RD vs. Nutritionists--this subject is SO important! People assume that the two go hand-in-hand and are basically the same. Sometimes RD's have more stigma because everyone believes that RDs only abide by outdated FDA-approved information, but it takes a LOT of hard work and passion into becoming an RD. There's nothing wrong with becoming a nutritionist, but RDs generally have to work harder and have more credibility. They simply just learn everything and then do their own thing!

YES exactly!!! Nutritionists can't work in hospitals and Dieticians have to do so much more e.g internships and exams and AHHHH but it is worth it if you are passionate about it

Exactly! Which is why I’m on my path to becoming an RD.

The difference between certified nutritionist and RD varies by state not just by country. For example, in Washington state you MUST have a masters degree, then you can take a board exam and call yourself a CNS (certified nutrition specialist). In California there is no formal distinction. RDs can do medical nutrition, help in the treatment of diseases, and diagnose certain diseases (such as an ED). Oftentimes the companies that are hiring CNS look for those with a masters degree, so the place where "nutritionists" with less legitimate training or experience are causing an issues is mainly on the private business spectrum, where people don't know what to look for. Depending on what you want to do will depend on what you go after. If you want to work with diseases, then you must be an RD. If you want to do preventative medicine or food behavior consulting, you can be a CNS or RD. RDs can do all, but for some people it just wouldn't be worth it because they don't want to pursue the clinical route.

Hello my apples fam!! Thumbs up for all y'all saving lives through nutrition! ** MILES (healthycrazycool) pointed out to me that i completely forgot to mention that there are also "registered nutritional therapists" in some countries. They are accredited professionally and have gone through formal education to learn about nutrition and how to apply it to their clients!**
I hope you guys learned something new or helpful today and PLEASE leave more questions below and I'll answer them in the next one :) Be sure to subscribe for more and smile because u deserve to. xoxo

Thank you so much for making this video!!!! I really liked how you explained the difference between a dietitian and a certified nutritionist. I am currently a sophomore in college majoring in nutrition and was on the fence about becoming a RD or a certified nutritionist, but I am going to push through and become an RD!! Your passion for this job encourages me so much:) Thank you :)

P.S I agree with you about animal dissections. I had multiple toad dissections in my biology class and they were all compulsory for my course (or else I fail...). I refused to dissect the frog and instead just observed for my lab. We do our best!

I did anatomy and we had human cadavers. It was pretty traumatizing but I think it gave me a whole new perspective on life. For those who have to do dissections, I definitely suggest just reflecting on the experience and making the most of it. I learned so much in that class I couldnt imagine not taking it. And I love Amandas idea of asking if you can watch and take notes rather than dissecting if you feel uncomfortable!

There are many misconceptions when it comes to nutritionists and dietitians, but once people finally understand the difference, they can begin to seek out the proper care they need.

This is so exciting! I live in London, and I am considering going onto a course to become a nutrition therapist. However, I literally just finished my degree in professional dance, so I do not want to go straight onto something full-time again :)

I am so happy for you ☺️
You are such a big influence to me.
I am glad to hear you want to proceed to become a physician as well. I have the same career goal, but what you said is so important, that we have to be open minded to see the bigger picture. So I'm not sure what I want to become and I'm glad that I gain a different perspective and learned something new from this video, although this is off topic. I am cheering you on as you continue your journey. 😌

Although not related to this video, could you please talk about PUFAs (polyunsaturated fats) like flax seeds, chia seeds, firm tofu and nuts like walnuts and almonds. I have heard that they are really bad for you because they are unstable and reduce life expectancy. Apparently they cause aging and disease by increasing prostaglandin and cortisol levels in the body, cause hypothyroidism, inflammation and are immunosuppressive.

Rube make sure to read actual studies about this particular subject! Although those articles may seem promising, it’s always best to read from the first origin/source. It should give you the clearest answer. :) hope this helps!

If you will be graduating with a BA in nutrition in the year 2022, do you still need a masters? Also, did you have to think/fill-in Pre- Requisites with a non-science major for Medical school so you can get in?

Dissections are an important part of a biology/anatomy/physiology education, regardless of moral or personal beliefs. It feels like saying you wouldn't work with someone in need just because they weren't vegan or your type of vegan.

In Sweden a nutritionist need to have 3 years of education. They also earn way more then a dietist probably because it’s a harder education and job. Here a nutrionist are focusing a lot on chemistry and biologi. I hope I don’t offend or sound rude I just wanted to tell how it is here in Sweden😨😅💕

Ellen Thiel in America, dietitians have to go through a rigorous curriculum of sciences too.

i’ve always loved your videos but was a bit surprised by your take on dissections. it’s perfectly fine to have your own opinion, but as a vegan, i would have expected you to have more compassion for the lives that are sacrificed for science. i just graduated with my bachelors in biology but never participated in the dissections. i made my ethical beliefs apparent from the very beginning of my education career, and refused to let an animal die for the sake of learning about their anatomy/physiology. there are plenty of virtual ways to learn that don’t require an animal to die. if you prefer to do an actual hands-on dissection, then you should at least acknowledge the animal that suffered for you. by saying that you have to look at the “big picture,” is kinda like a meat eater saying that eating one piece of steak isn’t going to make a difference in the factory farming industry. i understand that your degree may be more important to you than the loss of one animal’s life, but i would suggest being a little more compassionate for that one animal.
