Well said. This is why I've made such a big deal about companies that do customer service right. This is ridiculous. It should have never left the factory looking like that It should have been in a second's bin. And the fact that someone actually laid hands on that and felt like it was okay to send that to somebody who paid $80 for it is ridiculous.
And you are spot on with the rough Rider thing.
Thanks for letting us hear about it. I've got one out to another company right now for warranty service and I hope it's way better than this.

I agree 100% with your price/value comparison between Case & Rough Ryder. Even more important to me is the way SMKW takes care of the customer. I also have several Case and a whole lot more Rough Ryders. In the last month I had a Rough Ryder break. I emailed pictures to customer service and asked if I could get it replaced. They contacted me the next day to say they were sorry and a replacement was on the way. They even emailed me again to let me know the day it shipped.

I feel Case has stopped trying to improve and got complacent. And when that happens every thing starts going down hill pretty fast. The pride of making the best product you can is no longer there. And when profit is the only motivation, quality is the first to go.

Good you got that off your chest JB! Im' with you a 100% there. I'm fully aware that it's probably different for people born and bred in the US but I'm not, and when I buy a knife I expect it to meet the quality standards given the price point. To me there's junk and 'non-junk' (for lack of a better word) and in both cases I don't really care where it was made. You of all people are surely aware that I love Benchmade... well, as long as they keep producing models I like at a price I can afford and with the quality standards that goes with that price level I actually don't give a hoot where they are made. If Benchmade moved its entire production plant elsewhere I'd feel bad most of all for Zach lol! Same goes for TRM, fully made in the US currently. Would I like TRM knives less if they were made in Taiwan or Bulgaria or wherever? Not in the least, at the most I would expect to be able to get them at a lower price point.

I live about an hour from SMKW & was in their store today buying 3 Rough Ryders. During the 2 hours I was shopping, I passed by the Case display without stopping, knowing my per-knife-budget prevents me from buying Case. More people seemed clustered around the Case area than the RR section, although the RR section was doing a brisk business. I keep hearing TH-camrs complain about Case’s declining quality. I believe this is a growing problem across a broad swath of American businesses, including both manufacturers and service providers. It’s especially egregious when the product or service comes at a more premium price. No company can indefinitely survive poor QC. I think yours was a justifiable rant, Big Red!

I’ve about 15 Case knives, and all but one have been perfect or at least good enough. The one that had a way off centre blade was an easy fix, so I fixed it. I’ve between 30 and 40 RR knives and just 4 that have been poor. Three were the same knife (4” cv toothpick). I broke one trying to fix it. Sending them back should have been the thing to do, but for £12 it just wasn’t worth the bother, and they remain fair representations of the patterns I can’t or won’t buy from better makers (the main reason I buy RRs). They still work as comparators. I still remain wary of buying Case knives unseen though. I used to buy from The Slipjoint Guy, as he would check them before sending them, but his rejection rate meant he decided it wasn’t worth carrying on.

The fact that Case is owned by Zippo and Zippo has excellent customer service and warranty, makes me even more wondering why the standarts at Case are not even remotely up to those of Zippo. If Case really wanted to do right to their customer, they should have replaced it for a good one. If this is what fixing the knife means, boy they're in trouble. Bending the blade and a few bangs on the pivot would be as effective as what they did. Short; i agree with you JB. Oh and i never had a RR in that condition in the first place.

Very disappointing to hear this! That’s brutal. How is nobody at Case paying attention to your series of videos?? There’s not that many TH-camrs making Case videos…they should have someone monitoring TH-cam and they should make things right when there’s an issue. I would love to see Case do the same thing as Grohmann knives does..if they make an imperfect knife, they stamp it with an “S” and sell it for half price. Case will never do that, but they really should. Thanks for the final update JB! Wish it didn’t end this way! Thanks for doing this series. I’m definitely taking a break from Case after seeing this.

"Sad" is a perfect summary of this situation. If I received a knife and box in that condition after sending it off for warranty work...let's just say the words that would come out of my mouth are definitely not TH-cam friendly! Beaides, one can find plenty of American-made Camillus and Schrade knives with excellent carry value for less money than a brand-new Case. After seeing this, it'll be a long time before I purchase another Case...if I buy one at all.
I've never bought a brand-new Victorinox product that had such shoddy workmanship. Recently I've had some experience with their repair department. Perhaps I'll share that in a future video.

I am 100% with you. I have only owned two Case knives and sent one back. I should have sent the other back too. At the pivot I could fit two sheets of paper on one side and three on the other. This is a lower end Sod Buster and the reason I have not purchased another yet. Really makes me sad.

I work at a retail store that sells case knives. I do like them, and own several and love them, but their quality is so hit or miss. Some are perfectly centered. No or very little gapping. Action is good. Etc. Others are not, they have terrible gapping, off centered, the action feels like a wet sponge, lot of side to side play (and up and down for ones that lock). They also ALWAYS come with a heavily burred edge so I usually strop them.
I agree with you. I don't know how so many of those leave the factory like they do.

Hey Big Red, all points well taken. We always strive for perfection, even as simple as buying cake mix at the grocery store. Do we buy the box that is smashed? No, we grab the one next to it. As far as collecting, how many times have we seen on antiques road show, box dented up? Decreased value for sure. And on the “Chinese junk” issue, if these folks took everything out of their house that was made in China or anywhere else overseas, their house would be pretty empty. I think Nick Shabazz said it best, quality is about commitment not geography. I’m onboard with your “rant” 100%. You take care sir !

I am not a current collector of case knives but speaking as a general purchaser I've seen the QC on alot of companies trying to rely on their past success to push out bad products. Customer service is only reliable if they fix the products that are broken maybe from shipping or other unforeseen damage. Too many products are making it to shelves that should have never left the manufacturer. This knife is the perfect example of get it out the door to fulfill shipping numbers that have to be shipped instead of going through proper QC. Just my opinion on this frustrating turn of events that many of us are facing. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

Rough Ryder has all but convinced me that the only reason Case knives cost more than $30 is for that little "USA" tang stamp. I live in America and I appreciate US-made products, but I won't pay extra for an inferior knife just because it was made here.

You are 100% correct in your thoughts on this. I've had the same issue with Benchmade, sent a knife back and they did a piss poor job and sent it back to me sub par. You would think if they are receiving something from an upset customer they would have multiple QC steps before it's sent back out. And the piss poor shipping, i'd be pissed. I had a jackass ship me a Schatt & Morgan like that and the knife was out of the box in the loose envelope, i definitely dinged him on his Ebay review for it as well. I'd never ship something like that. Love your content!!

Caviat emptor... Latin for buyer beware. I have had good and bad luck with Case xx. I do agree with your comment that if someone sends a knife back for warranty work they should go the extra mile to make it better than the customers expectation. I feel like the tolerances in their quality control department have become way too accepting of substandard quality in favor of mass production and price control. The more time and effort put into an heirloom quality piece drives the price up. The Select and Tony Bose special limited editions are the only lines that they have now that carry the quality you could expect from a Case xx knife built 50 years ago when they still took pride in everything that carried the Case XX brand. I still buy and collect Case XX knives but I am extremely selective and buy much less from them than in the past. I also have greatly diminished my expectations with them. Conversely, I feel like RR exceeds my expectations most of the time. Thanks for the series, sorry about your experience but thanks for sharing.

People shouldn't have to see a knife in person to trust it will be of good quality. I agree 100% with your rant. In my collection, I have a number of Case knives. There are some definite winners, a couple of which I rank very highly, but there are also quite a few with issues that are disappointing. I own more GECs than any other brand, and that's where my money goes when I can get one. I'm also happy with the Boker slip joints I've bought. I'll still buy the occasional Case, but it's going to be pretty rare.
More than anything, we need another US solid company making quality slip joints. That would ease the crazy GEC drops some, and maybe make Case worry enough to put their game if they started losing business.

This has been an interesting series. While watching this final rant, I pulled out the trapper I have in my pocket right now. It's a Ridge Runner Cinder Cone model from BudK, and is definitely cheap Chinese junk. It has lesser materials, and it even feels cheap in the hand. It still meets the demands I'm putting on it today, so that makes it good enough AFAIC.
And yet . . . it has almost no gapping issues. The fit and finish is better on this discount blade than on your factory repaired Case. That's definitely disturbing.

I absolutely agree 100% with the point you made in Case verses Rough Ryder. I agree the RRR should be held to another standard. There are probably a handful of people I would trust buying a Case from without it being in hand and you are one because if I said I missed whatever in picture can I return it I know it wouldn't be an issue. I would have still been more upset with Case than you were in this rant. I am understanding why their brick and mortar stores are closed. You are totally correct on price of USA made items because the workers are paid more and probably have benefits. Go out on the Blade Show West floor and enjoy seeing the people and the knives.

This pisses people off, me too.
But they are not the only ones that have qc isues.
I wil give two examples, first Hinderer, i got my xm 24 during the big Hinderer drought a few years back, those things are realy expensive in Holland on a good day let alone when you can hardly get them, i payed 1200 euro's for it and it came with the ,,word" HINDC ingraved on the spring side instead of Hinderer, and it was about as sharp as a barn.
Example two, my S90v cf Spyderco shaman, that one came with an incredible un even primary grind( you have to see it, it's redicules).
Both cases realy pissed me off, they both were expensive knives and both of them had to be send of half way around the world for warranty work.
And i have to say i am carefull buying expensive Spiderco's again and Hinderer is off the table permanently for me.

I have been able to purchase only one reserve so far, the Highlander, but I love it!! Great quality. Plus most Case collectors or dealers I've met, are snobs & lie to you & want to trick you about the value! Maybe cuz I'm a woman, but I'm not stupid!! As they are such a Tradition as people's father had Case knives such as mine and my grandfather's had them I have some very old ones that where handed down from generation to generation. So I think Case is still living on there name. But I definitely agree dollar for dollar the RR is a better value for sure.

I feel this way about cheaper companies and I can chalk it up as bad business. But this is embarrassing for them and for us. They’re not this bad, unless they keep pulling stuff like this. The community isn’t down to run around in circles to get the knife to sub par standard imho. At least they tried. But they could have made it “right,” imho. They have the money to , and the machining facilities for days. So what the heck ? That’s like me, as a realtor, saying I can’t do certain parts of the purchasing process - well then I would fix it or find someone who can and make the client happy, or you may run out of clients someday , and fast. I hope they get their shit together here. This rralllllly gives rough Ryder a leg up in the community - now all they have to do is to continue to be good, and then just be better than bad in the quality service dept, but that doesn’t push them competitively , to give us a good warranty service either (don’t get any bad ideas smkw! We want good warranty service and QC lol).

I think this speaks to a couple of things. The knife should have been caught before it got out of the factory. Ok, it’s a Friday at 16:30 knife and the worker didn’t care. Spot check QC misses it, ok. But to go back to warranty and then they send it back dirty in a crushed box and tell you thanks for your business? Are you expecting return customers with a policy like that? Country of origin comes into play because of a small group of people that are politically motivated to hate China and by extension anything from there. The knives I have from RR are really good. I have been lucky with Case. I am happy with all of mine. But if in the future I get a bad Case I am not sure I will send it in for service. I hope Case sees this and takes corrective action. I expect better of them for the price they charge and their reputation. Thank you for sharing your experience, I am sorry that this happened to you but I am glad you have the platform to shine the light on this.

    I second that brother...
For me, CASE is a classic American 🇺🇸 cultery manufacturer, who has produced some wonderful knifes, over the years, for sure...
However, 'your only as good as your last knife' - that you produce and put out to sell to the public and if there is an issue or a few - then you do your best to get it sorted, as reputation and a company's good character is everything in the industry and our community.
It saddens me, to think that TB would be turning in his grave, if he knew of the repair 🔪 you mentioned and the poor after sales service you went through - it does not do them any favours.
Based on this and what I have seen, I am out and shall not be buying any new ones in the future, apart from a select few on the secondhand market... unless they 'up their game' significantly with consistent standards & service... 🙏

I'd have to agree with you Red. Rough Rider knives have better fit and finish than that Case ruslock does even after the warranty work was done on it. And at a fraction of the price of Case knives. It is also safe to say that Rough Ryder have more design variations even without adding the reserve line than Case does.
Some may knock Rough Ryder for being made in China but, some very well known brands have their production in China as well for example; CRKT, Ganzo, Kershaw, Kansept, Civivi, WE knife and, even Buck knives produce some of their blades in China to name just a few.

Starting with the knife being in horrible condition before it was shipped is where I would have begun with them. If you bought it new from a retailer they should have exchanged it, if it was an ebay guy you took a chance and lost. Case when presented with your return should then have done that, but they didn't. They are at fault for the manufacture, distribtion, and sale of this knife and should simply replace it. I would talk to them again and see if they will do so.
We will never see a USA made quality knife for $15.00 because NO ONE in the USA will work for $10.00/day and a handful of rice once a week...NO ONE.

At the end of the day I base my opinion of a company over multiple experiences. I’d hate to be judged on one bone headed move because I’ve made so many of them.

Agreed JB !! We want to see Case and other USA made knife companies prosper . And you almost hate to call them out . But like I’ve said before , the last 3 case knives I’ve had in hand were poorly made . I have even made comment to Maury Ford about this and he said he will pass it along . Guess he forgot . Of course made In the USA is gonna cost more . The materials here can’t be sourced as cheap and we pay employees that make the knives here a better wage . The cost of operating a medium to large scale business in the US is staggering . So it’s not just the made in the USA stamp that drives the price up . So I won’t complain or bypass something US made because it can be found cheaper in China . But in the same breath , the US companies need to realize that their customers take pride in buying US and they need to show the same pride on the manufacturing side . We’ve seen it with Case and Gerber lately .. I hope this is a rut that they can see their way out of and I say just try to buy these knives at a dealer for now so you can see the actual knife before you buy it . Take care JB

You have made some very good points however as much as i like rough ryders, overall they are still not as good as case.the reserves are very close but they also cost the same.I wish case were more like gec but thats not gona happen and maybe thats a good thing because atleast you can buy case with minimum effort.

If you bought your knife at smnkw they would have sent you a new case also, so your the 2nd 3rd or how ever many were in front of you, have never had a problem have over 200 case buy them from a variety of case dealers all the same problem when you buy it new send it back they send you another one easy peavey, you were not fair
