I think MLS should increase the cap to $15 mil and add a 4th DP. And should add incentive for teams to promote academy players to the first team. But MLS should implemented a minimum salary spend so low spending teams have a certain standard to reach. Then after 5 years raise the cap to $25 mil and keep the 4 DP slots.
That would help a lot!
I’d like to see it increase to 25 over 5 years or so (increase at 4/yr) but remove all the side rules. And absolutely add a floor (maybe do like nba or nfl and do 80%). But I’d like to see them get rid of the tam and gam and DP rules and let teams build how they want to.
25 would put them on par with the lower/mid table teams in la liga, bundesliga, ligue 1, and seria a. And I think that would give MLS room to grow into a legitimate league on the world stage without putting the league in a financial bind or losing the parity that makes MLS fun.
@@codycomer4623 100 percent agree with you. I hate funny money rules such as GAM and TAM. Also like you said $25 mil would align us with mid to lower clubs in top 5 leagues. I just worry about mls teams not implementing academy prospects like they are now. Other than that i’m all in for MLS raising the cap as long as it’s aligned with sustainable growth.
@@lawwrld2768 maybe they could approach the academy thing by removing call up restrictions from MLSNext teams and having guys that come through their academy not count against the cap until they’re over 21? It’d incentivize teams to use and roster those guys to get a little cap room, but not have massive multimillion dollar impact.
I don’t know the budgeting of each club so I’m speculating on the salary cap amount. My number 1 suggestion : Transparency. When Inter Miami was having roster compliance issues last week, we had zero numbers to look at. Why, how much?
Good job on Apple. MLS should be spending more
The time is now!
@@MLSMoves facts
I'm not American, but from an outsiders perspective, you guys do have a fun league, sure its not like one of Europes big 4 (England, Germany, Spain, Italy) but MLS really does have potential, I agree that the salary cap needs to be raised, thing is MLS now isn't MLS 15 years ago, if the money is right it could become a legit destination for players, I know everybody goes on about Messi (which was a big deal) but to me the most important deal was Riqui Puig, who was a quality Barcelona youth product who could have gone to a lot of places (his only crime was he wasn't quite as good as Pedri or Gavi but he's not far off) it shows that the league can attract quality younger players, the next step is raising the cap (even if it is gradually) to attract more Riqui Puig's or Thiago Almada's, geographically having South America on your door step is a massive bonus
People forget that the Premier League wasn't always 'the best' league in the world. The Sky Sports money came first, then the quality improved greatly later.
@AZee112 Absolutely right, I remember the days pre-premier league, in the 90's Serie A in Italy was the league, Sky always sold it as the best in the world, it wasn't until the early 2000's really, MLS is behind right now but it's doing a good job of growing itself, I'd just like to see the clubs allowed to spend more, it has a lot of potential, I think it's better than some European leagues, like Greece (after Olympiakos and Panathanikos there's not a lot there) I'd say MLS overall is better than Scotland (apart from Celtic and Rangers)
Nah I'm pretty sure signing the World Cup winning captain + Best player and the future Ballon d'Or winner was more important than Rique Puig.
@vampycaltm5273 Messi was a massive deal but he's approaching the end (he's not what he was but still an unbelievable player), I say Puig is a more important deal because it shows that if the money's right, talented young players who could largely take their pick of destinations are actually starting to see the US as a legitimate destination, Puig could have gone to a lot of places and he still chose LA, the key word being CHOSE
They should abolish the "pay to play" system in MLS academies cause what's the point of only signing random South American players if US players are just gonna be replaced in their own country. Stop this weird obsession with South Americans that don't care about the American game
We can definitely agree that ALL MLS academies need to step it up... starting with eliminating pay to play. They're (a few teams academies) are much better than they were a short time ago, but until they're producing enough young players to fill MLS rosters with top quality... is it really a weird obsession signing players from one of the most talent rich regions in the globe or just..... smart?
@ricopo3522 No South American player is gonna show up to MLS to play for passion. They're just gonna come play for the bag cause they don't care about the clubs. Look at players like Alan Velasco, Barco, Enzo Copetti, Corujo
& Douglas Costa. They are all South American but they SUCK
@@ricopo3522Its Not
Thats the SAME Reason Why Liga Mx Players on the National Team Suck
Because The Us isnt Focusing on Their Own Players to Develop and Gain More Basic Experience . They Got to Play and Gradually improve not Jump From Academy to Europe
You Cant Skip Levels and Expect to Really Develop Technique
Same Way If Nba Players Need 2 or 3 Extra Years in College to Grow and Develop
Thats Fine
Its Better to Be it That Way.
and the Mls League is a Perfect Balance league for New Players From Upsl or Other Semi Pro Leagues to debut and Better their game ORGANICALLY Naturally
Most MLS academies are no cost. The RBNY is free and is one the top academies in the U.S.
This has been the plan all along. Team Salaries have been DOUBLING every 5 to 6 years. If the trend continues, in 2028 MLS teams will be spending $35 Million per team on Payroll... and possible near $50 Million at the top end. If they step things up just a little, then that could happen in 4 years, by 2027 right after the WC.
Don garber did a great job keeping the league afloat all those years...but now? He's holding the league back. He needs to step aside. The reigns need to be loosened.
Yeah the salary cap needs to be increased big time. The transfer fee restriction needs to go away as well. And the last thing I would change is I would increase the DP slots from 3 to 5. You could really build a good team with these changes.
I remember when Chicago had a team. Good times.
I remember the 500 subs giveaway, congrats on the growth man.
We’re growing like crazy thanks to you guys!
I concur. We have the right model for our huge country. The franchise model + English style spending? The best league in the world in the making.
Keep it up man!
Thank you my friend!
Seeing in person the reception Lloris received at LAFC yesterday was pretty great. I imagine this is just a sign that yeah, players are starting to see MLS as a pretty good move, especially later in their career. I heard he even turned down Saudi money.
Lol no they are no Hugo in retirement now
@@footballherojamaican5361 English please
i enjoyed European football since i was kid and also a Messi fan, but i was interested in MLS before Messi even sign for Inter Miami. Now even Messi in Inter Miami make me more excited to watch the MLS. I still searching for my fav team in MLS, not Inter Miami even the GOAT is there. But i started to like LAFC now.
Come on! Be a Rapids fan! It’ll likely be depressing, but it’s more fun to be depressed together as a fan base!🥲
@@ShadowSoccerAddict haha, I'm still watching all of the gameplay and highlights of every team, the thing that i like about MLS is that every team can be a potential winner, there's no absolute domination yet. i hope it continue to be like that and the level of the game will be better in the future with more European superstar started to make a move to MLS. Thanks to the GOAT also for his move to the MLS. The logos, the stadiums and the name of every team make MLS a very big potential league to see as well.
Increase the cap and roster size
MLS should've added a 4th DP and raised the salary cap before the season started.
That’s cool and all but it’s not worth it if every player just wants to play for 3 teams LAFC LA galaxy and Inter Miami so it’s not going to help the league one bit
While I would love to see more Dips I do worry about over spending. I don’t want to see the NASL effect happen again.
I don’t think that will happen
@@MLSMoves@MLSMoves Over spending from the corporate types that did not understand football hurt the NASL. I'm not trying to be a wise guy at all, honest question. Why you don't think that could happen?
About time lol look at the attendance for CLTFC… Come on now I just want more superstars in the league 😔
i agree... sign more super stars. we need a rivalry here. BRING RONALDO
Minimal salary needs to go up, as well as number of foreigners allowed to sign, also add homegrown status. Let's say player is South Korean but he came to US with his parents when he was 14 and since then is playing in american team/teams, so after 3 or 5 years he should get that homegrown status and not be treated as 'foreigner', rather than that as a 'product' of one or another american academy.
Designated players rule should change to if you have 30 players in the team how come only 3 can earn huge amount of money? what about their teammates? that's basically a wage chimney, something which shouldn't happen in pro sport teams
Knowerofbans mentioned!
What transfer window will MLS change rules for?
Lets be real they need to get rid of cap all together and bring relegation/promotion that would solve alot of problems
I think LA galaxy should sign a striker from the prem to make the great attack better
1. Pay more to the players
2. Get rid of the Pay to play in academies across the league
3. Introduce a Pro/Rel. We have not just the MLS but the USL as well. Work harder to stay in the MLS or drop to the USL. Keep the Supporters Shield as the true League Champion an have the MLS cup become the Super Cup. It will be between the Supporters Shield winner and the US open cup winner/Runner Up
4. Get rid of Leagues Cup and keep the US Open Cup. Why do we really need Leagues cup anyway while we always face LigaMX clubs in Champions Cup.
MLS should get rid of cap and have some new owners buy some of these team with deep pockets and are willing to spend to get big time players; that the only way MLS will ever become a major league in the next 10-15 years
I would give more independence to each team, the MLS is currently too centrally controlled imo. Unless I'm wrong but thats what it seems like
I feel like MLS has PTSD from what happened to the North American Soccer League. It needs to get over it because this window won't stay open forever.
Let's try not be a retirement league again
At this point I think the league has a great excused in Messi to not raise the salary cap for the foreseeable future. Who needs to raise it when you have the cash cow that is the goat footballer? This is at the same time a good thing, because once Messi leaves they will be forced to do something to keep those revenue margins they will be having within the next frew years with him in the league, otherwise their revenue will plummet and I'm sure they won't like falling into Pre-Messi levels of irrelevancy.
Messi's arrival puts a whole new level of pressure in the future that will inevitably lead them to become much more lenient in their salary restrictions.
If Don Garbage keeps lowering the salary cap, MLS WILL have a problem that resembles the All Japan Pro Wrestling/Pro Wrestling Noah split back in 1999 because the league wants to be ultra conservative with players salaries, AKA, RISK AVERSE TO THE EXTREME.
Mabye focus on making more of their own stars then buying older europen players
A Senior Member of Apple stepping up to say that MLS should step up on spending is good. If it does happen then my hope is that Clubs don't go back to the MLS 1.0 of Roster Building. I like that Messi & Co. are in the League, but it's not sustainable. We've seen Inter Miami drastically raise Season Ticket Prices keeping the Day Ones that can't afford out. Any Team that's hosting them Away also has raised ticket prices. So now if MLS would have to Justify it's Prices then they'd have to Sign a Player of that Caliber once Messi leaves.
Mls needs to let go of this east and west conference and have a regular league
It will never happen
@@MLSMovesIt could if they went to a promotion/relegation system. I agree that separate east and west leagues seems stupid, this isn’t the NFL.
Don garber has done a great job growing the league but I think he's done all he can do. It's time to replace him with someone who can take this league to the next level.
Change wouldn’t be a bad thing
If Apple truly has that much power, then they need to secure the US Open Cup rights so that they can pressure the MLS to care.
But they won’t, because they have the Leagues Cup rights
Raise the salary cap by ALOT. Keep dp spots at 3. Increase u-22 to 5 slots and make homegrown players not count towards the cap.
I’d take anything at this point. Just want more spending
No more cap. No more silly roster rules. Give ownership and negotiation of players directly to the individual clubs.
Other than Messi, what Miami has done in the last year has NOT been good. Filling a team with a bunch of old guys on the wrong side of 32 is a recipe for disaster. Miami will finish mid table. Speed will kill them. LA Galaxy is team just getting back to being above average and only some Messi magic kept them from taking all three points. I'm not impressed by Miami beating RSL. Lewandowski is another old dude that MLS would only be bringing in so that he can enjoy another year or two of pickup soccer. De Bruyne said the same... basically, "I'm not playing in a pub league until I'm done with my actual career in Europe.
MLS has done the retirement league thing already. Why continue to go down that road? We want players that want to come here in their 20's... not their 30's.
The big fear: American players don’t get enough playing time. MLS looks more like the Chinese Super League or today’s Saudi
league. Go too fast: teams just sign overseas players ignoring development of American talent (just pass the ball to the Argentina or Brazilian player) - or - American players are overpaid and stay in MLS because it’s comfortable + they won’t get paid nearly as much in Europe. We see how China’s soccer development has stalled . Also in basketball where Chinese players stay in China instead of playing in Europe.
100% agree, this needs to be said more
That's B.S. any way you cut it. First off, the league has rules that limits the foreign players fulling up rosters. Secondly, competition spurs development, if U.S. players are just handed spots, that retards the progress actually. Third, the more relevant that MLS becomes, the more exciting that the domestic league becomes, the larger the talent pool will grow. The cooler MLS becomes, the more that domesic players will want to play in MLS.
None of those things are happening here. The only way MLS will ever become a top 10 league is when we start producing a lot of talent domestically. While an increase in spending may lead to more foreign players initially, it will raise the profile of the league and get more kids into the sport. This is a trend that has been seen. As the league becomes more popular, the quality of homegorwns keeps improving. In the case of Inter Miami, there are several homegrowns ahead in the depth chart over players on decent wages.
@@stevenygabbyperez695 The fear is there and we just have to look at the original NASL (not just China) as an example too. I didn’t like “no changes” this off-season but the league has said they want fairly big changes next offseason (so we’ll see). Also Next Pro has another year to grow… after two full seasons, a lot of the best U-22 talent is coming from Next Pro this season. Who knows how much more talent 12 months from now?
Apple is in no position to demand anything. It’s why they dumped the regional sports networks in the first place. Apple has an out clause. Streaming is a commodity. Let’s not out pace our growth. Let’s keep tickets affordable and stadiums packed.
MLS has several things it could do better.
No more caps on Domestic players so our best US players actually want to play here.
Change DP rules to where others want to play here in their prime.
Promotion/relegation, closed system profit sharing is lame. Reduces competitive nature and promotes stagnation. No motivation for clubs to build a legacy or tell a story etc.
Reduce who qualifies to playoffs if no pro/rel - reason: MLS awards teams that failed to exceed mediocrity in the table standings all season with playoff spots at the end of season
.
Anyway, I subbed because I want the jersey lol
I hope everyone is doing well today.
I'm picking up what you're putting down but man, this league is STILL run by the small-minded, cheap owners. I don't think there is a majority of owners available to implement we want to see. I don't have enough space here to lay out the necessary changes to MLS :) You hit the gimmes- the roster arcana that makes heads swim in alphabet soup, but there is so much more.
Hopefully change comes sooner than later
you can always force them to sell or gtfo. That's how it works.
the usa needs promotion relegation
no it doesn't
Apple tv wants to destroy mls...
More spending won't change the structural problems of MLS. It might simplify acquisition rules, but won't make a difference as far as US youth development goes and that's what will make the US a top league (and not just in the value of teams, roster wage bills or transfer values). How many MLS players on the most recent USMNT roster? Right--none.
They should get rid of the salary cap entirely. Will NYCFC, LAFC, Chicago and Miami dominate? Probably, will the league get better and these specific Teams compete with europeans in the CWC? More realistically than with a salary cap
No thanks!
I think American sports fans lose interest without parity. I think the salary cap is necessary to keep the sport competitive and therefore keep the fan base growing. But it should absolutely go up from what it is now
They won’t ever do that. They should let teams spend more though
So what people can watch the same 2 or, 3 teams win the chip every season like in Europe. That's wack.
Teams in the MLS cant even get relegated bro , people cant watch a sport with unfamiliar rules it just dosent seem like a real competition ..
I don't think there not goin to allow it...this is why. American sports are in BIG decline and futbol taken over the American sports it's like kick on there teeth wich means there BIG EGO of keeping the own sport alive...the states living on a big hole to realize futbol is taken over
Nobody watching that garbage
also... i think MLS partnering with apple tv was terrible because no one really has apple tv... they are losing exposure to America by not signing with the regular broadcasting TV channel @cbs @fox @CNBC
