      I’m a lapsed Irish Catholic and I don’t get it either! I always think that hair could have gone to make a wig for a woman or child suffering from aloplecia or hair loss from chemotherapy. One of my daughters grew her hair during and after the pandemic and donated her hair to a children’s charity that uses the hair to make wigs for children with cancer.

      Supposed to cover their hair with snood or tichel or hat. Wigs aren’t allowed in a lot of orthodox Jewish communities. Chabad are big on wigs but most other Jews are not.

      @@lindaversil1121Interesting, where does your information come from? Most don't wear wigs? Definately not.
      Most Hasidic communities wear wigs, with the exception of Breslev, this is already I would say 50% of Orthodox.

      @SuperFredAZ It comes from the dichotomy of the Jewish belief that a man should provide his wife with whatever she needs to be beautiful with the horror of living in a place and time where Jewish women had no legal right to deny a Christian man wanting to r*pe her. That’s why it seems so nonsensical, women are simultaneously trying to be unattractive to those who would attack her while still being attractive enough to show her hysband is doing his duty by her. As a Conservative Jewish woman who often has to live and work in countries hostile to my people, I understand the need to protect myself, but because I was fortunate enough to grow up with rights, I resent the need to. Under pre-twentieth century law most Christian nations did not recognize Jews as human under the law, hence no ability to say no. Legal status was only gained in some areas in the late nineteenth century, in 1890 the Papal States still mandated Jews where clothing to demarcate their status. Again, this is all historical fact, heartbreaking, but true.

    What's the purpose of a natural hair wig when the natural hair is already like a head cover?

    • @Catmom-gl5nt
      @Catmom-gl5nt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It arose from Jewish women in Eastern Europe trying to make themselves unattractive to Christian men who could legally (and did) r*pe them at will. However, Judaism also calls on men to provide anything their wives require to feel beautiful, so arose the tradition to simultaneously make yourself unattractive for prospective attackers, but attractive for your community. Jews didn’t achieve rights in Europe until the nineteenth century in many countries, 30 years later the Shoa began, these fears exist for a reason. Did you see the horror the Palestinian terrorists wrought on October 7? Jewish women have never been safe or granted the same protection Christian and Muslim women are. Otherwise, October 7 would have been condemned universally rather than so many “civilized “ nations trying to rationalize r*pe and slaughter of women and children.

    • @alizahalon
      @alizahalon หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The mitzvah is not to cover her head, but to cover her hair. It's a spiritual thing. When a Jewish woman is married, her hair becomes like the other parts of her body that need to be covered. She can cover it by any one of a number of means. The Lubavitcher Rebbe preferred a wig because it covers better than other things. Covering the hair is not to symbolize that she is taken or to make her less attractive. Some people are drawing their own conclusions based on what they think, not based on what the Torah says.

      The native Children of Israel in the Mishnaic period were described as having skin the color of (a cross section) of boxwood, just as many native Sabra Israelis do today. The Mediterranean was not a dualistic black and white neighborhood. Intermediate shades of skin were the norm.

    I’d love to learn the origin of the wig versus scarf. Was it commanded that wigs are okay or was that something created as an ease by society. What did God say for jewish women. Personally, I don’t understand. One thing I would understand is if it was used to help women still cover but not be noticed in public. That could be a safety thing. I’m islam, part of the reason we wear hijab IS to be acknowledged as a woman of God. Either way, I’d like to learn more of the history and origin.

    • @healthymom8112

      It's not a Jewish custom or commandment. It came about only in the last 100 or so years due to women covering bald patches with a hair piece. If you look at pictures of Jewish women in the 19th century they all wore scarves and shawls. There are Jewish women today who wear hijabs, burkas etc. modern communities consider this extreme but it is the way its supposed to be, it's how our biblical mothers dressed, covered head to toe with a veil.
      I have friends who wear scarves similar to hijabs. I personally wear a scarves and shawls to cover up when I leave the house. No make up, no perfume or high heels. No bright colors. Wide clothing to the ground. Inside for my husband I can look like a queen, wear make up, perfume, jewelry, a beautiful colored dress etc.
      Our beauty is meant for our husbands, not everyone on the street.

      Many Rabbis don't allow wigs and married women cover their hair with tichels or scarves. It is common in some groups (such as Chabad Lubavitch) for married women to mainly wear wigs. The strictest Rabbis want married women to not only cover their hair completely but also advise not to attract attention from men and don't allow sheitels/wigs, especially long ones. Some Rabbis disallow wigs because there is a chance that human hair from Indian women cutting off their hair as a sacrifice and other idol worshippers' hair would be accidentally mixed in the wig, as the wig industry is hard to supervise carefully so that the wig is kosher. Any who married properly under Jewiah law is supposed to cover hair even if divorced or widowed. Of course, non-Orthodox generalky ignore the rules.

    they are good wigs but still very easy to see that they are. it is silly to wear a wig which for many of these women is much more attractive than their natural hair. these rules are just absurd. One can be modest in appearance without such excess.
