Definitely. Could you please do some card tricks with the application of the sleights that you taught so far? E.g, DPS applicable card trick, spread Pass card trick, DP variation applied card trick. It would be dope. Btw, no1 has done a New York's Taxi theme deck. It would be dope yellow and black checkered NOC deck. Credit me for the idea @zerodotseven lol😋

Hi Alex. I love your Videos!!! Please tell me where I can find the 2 Videos you have posted showing how to treat cards so that 2 cards can freely be shown as 1. Where 2 cards can be thrown on the table as 1 card and yet when you place the 2 cards back on the pack the top card can easily be removed. The tack spray works like roughing fluid. Had pressure on the cards keep them together, light pressure allows them to separate. If nothing else can you tell me the name of the 2 Sprays you referred to? Thank You, James.

I did it to a friend recently. At the end instead of guessing where the card is, I waited a bit (important) and then asked him to quickly give me a number between 1 and 10 (card was in 7th position). Because he subconsciously saw the 7 at the top of the stack a few seconds ago after the last open face cut, he said 7. WOW !!!! such a double impact. Not touching the cards and also he picks a number and his card is at that number. Incredible impact. Everyone was speechless. So I decided to do it again, first person did not give me the number that I wanted but the second one did so I went with him. Still huge impact. I think the fact that they see the open face card like me when they do the last cut and then I wait just a little while then ask quickly for a number, they most likely will give that number. When at one try no one gave me the number I wanted, I said the number where I think the card is and asked if anyone wants to bet on their numbers or if they think I will beat them all. Still was powerful. Love this trick.

    • @ZER0--
      @ZER0-- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

When asked to pick a number between 1 and 10, the most common number is 7. In cards the most popular card a woman will pick is the Queen of Hearts. I tried this once and I couldn't believe it worked. Mind blow.

I think tricks like this, will always have a place in magic. Especially when you can make your own variations of it. I started doing card magic in the summer of 2019 to help regain control of my hands after. I had my third heat stroke and died and I have some nerve damage from the defibrillator. So magic has helped me a lot! My wife loves seeing me perform new card tricks! So yes. They have a place in magic always. Thank you for sharing your magic with us!

For the setup you can alternate the odd numbered cards for spade, even numbers for hearts and face cards for diamonds. That way the deck looks more random and you can show it to the audience and even repeat the trick.

    • @eallawson7601
      @eallawson7601 ปีที่แล้ว

Nice variation, I will add your suggestion.
Also you can reverse the order of the setup, then when stopping the cuts at the indicator card, subtract the value of that card from 13 and add 1. In this way it's more difficult for the spectator to find a relationship between the indicator card and the location of the chosen card (works for every indicator except 7 ....... 13 - 7 + 1 = 7).

First off, let me just start by saying "thank you" to Alex for creating these videos. I have learned so much and I do believe I have become a better magician and performer from watching/studying them.
One recurring theme that I keep bumping up against is the following: "Sometimes I the audience is more interested/impressed with a self-working/simple trick then one that requires complicated sleight-of-hand." As someone who enjoys the challenge of complicated sleights, this can be frustrating. But when I think about it further it's actually a compliment - that is, it means that I am performing my sleight so well that they seem natural.

  • @toiomagician

I find that people who don’t know anything about card tricks love to learn simple self working tricks they can do for others, and it feels great to teach someone something they think is a “secret”, and it’s also great to then watch them perform it and get that reaction from someone else.

    • @AlexPandrea

There IS a need for these types of effects. Well disguised "self-working" card tricks can be very entertaining. John Bannon's work is one example. However, in one manner of speaking no trick is self-working. All tricks require thought and presentation and timing. In that sense, they all require work. I know, I'm being picky. Here there just aren't any secret moves. I like them because I struggle with nervousness. The harder I try, the more my hands shake. Bad for sleights! So, the Lazy Man's is wonderful - thank you so much. Best wishes.

But as some have pointed out they're only self working if you know they're self working! You can blow some people away with a simple card trick that happens on its own!

You mentioned the "21" card trick.
I found this interesting since it was one of my first tricks.
Even though most people think it is the most boring trick, i still use it 40+ years later,
    But with a twist.
    I do this trick blindfolded!
To do this, i use 3 piles of 7 cards facedown (makes sure audience believes i can't see the cards)
I pick up each pile and fan them to spectator asking them to remember 1 card
Then follow the routine for the normal "21" card trick. Again fanning each 7 card pack to spectator, asking which pile their card is in.
To reveal their card, i take one ofvtge two piles NOT containing their card, square it up, THEN take the pile containing their card and deal this pile one at a time on top of squared up pile. I deal these cards so the first is outjogged towards the spectator and the next card is injogged towards me. This continues (outjog - injog) the remaining 5 cards. Then square up last pile and place on top.
Pick up entire pile of cards by the middle of the long sides of the deck. (Thumb on one side, fingers on other side) Starting with the short end of the deck with the 4 outjogged cards
(when you outjog and injog, one end will have 4 cards sticking out and other end will have 3)
With the 4 cards outjogged end, tap this gently on the table pushing these 4 cards back into the deck
Turn deck end for end and repeat with 3 cards outjogged end.
At this point you should now have 3 -4 sticking out of the deck. Flip the deck once more, and with one quick tap drive thses cards back into the deck.
This will leave their selected card as the only one sticking out of the deck
Hopefully i have explained this well. This gets amazing reactions ands shows how even simple self-working tricks can be an i tegral part of your show with the right presentation

I believe that self working card tricks are important. No matter how good a person gets with out knowing what to say, why you are saying it you will never gain that practice of other people around you. My first trick was way back when I was young. I did OK but my nerves were bad. Fast forward to now and yes I still get nervous which is why I use self working card magic to open up with. I can see how people react and relax into slight of hand. My point is start with what you know and have done so many times you could do it blindfolded. Thanks for reading. Last point, I love your teaching methods where you cover what can go wrong just brilliant.

The hustle, creativity, and understanding of yourself and your spectators is in my opinion way more impressive to me than any method for any type of effect, be it self working or not.
Subtlety and nuance to control the crowd is immensely important, and I’d bet you magicians could “get by” on a double lift if that’s all you had in your bag of tricks.
Being competent in your performance and process, confident (trusting of others), and understanding of the crowd and what they desire from your performance is equally as important, and really proves to those around you that you’re truly an authority on magic.
The effect is hardly the most important thing imo and I think that’s why so many magicians have been giving a new spin and twist of similar methods that’ve been used for so long.
Under the right circumstances and in front of the right crowd any trick can work - albeit some obviously are more entertaining than others.

I think that self working card tricks should have a place in magic ESPECIALLY self working card tricks that involve the spectator because whenever we perform, the they spectators want to involve in the trick they want to shuffle take the cards and stuff like that so in my opinion you should always have some self working card tricks in your arsenal.
And I also agree about teaching tricks to laymen i remember once i was performing to my friends and there amazed and then one of my Friends came and he was like "Please teach me a card trick" and i taught him a really simple mind reading trick amd then he showed them tge trick and he was so happy while doing it and i was just happy seeing him perform it.
I hope the comment wasn't too long and i just wanna thank you for everything alex.

Self working card tricks are especially great for when your someplace with friends and you don't have your deck. Suddenly your buddy hands you this wad of cards his kids have been playing with for the last 3 years, and says, do a trick for us! It happened to me.
In regards to the 21 trick, I was at a convention sitting at a table next to Jon Rucherbaumer (sp?) who showed us a variation of the 21 trick where you make it look like you messed it up but the trick still comes out the same after a snap of your fingers. It's fun to do right after your friend shows you that card trick he knows.

Self-working (SW) effects are a staple for beginners. Easy for beginners without the advanced techniques used by advanced card magicians. Some SW effects are so stunning that even advanced card manipulators can use them to warm up the audience. SW card tricks that a person can do to get over nervousness, so he (esp. a beginner or some old guy) can use to help him get back into simplified card manipulation, to fit into the flow of more advanced tricks. I used to perform magic tricks regularly for years (55 years ago, but didn't do a lot because I did mostly kids birthday parties). I'm 76 now, retired, with time to do as I wish, so I am going back to entertaining myself and friends with cards and coins tricks. I no longer have the dexterity nor the memory for even intermediate card tricks that I used to perform, and even then, those tricks were very basic double lifts false shuffles, simplified palming, etc. I've roamed the Internet and looked at many card magicians and you caught my eye as one of the best teachers. Thanks for showing the SW card effects. Bill

Hey Alex, great content!! I feel that self working tricks are good on two levels. First, as an opener to get the cards in the spectators hands and make them feel more involved. Two, as a way to set a baseline for the performance. Once the self working effect is done the deck can be shuffled and go right into a routine. It can also establish early on the personality of the audience so you also know what tricks you can do and the kind of patter you can use. Since the first trick is self working it gives you time to really see what's going on. Thanks again!! We appreciate everything you do!!

Beside the fact, that self working tricks aber the perfect way to get into card magic if you don´t yet know any slights, they may also be really magical if performed right. I think the performance might in many cases be the even harder part and the part that eventually turns a trick into some kind of miracle...
