Genuinely surprised that Trixie spoke on Fix+ without going into how Frank made it to replicate a technique that drag queens used in the 90’s to make their makeup look less powdery to emulate runway models - which was to place a damp washcloth over their face while it was covered in cooking powder so the loose powder would melt together. I heard that story at least once a month when I worked at MAC.
It never stops amazing me how all of our make up techniques basically originate in drag. Contour, draping with blush, setting with loose powder, setting spray, nose contour, sticky primer, fake lashes, over-lining the lips… I mean the list goes on. The girls made it work and brands picked up on it and made ready-to-wear products. I still love Fix+ to make my powder melt into my skin. You really need to go to drag queens for makeup tricks. Whatever Tik Tok is doing, they’ve been doing it.

@@jennistone8740 well a lot of conventions of drag makeup are borrowed from pre-modern theatre, particularly Commedia dell'arte and Vaudeville. But once we get into the modern age and the Postmodern movement it gets REAL hard to say what is referencing what without splitting fine, fine hairs. The whole cooking thing was something queens were doing to emulate the work of contemporary trendsetters like Kevyn Aucoin and Bobbi Brown. As Tracey has famously said of drag and makeup both, “there are no new ideas”.

You know what, Trixie? Thank you for this video! Pre pandemic, I always considered myself to be a drag Queen trapped in a woman’s body. I was known for always over dressing and wearing lashes on the daily, no matter the situation lol. Being in lockdown, I got out of the habit of doing my makeup and when I returned to work, I had to wear a mask. By the end of the day, my makeup would be a mess, so I just stopped wearing it all together. I was wearing it so infrequently that I kinda forgot how to do it. I’m getting ready to go on vacation and will have to look presentable, so I need to start practicing how to do my makeup again. I’m starting to look at it again as something fun instead of a chore. Thank you 😊👍🏼💖🌸
