    Nice video. Just remember when you measure a fish , the mouth has to be closed and touch the end of ruler . Can't do that with the fish grips.

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is absolutely correct. I only use the grips when the fish is either well over, or well under required lengths while on the water. When fishing on a kayak its darn near impossible to keep a green fluke from jumping out of the boat when measuring. I re-measure fish after they are bled out for the most accurate measurements.

      @@FatDadFishing Yeah man. I knew absolutely nothing about fishing. I last went when I was a kid. I learned to catch bluegill and catfish first. Then the bass caught my attention. Spent a lot of money on the "best" lures before I figured out how to fish for structure and to keep it simple. Thanks for stopping by.

    Thanks for explaining things, I often wonder what size/make bucktail/teaser you use

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am usually using a 3/4 to 1oz bucktail or flukeball made by Hurst Tackle. When I'm going after larger fish I tend to go bigger on the bucktails (up to 1.5 oz in backwater) and use larger Gulp baits on them. As for the teaser I go fairly small (usually a 1/0) hook with pink or greeen bucktail tied on it or just a bare 1/0 baitholder.

    Hi Rich, Great catch !!!! The keepers are getting hard to find this time of year. We fished the O.C.reef on Wed ( 3 miles off Corson's ) and caught two Ribbon Fish. Then we fished Corson's Inlet for about an hour but only caught a Sea Robbin and a Sea Bass. Take care and good luck, Mickey

    Great video. I want to start taking my kayak out in the back bays like that. Do you do anything special to clean the kayak after having out in the saltwater?

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't do anything special to clean the kayak afterward. Just a rinse as soon as possible, and then a full soap and water washing after that. They kayak is made for saltwater and has all stainless fittings which helps.

    25 nice catch , what is the average size on those in NJ .

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The average flounder caught in NJ backwaters would be under 18 inches (the legal minimum size). I would guess the average keeper size is under 20 inches and about 2 to 3 pounds.

    What a fantastic movie! Big fish, very informative, easily understood info, well explained and edited.
    I've a channel of my own. What do you think about a colaboration?
    As my salt water kayak fishing experience is somewhat limited, I could trade a trip to your brine with a Jersey lake trip perhaps? Ever catch a snakehead?
    Let me know what you think. I just sent you friend request on fb(Jim McRea).
    I just found your channel and am eager to binge your movies, but as I'm fishing Union lake early in the AM, I need some sleep.

    What are you using to store / keep your fish while still on the water?

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep it really simple. I throw a couple 5lb bags of ice into an old soft-side cooler and just toss the fishing into a trashbag, and then into the cooler. It tucks in right behind my seat.

    • @franksflytraps

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rick. Thanks for checking out the video. I fish the entire coast of NJ, but consider Cape May County to be my "home" turf. You do need to be careful in the backwaters down there. I had a 19' skiff and even that would bottom-out from time to time as I was searching for hidden holes in the back country. Would be happy to chat and go through the area with you sometime. • @flounderwetspot8524

    Gotta stop picking their head out of the water, you will loose less fish at the boat, otherwise keep it up !

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the single biggest challenge I have reeling them in on a kayak. Being so close to the water and having to solo-net everything can make it pretty difficult to keep them under the surface as I swing them in toward the net. Still trying to work out a more consistent way to do it.

    • @flounderwetspot8524
      @flounderwetspot8524 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FatDadFishing rod length was the thing that had me doing it. Longer is better for casting when seated and covering water but of course two long and you’re high sticking with a fish at the boat and dipping the reel in the water, (solved that with a vr50), but too short of a rod and you kill casting ability but you can boat them easiesr

    • @FatDadFishing
      @FatDadFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rod length is always the question...do you keep enough length to be able to get the tip around the bow, or do you go shorter to help with landings? Last year I was golden using 7' or 7'6 rods and a long-handled net. My new net is a couple feet shorter and definitely has me re-learning the art of landing a fluke.

    • @flounderwetspot8524
      @flounderwetspot8524 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FatDadFishing it’s all a delicate balance, you have to find the combo that works for you. One thing that helped me was the using the 2019 outback in the high seat position. Regardless even if you get it all perfect, all bets are off when landing a fish at the boat, crazy things happen lol!
