    I've switched to an FM3 to boost my amps (mainly because it has an ungodly and unusable amount of output that makes any amp sound amazing) but pedal-wise, the Savage Drive is probably my favorite. It's so aggressive compared to something like an OD808.

    Well , Beers cold, and the Grill is lit, I must depart. KT have you reviewed the Empress Para EQ? I would love to know your opinions on EQ's. I have always used Parametric over graphic Q's still miss my 1990s Rane Para EQ. What type of Q do you have in your loop??

    • @XChristianNoirX
      @XChristianNoirX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried the Empress, but it doesn't have a high pass (nor low pass) filter. If it did, I'd get one.

    • @MrBassetman
      @MrBassetman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@XChristianNoirX Yeah that is it's handicap., but I get so much more definition, and control of my tone with it over the Tech 21. Its not bad, but......... well I dunno its kind like cutting with a dull knife so to speak. Id imagine, and will try it out with the boosted amp, and see how it goes.

    • @XChristianNoirX
      @XChristianNoirX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrBassetman are you talking about the Tech 21 Q strip? I have that. I haven't used it a whole lot. It has a high pass, but it's fixed to like 40hz or something IIRC. Otherwise I might use it. However, either way, I did find it a little tame in front of the amp.. Haven't tried it in the loop though.

    • @MrBassetman
      @MrBassetman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@XChristianNoirX Never tried it in the front, Its just, to quote my daughter MEH! Empress blows it away, Empress is very well made gear, no REGERTS :P

    • @XChristianNoirX
      @XChristianNoirX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrBassetman I really think it's application. I think the Q strip might be more useful for acoustic instruments or bass, going direct into full range speakers. It's based off of a vintage mixing console EQ, which typically doesn't go into a limited range guitar speaker. It even has an XLR DI out.
      For it to sound good with guitar, perhaps it would have to be placed after the guitar cab.. More precisely, after the mic, which is kind of pointless outside of digital land and it being a pedal.
      The Empress on the other hand was designed for guitar.
      BTW, Wampler has a parametric EQ too, but you can't adjust the width, and still no HPF. :/ it seems the Empress probably beats that one too.
      Honestly, all I need is a HPF at 105 HZ and another control for just 1.4k, both matching the stock curves of the Kemper's parametric EQ. This is for before an amp though. It would cut the exact amount of mud I need to get rid of and the 1.4k would give me control over my pick attack. In the loop, I'd just need one knob centered at 255hz, or a multiband compressor that could act like the Andy Sneap compression trick to control palm mutes.. But no one makes a compressor like this either. In fact, Andy Sneap could start his own pedal company just on such a device, or get someone else to manufacture it and slap his name on it. Andy Sneap's Palm Mute Controler. 🌴 🔕 🎮 ~ 😂
      Just one big knob to set the threshold.. Or I guess it could be auto too, if BOSS made it.

      Marshall

    • @killertone
      @killertone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is almost always the case. Much less low mid and bass content makes it sound clearer. recto is big and beefy. Needs a little more EQ work to sit in a mix by itself.

    • @MrBassetman
      @MrBassetman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metal_helm You are not in the minority at all, I no longer own any Marshall's, and would like to get an old one to have modded up. I still like my East Coast Thrash, Like Overkill, the Merritt Gant, Rob Cannavino days to be specific. I believe those guys used Carvins, and Im not sure of the model. I think that Marshall with this boost pedal is PERFECT for achieving, Old Skool tones, with one exception..... Old Skool tones in the high gain realm never got anywhere near the clarity and definition that our beloved genre enjoys today at such an affordable cost, and that's just my opinion, but Ive been tone surfing for 35 years. THIS is the Golden Era of Metal tones!! Thats a fact, not an opinion :P TH-cam, and experts willing to share their knowledge..............Priceless!!!!

    • @metal_helm
      @metal_helm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrBassetman you are totally right! I've been chasing Bobby Gustafson's tone since 89', and now that I've gotten closer to it, I don't really want it anymore. I'd rather have Gary Holt's plus a combination of my own. But whether it be killertonetexas, or Ola Englund, you're right, these tones are all incredible that are available, it's just trying to put your own spin on it.

    • @MrBassetman
      @MrBassetman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metal_helm Dude I was chasing that SkullkCrusher tone, but tighter. The original recording kinda warbles like a vacuum tube rectifier, and considering the age of that tune, that's probably the case, that and angry voice coils. I didn't know the difference until Mesa rectos came on the scene, Oh my what a difference. Then again rectifier circuits modded to replace vacuum tube rectifiers have been around a long while. One thing for sure, we got it good these days!!

    Nevermind the below comment..
    On the V4 (at least) the tight knob reverses direction depending if you have dirt on zero or not.
    th-cam.com/video/F6lqTBA0B70/w-d-xo.html
    This pedal was driving me nuts, but now that I know, I'll mess with it again. It's been sitting under my couch for several months.
    Wrong:
    I forget at which end of the tight control it is.. But someone mentioned that with knob all the way to one end does the opposite of what you would think it does for some reason... I think it's on the V4.. Not sure if the v3 does the same thing.

    • @killertone
      @killertone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All I know is that in this one to Tight to the left is tightest and to the right it is fatter. Interestingly when the tight is all the way right and the Bite is all the way right, it gets very aggressive and not as loose/fat as I would've though. Almost like the two controls cancel each other in a way.

    • @XChristianNoirX
      @XChristianNoirX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@killertone When I got this, I tried it with my Kemper and it sounded really good. Then my EVH Stealth came in and I no longer liked it.. I guess I wasn't keen on these quirks that should have probably been explained beforehand though. 😂
      I'll have to whip it out and try again.

    • @AirisEffects
      @AirisEffects 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The description of the control itself has always been on the website and explains exactly what it does! It has never been reversed for any version so that each iteration is the same function as the last. :)

    • @XChristianNoirX
      @XChristianNoirX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AirisEffects my pedal functions exactly as at the link I provided. At 0 on the dirt knob, the tight knob is reversed. As soon as you add a little dirt, just as shown in the video, then the knob works how you'd expect.
      I think that what I was doing is setting the gain on zero, like I would with a typical overdrive, adjusting that, and then raising the gain. However, since the orientation of the tight knob would flip, it hosed my settings and I had to start over.
      I actually decided I prefer this pedal with some of the gain knob applied, so I'm just going with that from the get-go and everything is gravy. It has a mean charchter.
      Whatever the case, I'm really liking this pedal a lot more now!
