Life it seems to fade away
      Drifting further everyday
      Getting lost within myself
      Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
      Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
      Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
      Emptiness is filling me
      To the point of agony
      Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now, he's gone
No one but me can save myself, but its too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try

"That song was a big step for us. It was pretty much our first ballad, so we knew it would freak people out... Recording that song, I learned how frustrating acoustic guitar can be. You could hear every squeak, so I had to be careful. I wrote the song at a friend's house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, and we had been thrown out of our manager's house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It's a suicide song, and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song. But we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better." Jame Hetfield quote pulled from the Wikipedia page for the song.

This song is about depression and where it can lead too.
"Life, it seems, will fade away
    Drifting further every day
    Getting lost within myself
    Nothing matters, no one else"
He is constantly thinking about reality. Were born we grow up get old and eventually die. His depression takes over his life, lost in his thoughts nothing he does seems like it matters. Thinking if he were never born the world would keep spinning, Someone else would be doing his job, so why even bother anymore, nothing he does really matters.
"I have lost the will to live
    Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free"
This is the point he just gives up, his thoughts won't go away or change.
He realizes the only way to ease his pain, to set his thoughts free is to take his own life.
"Things not what they used to be
    Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel"
He remembers good times wishing he could relive his past when things weren't bad.
He misses the way he was happy and so full of life. He realizes his thoughts and hates the way he feels.
    "Emptiness is filling me
    To the point of agony
    Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone"
He feels like he's alone no one cares,
He feels like people dont even want him to be here. The happy person he was before his thoughts took over will never come back he will always be sad lonely and hurt.
"No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye"
He doesn't tell people how he feels, what his thoughts on life are so nobody will try and stop him. He is determined to take his own life. Why bother. The days grow as long as his thoughts. The point of termination of life he imagines the reaper creating him with arms wide open. If people in this world dont want me maybe there is one in the next life.

Metallica was one of my very dear friend’s favorite band. We’d known each other since early childhood and we were more like sisters than friends. Ride The Lightening was her favorite Metallica album. And mine. And the title song was our favorite. She’s been gone for two years now. She died from breast cancer. I cried while hearing this song and watching this video because I miss her. And I remember so many good times we had to this music. But it also brought me joy to see you two beautiful young people find this music, discover Metallica, discover this music like its brand new, and feel it, maybe even beginning to love it. Because it’s the music she loved so much. That actually means a lot and really you both really touched me. She would have loved that you love it. RIP Chris, I miss you girl. But I know you’re rocking out somewhere tonight. Somewhere in the great beyond❤️

"Metallica wrote this after their equipment was stolen in early '84 and they had to start all over again. More specifically, James Hetfield wrote the lyrics in response to one of his amps being stolen. Not only was this amp his favorite, but it was also the first amp he ever owned and was a gift from his mother, so it had a lot of sentimental value to him. The song is about losing everything and wondering if it is worth going on."

Durran Osman I’ve played the guitar and I just figured out a lot of the last solo (the first one seems a little trickier). The solo, much like the solo in “The Unforgiven” does a lot of talking in a sense. Kirks played faster, more complex solos and I’d rate this a 6/10 in terms of complexity, but that’s the beauty of it. The song never had a proper chorus, but Kirk’s guitar was plaintiff enough to make you feel the emotion he was trying to convey. It was all melody & emotion and that’s what’s important!

This song is especially close to my heart. Unless you have battled depression yourself you have no idea how difficult it is to be at constant war with your own mind. How difficult it is being your own worst enemy. Going to bed each night hoping you don't wake up the next day. Thinking about all the reasons you have just to end it all and struggling to think of just one reason to keep going. I know this fight all too well. I've battled depression my whole life and I give this song credit for saving my life. James Hetfield put to words what so many people are feeling and struggling with but can't talk about. The first time I heard this song I cried. The kind of crying where you make no sound. The crying where your curled up in a ball unable to move. But during all this I literally felt all the anguish and pain leave my soul. Music is the best form of psychiatric therapy. Very few artists have the uncanny ability to reach into the depths of one's soul and shine a light on the darkness inside. Three come to mind. Disturbed, Evanescence, and Metallica. This is why we love metal. It delves into subjects that most would rather just sweep under the rug and forget about. Metal is the voice that many just don't have.

They're just known for being Metallica. I love that you can appreciate the musicianship. The bass player passed away in a tour bus crash while on tour for Master fo Puppets. Who knows where the band would've gone had Cliff Cliff still been with us. Much love to the both of you . It's crazy to see how a mind can be opened all it takes is listening. Ya damn ears are open all time....lol. Check out Infectious Grooves, their bass player is Metallics bass player now.

Watch the Metallica behind the music. They performed this song live & the lead singer, James, stepped the wrong direction on stage & was standing on a pyro explosion as it went off. Dude was literally standing in a pillar of fire!

The energy of heavy feelings is literally in the rhythm and sound of the instrumentation beautiful and dark. Takes me to a shivering dying place in my heart, mind, soul, and body, proof music and frequencies can possibly affect you in such a big way.

This channel is so wholesome because if you go anywhere on the internet that is already into the music you like its so judgmental and toxic but watching ppls first impressions brings you back to being kid and discovering music and pure un-adulterated enjoyment of something new.

The music is in the way that person's mind is feeling the guitar solo is his emotions. In Master of Pupets there's Two guitar solos first one is slow and smooth.,that's the high, the second one is fast,n, fierce that's the high wearing off. In one the slow music is his sadness ,the fast pace music is his anger for them letting him live that way 👍
