    Ah, yes! The great Meredydd Evans!
    Born and raised here in Canada, it's always been a bit of a struggle to maintain any remnant of Welsh ancestral connexion--the focus being simply too strongly aimed at England, Ireland and France. That applies to folk music as well as anything else, somewhat surprisingly.
    Whatever the case, kudos to Folkways for being brave enough to release such important material.
    Pen aur y chalon wir.

    I'm always very moved when I hear his voicie. What a singer, and what a man. It's nice and very interesting to have this videoi. anyway, I think that even if the the anti slavery song he talks about, Ill still will be always most moved by Cariad Cyntaf, even if the words are of course very old fashioned. The way he sings it is properly moving.

    I really enjoyed the album, I found it so relaxing. I know it defeats the purpose of Mr. Evan's album, but would any Welsh speakers happen to have a English translation to the song Santiana? Myself and a few friends would like to learn it to sing in pubs.

    @gmonkman"it is completely bizarre that the irish have an extremely rich folk tradition but the welsh one is non-existent"
    Correction: the Irish folk tradition is massively marketed, and therefore more widely known. The Welsh folk tradition is actually huge - easily equal to that of Ireland, if not bigger.

      ftumschk Welsh music seems to based on choral singing.I saw a programme once on irish television where a welsh folk singer was interviewed she put forward the theory that folk music went into decline in wales ,because of the methodists who became dominant in wales being against non religious music favouring instead choirs.Irish folk music kind of comes and goes and now its probably making a comeback.

      Interesting. That might be why Welsh choral singing became very well-known, whilst the (extensive) Welsh folk-song tradition receded practically into obscurity outside Wales.

    • @johnkelly3549
      @johnkelly3549 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not bigger. Equal maybe, but there's a reason why it's so whole-heartedly marketed.

    @Lillianux: You can do it! There is a really excellent free online course called Say Something In Welsh (you can find it by Googling). It genuinely works, both for learning Welsh from scratch (like me) or for reactivating "buried" Welsh like yours. Plus there's an active and friendly web forum attached.
