My mums family lived in Ireland in the 1960s (after moving from Nova Scotia) and since there was no such thing as ice hockey her older brothers joined their local village hurling team as an alternative. My uncle told me he would have quit because it was just TOO VIOLENT EVEN BY HOCKEY STANDARDS but didn't want to be seen as a pussy so he toughed it out. They still have old 60s era hurling sticks in their basement from those days. I can't even imagine how crazy hurling would have been by 1960s standards considering ice hockey back then was a free pass to commit jailable assault on people LOL.
Hah, crazy story. I'm actually from Nova Scotia, and my family originated from Ireland - in the mid 1700s. I started watching a bit of Hurling from time to time, because of ice hockey. From what I understand, Ice hockey originated from the game of Hurling, it was called ice hurling in the beginning. I wish the Irish immigrants who came here over the years would've kept the tradition alive because honestly, hurling is an incredible game. The level of hand/eye coordination, cardio, physical fitness and overall toughness you have to develop to become a top level player is immense. We have lacrosse here but it doesn't really compare to this, a lot more fluidity in the play of the ball as well as the skill required to pass, bounce it, shoot. Hope to one day come to Ireland and watch a club or GAA match.
Don't see this anymore, today's players are more like soccer players soft as warm butter, falling down arms flaying all over the place like they'd been shot, when was the last tlme a hurley was broken in a game
