3 Days Winter Camping - Old school canvas wall tent, bushcraft base camp, snow blizzard, wood stove

- 3 days out winter camping on my bushcraft base camp, enjoying the comforts of a canvas wall tent and a wood stove in the winter holiday season. Heavy gear that needed to be hauled in, on 4 carrying trips from my truck left parked on the logging dirt road. It's worth it for a semi permanent base camp. For me nothing beats the warmth and comfort of canvas and wood. The cool thing with old school gear is that if well taken care of, will over last us. Can't say that about most of the plastic gear I tried before that is sitting in some trash dump somewhere.
On the first evening I spit roast a chicken. I've heard before in the comments from a few well intended folks and also a handful of self proclaimed "experts", that you have to cook on coals or you will burn your food. Thats not entirely true. Sometimes when you are real hungry and can't wait for wood to burn into coals, you can use radiant heat from the fire to cook your meat. After cooking plenty of meals on open fire, I can tell you it works for me. As long as the wind is steady, you can place your meat in front or high above the flames instead of directly underneath it, that way the meat will cook slowly instead of burning. Just a tip.
On this bushcraft trip, the weather was freezing with a blizzard hitting camp on the last night and day. Didn't even notice it until I got out of the tent. Thats how warm and perfect it was inside the canvas tent. I hope you all had a great Christmas and new year celebrations.

I love the smoke coming out of tent.
I know how the “experts” tell us how we should do things while doing bushcraft, but so many of their tips work for them but do not apply to every situation. I fix open spit chicken the same way as you do. I also prepare pork roast and many other meats the same way. The secret is “Low & Slow”...Ric, you know that your videos are my very favorite. They are my therapy and an escape for so many. I hope you and your family have a very healthy and prosperous New Year!! SKOL!!

I Knew some Guys that lived in about a 16 by 20 foot "Montana Canvas" Wall Tent for about 12 years. It had a pot bellied stove in it.
My Son was 8 years old the first time He met them. My son Couldn't imagine how they could live w/o a television. I pointed out all of the books they had . Then My Son understood.
Sadly those Friends have all passed on.
I Admired there Independence.

A Scout group I use to be involved with had tents just like that, they were bought, second hand, in 1946 and were still in regular use right up to 2000; they are still in existence. The brownies borrowed them and lost every pole, so I made some using banister rail. They are a bit saggy and stretched but I bet they can still be used today.

Amazing scenery, amazing filming of the scenery, great cooking, great campsite, beautiful dog, beautiful wife, beautiful life! I hope 2021 just gets better. Thanks! Funny about the lights, I absentmindedly bought some battery powered lights, not really having a plan. Went backpacking in November and grabbed a pack as I walked out the door. Hours later, camp set up, fire going, strung the lights across my shelter, instant Christmas! Love it! No surprise your artistry extends to wreath making.

Hey Nagualero. Another great video. I'd like to try something like that but.....my spit would likely snap and the chicken would fall into the fire....id walk head first into that axe hanging in the doorway and split my skull and....id probably end up kicking the paraffin lamp over and burn my tent down.
