I love how you clean up your plate without a single grain of rice left. I also love that you finished off your mom's vege and not left it to waste. Good job man! Enjoy your vacay and stay safe!

the fried fish is coated with turmeric powder and salt. that's all. you can add chilli powder if you want, but the typical Malaysian fried fish only uses turmeric and salt to taste 😊.
the green veg in yellow coconut milk is the fern shoot with turmeric and coconut milk. we only use the young leaves. you will know which ones you can use to cook by snapping it. 😅
and the leaves in the gravy is not banana leaf, it's turmeric leaf.

Joel - I just wanted to mention, as it certainly warms my soul, a few things that prove we are similar, like-minded individuals: The fact that you asked before just digging in (which btw would never be your style) what your mom thought of the food, and in doing so, seeing if she was finished with the food on her plate. PLUS also not being embarrassed or ashamed or above eating mom's leftover are all so very endearing to see. It's exactly how I operate with my parents at the table, ha! Another thing that puts a huge smile on my face was hearing you talk about that delicious last bite that offered a wonderful fullness /satisfaction. And I totally agree that there's DEFITNETLY a sadness of ones heart, for that last bite (specifically a complimentary, truly appreciative type of "sadness"). And finally, the fact that you immediately looked at the positive (one full week left of enjoying this delicious culinary cuisine), that it wasn't going to be your actual last savory bite of the Malaysian variety, which I too out right up there next to Thai food. Also, the fact that we have extremely similar food preferences/profile, doesn't surprise me one bit! I've been following your journey because I know without a doubt that if I was in the same opportunity, there next to you, I too wouldn't just be enjoying the food BUT also appreciating every single dish, every single bite, the amount of effort and time that went into making it and the people that kindly shared their food and hence their family/culture with you. It's the reason, regardless of my current mental and/or emotional state, watching your videos has and will always make me feel grounded, appreciated, validated, understood, and simply just proud to know that there's good, decent people still out there and that I'm not the only person out there that has my views and core principles! Food will ALWAYS be ultra important, not just for survival and physical health but for the health of ones' soul, ones' values - your principles and perspectives usually are derived from ones' environment and culture which food and its traditions, particularly the gathering of the family/community, from the sourcing of it, to the processing, the cooking, and the eventual consumption of it, all plays a huge essential part! Anyways, my apologize for this disconnected, disorganized rant...However, I deemed it sincerely important that I express/share these thoughts, all these positive good vibes that I get whenever I watch a super cool character like Joel, who I respect and cherish while at the same time making sure that I don't forget to wish You, Yanlan, mom, and dad, all a wonderfully healthy, prosperous, and enriching Happy New Years!!!
Your American born, 100% Thai friend,
Veerasak (totally failed finding a way to pull up a Thai Keyboard - I was curious to see if I could still write my name in Thai) LoL!

In the past, prior to Malaysia/Malaya independence, when our people are poorer, we used to grate tapioca and mix it with rice (expensive and limited). Otherwise, it won't be enough to feed the whole family. Cassava/Tapioca is very easy to plant and found in almost all houses in Malay Peninsula back in those days.

Welcome to Malaysia! For the first vegetable dish, that is masak lemak pucuk paku (pucuk paku cooked in coconut curry). Pucuk paku is technically shoot of large fern, very common in rural dish and usually people will collect these ferns in the jungle. So yeah, it's very nutritious and organic!

Good Morning Li & Joel and Blessings to you & the entire Bru Crew. Glad you made it back to Malaysia to ring-in the New Year with your Family. I've only been there once, to KL and to visit the Genting mountaintop Casino. Question: Are you eating with the hands to embrace the Malay culture? I mean, to an American, chopsticks are a minor challenge but eating with the hands, even when silverware are provided, seems to be over the top! I wish everyone the Peace of Christ Jesus in 2025 and many Blessings & Graces as well. Peace be with You!

It's such a scenic place. You were lucky as it was not crowded at all. It is one of KL's fave getaway places.

The yellow fish called kerisi is one of my favorites. I’ve always loved the way my mom fries it. You can eat it with rice and soy sauce (kicap sos) only, without any other sauce.

Boiled kassala is yummy with some anchovy sambal. Usually we have all the different toppings, coconut, sugar, sambal etc and you make it how you like. With hot tea on a rainy day or breakfast…yum!
