That's really good, love it, the only thing that I would recommend is that your pump not be at the bottom of the pond, but up a bit on bricks or something, just in case there is a leak or a fox pulls the tray over or something unforeseen and then the pump won't completely empty the pond, killing the fish. I keep getting a fox in my garden that is fascinated by the pond pump tube and air stone tubes, he keeps biting them and has completely chewed though the ayirstone tubes twice now, if he wanted he could easily bite though the pond pump tube as well and if my pond pump was on the bottom of the pond it would empty it but so far I've been lucky. In my ponds I have the pumps up on ledges, never on the bottom for this and other similar reasons.
Thank you! Yeah, I did end up taking out that pump when I later added a canister filter as a pre-filter.. and when I did that I made sure the intake didn’t go all the way to the bottom. Luckily I’ve not had any issue with fox’s, but I’m alway on my guard as I’ve got chickens! Thanks for watching! 😊

Raise your pump or put it in an overflow skimmer bucket. If something happens it wont drain the pond.

I think you'd be better sealing the pipe from the pump into the filter inlet to force the water to come up from the bottom of the filter, otherwise its going to take the path of least resistance and possibly just come out the top of the pipe.
Yeah, I did think about sealing it, but decided this way it would make it easier if I wanted to remove the pump and stuff.. I do think the water is going down to the bottom of the filter though, as it doesn’t seem to be coming out anywhere else. I’m building a big version of this in the summer for my new pond, they’ll be a couple of extra feature on it though, and i’m also planning on bringing the water in directly at the bottom, rather than coming in over the top and then down to the bottom, which will defo make sure the water moves though all the gravel! What will you do with the plants in the Winter time.
Its a shame that the filter pipes couldn't have been in copper and nit plastic. But overall great video. Perhaps covering a drain isn't ideal!
I'm covering mine with copper tape. Should give a nice effect and age well.

Great video. The plants that you placed in the pond that were in pots do they just contain gravel?
Yeah, I pretty much plant all my plants in gravel as it forces them to pull there nutrients from the water column and therefore helps to prevent algae. The only exception is Water Lilly’s, as they are such heavy root feeders, I plant them in aquatic compost with aquatic fertiliser balls. 👍

Quick question what if you plug the filter in a non sheltered area and it gets wet will it electrocute the fish?

What type of wood do you use and do you use some kind of weather resistant sealant on the wood to keep from rotting?
I used all pressure treated wood that’s intended for outdoor use, and I then stained it with water based wood stain to give it some extra protection! 😊
Thanks for a great video. Question, is the little aerator on the bottom necessary? I’d think the aeration from the water coming back into the pond from the bog filter would be enough?
Yeah, I think you’re right.. as long as the pond isn’t too overstocked, the amount of aeration produced from the water flowing back into the pond should be plenty!
Hi. I am a new subscriber. This is great! Just what I want to do. I have never had an outdoor pond just large indoor tanks so am looking for inspiration and advice. I have been able to get a new large plastic container which was a commercial wheeled laundry cart. (A gift from a friend). I took off the wheels ( they weren’t bolted through so no holes) and it is perfect for the job and I believe much cheaper than from a pond supplies shop. You can get them online. I love the look of the pond you built but not the plastic pipe that protrudes from the bog filter. Would you be able to wrap it with jute rope or something similar so it blends more with the natural wood material? Look forward to seeing it when it becomes more established. 😁
Hi! The laundry cart sounds like it will make a great pond! I know what you mean about the white pvc piping, it doesn’t look great. I was hoping to swop it out for black piping that I thought would look a bit better, but couldn’t seem to find the right size. I also tried looking for some copper pipe that I could slide over the top, but again couldn’t find the right size. That’s a good idea about wrapping it with rope though! Hi do you not need various sized pebbles in levels in the bog filter? Just curious as ive seen others put various sizes in. Thanks
Ideally yeah, you would have larger pebbles at the bottom working up to smaller ones towards the top. But in a small bog filter like this one, just one size worked fine. I think if I’d used larger stones in this bog filter they would have taken up too much space and made it hard to plant in to.

What would you recommend for heating a 50g outdoor pond for fish?
Hi mate, depends on a couple of things really.. will the pond be insulated reasonably well, and will you be able to put some sort of cover/ lid on it in the colder months? Also, what temperature do you want to keep it at? I heat a couple of ponds using aquarium heaters, but I’m only really using them to stop it from freezing and getting too cold, I’m not actually trying heat it up..
Did I miss something? Is the filtering all done just by the gravel? Beautiful project. Just subscribed.
The gravel and plants should be able to handle all the filtering, but I did later add a pre-filter to take care of the some of the physical debris, which I don’t think was really needed, but thought it would help with polishing the water a little. do you ever need to clean out the bog filter? If so, how?
Hi there, no I’ve never cleaned it out since setting it up over 2 years ago, and its still running well. I did add a pre-filter to it though which stops most of the solids from ever making it to the bog filter, so I think that’s probably made a big difference. You can see how I did that using a canister filter in this video:

Can you put fishes immediately or do you have to wait?
I’d probably give it a couple of weeks.. that will give the plants a little bit of time to settle in to the point that they can use up the waste produced from the fish. Also, it’s always good to start with just a couple of small fish and slowly build up the numbers. That will give the ecosystem time to adjust the new waste load. 😊👍

What hose did you use with the pump, does it come with the pump or do you need to buy it separately?
Can’t remember now what size hose I used… it would have been either 13mm or 20mm though, both of which will fit with the pond pump I used in this video (which was the ‘Blagdon mini pond 700’. It didn’t come with it though, I had to buy it separately. 👍😊

What is your climate like in the winter? I see you insulated but do you get any freezing weather? I'm thinking of doing something similar but I don't want to have to bring fish in for the winter. Thanks and great video :)
Hi mate, thanks very much! Yeah, temps defo drop below freezing here. Our winters do vary a fair bit though, some years fairly mild with no snow at all, some years freezing temps and lots of snow. I don’t plan on bringing my fish in for winter, goldfish should be alright as long as the pond doesn’t freeze completely solid, and you make sure there is a hole in the ice somewhere for oxygen exchange. An Air stone can be used to achieve this. My next video is actually going to be on my winter pond preparation! Thanks for watching! 😊
What size pump did you use? I wondering if a too large pump is used the water might flow out of the upright inlet pipe rather than flowing to the bottom. Am I right? Thank you.
I used a 700 LPH/ 180 GPH pump. I did have a flow valve on hand to use if I needed, but as it turned out the size pump I used produced just the right amount of flow. I think you’re right though, if the pump was too large, the water may well flow out of the upright inlet pipe. Thanks for watching! 👍😀
Very nice. The "pond weed", as you called it, is called Elodea I believe. Not sure if I spelled that right or not. It certainly grows like a weed though. Question: you washed all the soil off the plants in the bog filter because you said you wanted the plants to pull all of their nutrients from the water but, there is some form of bioload, there won't be any nutrients will there? So Theon's part of my question would be: Did you add any form of fertiliser to give the plants something to go on with?
Thank you! Yeah, because I did wait so long before adding fish I did end up adding a small amount of fertiliser just to keep the plants going until I added the fish!
All a learning curve for me. I've had aquariums in the past but never an outdoor pond and I'm in a rental so I can't go with an in ground pond. I plan to build something about 2000 litres in size and MAYBE put glass in the front too. So I've been madly watching pond build videos. 😂

how do you clean out the bog filter
I don’t really.. but I have got a pre-filter on this now, that stops a lot of the waste getting into the filter in the first place. Other than that I just rely on the bacteria’s in the filter breaking down the waste to the point where the plants use it. It’s been running that way for around 18months now and seems to be fine. This does rely on keeping the stocking level in the pond quite low though. That said I am thinking at some point I will upgrade it to include a clean out valve like I did in my DIY Patio Pond bog filter! 😊

Hi! It’s 32mm pvc pipe and 32mm tank connectors. Are you in the UK? If so, you can get all the bits you need from Homebase or Wickes. I’d imagine B&Q also has them. 👍

Hi there! It’s PIR Insulation Board. Really easy to use and cut to size, and does a great job at insulating, which should come in handy come the winter! Thanks for watching! 😊

Will the plants survive the winner.
Hi Jim, the plants will all survive the winter. Some are evergreen and will look good all year round, and some will die off and grow back the following Spring. The Barred Horsetail is pretty much evergreen, and will look good all year round, I will sometimes give it a bit of a trim at the end of the season though. The watercress is also evergreen and will often continue to grow right through the winter (although growth rate does slow down). The iris will die off and will need cutting right down to ground level, but will come back the following Spring. The pond weed will survive through the winter and continue to grow throughout. The Water Hawthorn and the Water Lilly will also die off at the end of the season, so will need the dead leaves removing, but again should return the following Spring. It is also a good idea to push some fertiliser balls into the Lilly container when it starts to grow again the following season. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching! 🌿

Hi mate, yeah if you’ve got some space at the bottom of the filter to create a void space and a drain outlet, I would definitely put one in. I didn’t really have the space for one on this filter, but when I rebuild my big pond I’ll definitely be putting in a drain outlet on the bog filter for that! Good luck with your build bro!!! 💪
@@GingerFishyOfficial Thank you for your reply. I'm deciding between a cheap waterfall filter or a proper bog filter with a couple of outlets made from a planter. Think I'll go for the gravel filled planter, small void in the bottom for a drain. Its only a small raised pond, but would like clear water. As the pond is quite a way from the house it'll be a solar pump. So need to look into one way valves or breathers to stop the filter draining back into the pond when the pump stops. Love your videos, certainly inspired me. Thank you.

Can these ponds support fish in the winter being insulated?
Hi mate, I think so… although it may depend on where in the world you are. I’m planning on making a polycarbonate lid with some bubble wrap attached to it for over the winter. Hoping not to have to heat it!

But I would love to keep an above ground pond like yours. I live in the Midwest USA. Our winters get cold and summers get hot.
Yeah, your weather sounds little more extreme than ours, most years we don’t really even get snow. Last year I had a similar setup, and I put a 300watt heater in, and then connected that to an inkbird temperature controller that I set to 10 degrees c (50 degrees f), and that worked really well. Hoping to avoid that this year though. Will be interesting to see how well the insulation helps with keeping the temperature from dropping too far. Hi mate, I’ve not had any issues so far, the bigger rocks help to stop too much getting in there and clogging them up. The only issue I may have is if the plants get too out of control and the roots get in there and clog them up. But hopefully if I keep on top of pulling out excess plant growth, I should be alright. Brilliant - really helpful videos! I've basically followed your example, just finishing off the bog filter today hopefully. When you filled up the tank - did you put the blank cap in place? I siliconed mine in place, front and back, so I could get a load more water in - seemed more beneficial than having an overflow 3 inches down the tank wall.

Very nice appearance. Is there any difference to using (in a smaller water feature) small pumice, or even, marbles? For the difference in appearance? Thinking about this though; would small pumice work better than pea gravel, by creating more surface area within the same filter volume?🤔
Will you/have you, added plants to the top of your filter? How often do you clean out this type of filter box?
Hi Leo, I’ve never tried it with pumice or marbles before, but I think it would work ok. Not too sure how plants would grow in marbles though. But you could definitely try it! And I think you are right that pumice would work well due to the increased surface area. I have indeed added a few different plant to my filter and they seem to be growing well. My plan is to just clean it out once a year, at the beginning of each Spring, at which time I will pull out all the plants as by that time they will have grown far too big, and then replant a few of them back ready for the season ahead. I don’t plan on ever emptying the gravel, unless I have a problem. I’ve had similar filter running on another pond that I had running for over 2 years, and the only maintenance I did in that time was to trim the plants every now and then.
