I break down how I wrote my second string quartet using my three-step method: 1) inspiration, 2) execution, and 3) reflection. 🎻 STRING QUARTET No. 2: th-cam.com/video/rfpkVMEgiW4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zKcJtzngtIHrogn8
Thanks for this walk-through, Saad. It's always fascinating to learn from composers on the "how" of their art. For me, the "how" of composing is as fascinating as the product of composing. I'm curious how long it took you to compose the piece in its entirety? As for my own pieces, there are times when I have composed essentially from beginning to end - and I've been happy with the results. But the piece I'm working on now is essentially an assembly of many relatively independent "episodes" that I've been sketching and stitching together, so that the various sections of the piece are in some progress of construction more or less simultaneously. It really is a labor of love, I'm sure you can appreciate that!
Oh several months during the lockdown though I didn’t keep track of number of hours spent on this one 🤣 - I’m glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on your “assembly” - I know the feeling 🙏🏽
Super informative and well explained. Could you possibly include sound snippets for the sections you’re explaining? I really like the ideas and connecting them to the actual music would be super helpful. Great stuff as usual!
This is such a cool piece!...it's very interesting how the microtonal elements used in that central chord really do sound like a passing chord in context...even though it is a bold step away, it's all relative! Thanks for sharing Saad; if I wanted the Score for this work to study further, is it also one that you create/publish yourself and sell via your website???
I like. Would you share commentary on pieces of extramusical inspiration? Do you ever create multi scores of one piece because of not being sure of how it will be interpreted? Not having musicians causes me to question every expressive mark and dynamic.

This is exactly the video I needed to see due to my recent interest in string quartets and since I’m seeing one today
Hope it’s useful 🙏🏽

Dude you are underrated
Most folks in my field are, but we love what we do 🙏🏽

I realized that after upload that it would have been good to do that. The next video I just finished includes all the sound snippets! :)

Thanks Eric! Yes I do sell this one too :)

I just have one version until I find out later that some things need to be fixed up. It’s all a process.
Did you tuned the string quartet to the traditional Arab tuning like (G3, D4, G4, D5. 😅
No way! 🤣 but I think my friend @wajdi abou diab has done that in his pieces. His stuff is much closer to Arab music than mine.
Antique style
I just finished a string quartet taking inspiration from this work! I would love for you to listen to it if you get the chance
