For a secondary character, why is Man-E-Faces so darn popular? The story behind this amazing toy

when I was a little kid, i had no idea what "tooling" was, but the least the characters looked like He-Man and Skeletor, the more I liked them. If they were an elephant or a mosquito, I wanted them. Which is then weird because my favorite He-Man character wound up being Faker.

I personally thank the 2002 Heman show for making Man-E-Faces personalities being tied to his faces. It was excellent as he also came off as an actor!

Man-e-faces was my first MOTU figure.

Man-E-Faces was the first MOTU figure I ever got. It was at a promotion at Universal Studios, Hollywood on Easter 1986 which featured actors playing Skeletor and He-Man, and there was a life-sized Slime Pit as well. (I think we got to see He-Man get slimed, too.) My parents have a picture of He-Man and Skeletor autographing the figures my brother and I got, so that's how I know the exact date.
    ----
I think there was an MST3K where Joel invented a mask that was basically a life-size version of the Man-E-Faces gimmick, with the human face being a hole that showed his actual face.

@@spectorcreative1872 I found the clip (from episode 105 - The Corpse Vanishes), but I remembered it slightly inaccurately. While it really is basically a live-action version of the Man-E-Faces toy's gimmick, Joel's invention is a "Chiro-gyro" (as in CHIROpractor) and not meant to be a mask.
The clip is below, from the episode
      th-cam.com/video/-yq9CbsS6Jg/w-d-xo.html
There was another episode where "Demon Dogs" attacked the Satellite of Love (SOL). These "Demon Dogs" were "Battle Bones" toys painted pink and with ears added to them.
      mst3k.fandom.com/wiki/Demon_Dogs
And in multiple episodes, the Millennium Falcon is among a bunch of other toys and random things glued to the wall in a room in the SOL as wall texture, the wall and the toys all spray-painted. (This is similar to they way an audio-cassette holder is glued to the wall of the Enterprise bridge in Star Trek II to add texture.)

There's a Transformer that got the 3 faces, with different personalities, treatment, in later incarnations. In _Transformers Animated_ (where it first appeared) & then a latter toyline (sadly, the face switching gimmick was jammed, on many, on the later one), because _Animated_ did it, Blitzwing has 3 faces: normal/bruiser, cool/ tactical, & psycho/ random. Part of Animated's characterization of Blitzwing incorporated the gimmick. 2 of his personalities were arguing over if they should scan a tank or jet, for their Earth alternate mode, & the crazy personality took over & settled the argument, & said why not both, & scanned both simultaneously.

"Man-E-Weapons" was my first MOTU figure, given to me for my 9th birthday, and the figure that started me on my path to Having No Money for most of my life. 😉🤣
Yeah, I was one of those kids who just figured he was very tanned. After all, a lot of the other characters went around showing a lot of skin (or fur), so I reckoned Man-E was doing the same. I took the cardback cross-sell art to be what he was intended to look like, with a fully-painted helmet, and any orangey bits on his helmet that looked like an extension of his flesh onm the figure were just due to Mattel cheaping-out on the paint apps.
Looks like someone else pointed you in the direction of the MST3K Chiro Gyro as a potential basis for a Man-E-Faces costume, so I'll ask this: In that storybook & record set that came with the original Point Dread & The Talon Fighter (which you show at the 10:30 mark) -- is it my imagination, or does Linda Gary actually play Teela in that, too? Sure sounds like her!

I never made the connection between the Panache Place Voltron gun and Man-E-Faces gun before. I wonder if they were both mode in the same factory? They aren't identical, but it's obvious that someone just added some extra bits to the mold to make it look a little different like the extra cylinders on the sides. I'm guessing the handle came off a different weapon entirely, the only original part being the tail mount.

The problem with the suit is the fact that the character is in a barbaric setting where numerous other characters wear relatively skimpy attire -- not just He-Man and Skeletor, but Mer-Man, Beast Man, Trap Jaw, and so many others, so a lot of kids/fans/collectors see the "orange" as "flesh." A different color should have been chosen to indicate it was a full-body suit like Man-At-Arms'. Ideally, the color would have been a neutral one that could go with any of the three identities. (Gray? Metallic gray with a green tint?) However, that brings up another problem: "Man-E-Faces" is obviously a pun on "many faces" but three is NOT "many" -- at least, not in any number system I know of! This is a character that needed to come with several alternate heads with each head having three different faces. THEN the pun works.

Its like he changes alignment from Lawful to Neutral to Chaotic. I wear a Plague Mask when I perform. Many of my favorite wrestlers or characters growing up wore masks making me really upset when Iron Man or Spidey or others show their faces including Bobba Fett Knockoffs. I try to adapt or become the character when don the attire removing any fears or things that might hinder me in my normal identity or form.
