late, but new to Surf and this is a great song! Thank goodness for TH-cam, or many of us would never have heard all this great new age Surf music.
Amazing. Your technique, by itself is killer, but your writing skill, phrasing, note selection and placement are so advanced beyond traditional pop surf. All that and then the tone for decades. It's the whole package. Bravo dude. Bra-vo. :) Innovator!
Dave, this song has always given me goosebumps. Thanks for sharing all this! Loving your work. I remember seeing you about 10 years ago at WildAtHeart in Berlin and it's still one of my all time favorite gigs. What a night!
I have no idea if Big Tom is around anymore, but his comment is asinine. I would put Mr. Wronski right on top of the list of both surf guitarists and surf composers. You alternately make we want to practice my guitar, or burn my guitar, depending on my mood at that moment. Thank you for posting this. When the day comes, I'd like it played at my funeral.
If you have ever heard this played live you would change your tune. I have heard ALL of the songs you have listed and have played them all to death in a thousand various gigs. Not ONE of them can hold up to this song played live. Walk don't run.....are you fricken kidding me?!?!?!?!
While excellent in concept and execution, it is asinine to put this rather amorphous composition ahead of such Instro classics as Pipeline, Penetration, Baja, The Hearse, Black Sand Beach, Journey to the Stars, Squad Car, or Walk Don't Run, and that is without including ANY of the monster classics by bands such as The Shadows for God's sake! Wronski is an accomplished, mega-proficient guitarist, but he is no Mozart either. Let's keep our enthusiasm in proper perspective here, Mr. Gardner!
Never tired to hear that Master song....again and again and again ....magnific sound Dave ! thanks...
Dave… I love your music and your playing. You are Maestro of the surf guitar.
One of the best songs ever written
kinda speechless, thanks!
Thanks for making this viewable again! Seemed to have disappeared for many months! Just wonderful to see the various elements of this masterpiece.

That 12-string effect is one of the coolest things I've heard. Thanks for showing your songs, Dave.
perfect. Thank you. Very good. I srirting love jazzmaster after your song
One of the greatest pieces of music - ever.
Stunning!
Great tune Dave; one of your best imho. Love the 12 string sounding riffs.
I'm using a 1963 fender Reverb Unit, and a tube Echoplex. There is a little bit of VahallaRoom reverb in the recorded mix.
Thanks!
Dave, this is one of my favorites that I heard today at Surfin Sundays. Thanks for going into the details for us. I love the details.
Thanks Adrian... don't know if I'd go that far! I felt the need to keep this really simple, giving just enough to hopefully create a feeling.
This is amazing. What a talent you have. Thank you for sharing.

Wronski is GOD!!!
Do you mean Wronski is Clapton? :)

IMO, Awesome. Dave do you think you could give a run down of the gear, favorite pedals, amps setup and settings you use on the road? Please!
Dave! Huge fan of your sound. I was wondering whether you could show us 'blast bolero' it's a personal fav' -Ryley

Not that I’m aware of.... watch closely! Think FMajor! Thanks!
