I've been really wanting to delve more into jazz and this really helped me get a bit more familiarized with some of the chords and how to incorporate them. Your videos really are some of the best out there for lessons/comparisons. Never stop my man.

Yeah, it's good somebody ''in the know'' to show us mere mortals, who didn't study music theory in some fancy place, an easy path to this ''high end'' form of music.

Me: Hey this sounds good (picks up guitar and starts to play along)
The moment I see a barre chord
    Me: Nope.

Dont overreact, I used to scare barres but if you study enough its alright

Honestly, all this video does is make me feel like I am learning the 12 bar blues again, which is hard for a beginner!

    • @shitmandood
      @shitmandood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Really? It should be easier. The very basic Freddie Greene 12-bar blues is only 3 chords!

That's odd since Blue Bossa is...a Bossa :DDDDD

    Thanks so much Darrell !
I'm 60 and so over power chords and shredding. Always wanted to get an arch top and play those beautiful chord progressions but was always chasing that extra bit of arpegio speed and stuff. This is like being shown the guitar again for the 1st time !
Keep sharing the joy of music mate. Cheers and good luck for new year for you and yours !

This is the perfect site for my level and interests in music. I have wanted to add to what I already know. I appreciate that not everybody is in to jazz, or appreciates the sounds and differences in sound that these chord embellishments produce, but for me, this is next level playing.

Great tutorial. Thanks again, Darrell. Blue Bossa was my favorite because it started out in the minor, but then brought you through the sad quality to the happy major. Tension and release: that's my favorite music. And the great composers always deliver you from the stress in the sound. And those who don't just leave you hangin'.

I always wondered how to create those "exotic" chords on the guitar... The contortions you have to perform with your fingers to do these chords... Wow. Thanks you opened my eyes to the possibilities there. I'll bookmark this for future reference. I've done some guitar music on my channel too (in the playlist: "Gavin Brown covers Mix", but it is a lot different to this.

I have played guitar for years, folk/pop style, and never tried this kind of guitar because I thought the same thing.
But I have always most enjoyed finger style arpeggios etc and have caught an absolute passion for the fingerstyle jazz and so I am going to try! Come what may, it is bringing me joy in difficult times.
Thank you so much for your videos! Cheers all

Darrell, I have to say how happy and impressed I am by your channel and videos, and by this one particularly. I have been plunking around for about 45 years (I'm 57) I am self-taught and over the years have become mostly a fingerstyle player. I never put the effort into learning more challenging styles (jazz) and theory and the fret board. Lately I have been doing so, and with just a little effort it is amazing how what used to seem mysterious and unattainable is actually within my grasp IF I JUST THINK, PRACTICE, AND PUT EFFORT INTO IT. Jazz people so often feel superior and revel in the complexities and theory, making those of us who have not learned that stuff feel inferior at times. This video is EXACTLY what I needed at this point. A fantastic foundation from which to learn more. Thank you very much.

I recently bought stratocaster and it will be delivered next week.. could you tell me whats the best route to go to learn? do i learn guitar basics , basic chords and notes and then pursue the Jazz guitar style? i'm probably not using the right words , or asking the right questions but any help and input would be great! thank you!

You should find a teacher if you can, but if you can’t, you can find a wide variety of courses to learn online that cover a lot. You should start with technique and open chords, then you can develop into more complex styles and chords, according to your taste in music.

All blues by Miles Davis is just a 12 bar blues in 6/8. Straight no chaser by Thelonius Monk is also a 12 bar blues. Blue train by John Coltrane is the 12 bar blues also but it’s minor blues.

Would've been nice if you went through melodies briefly as well but otherwise nice lesson. Great tunes, hopefully people go listen to them.

In Jazz you don't usually think of scales. You think of arpeggios and phrases. I mean you can use whatever scale that goes with the key but the problem in jazz is that your normal pentatonic or major scales won't really work all the time when the chord changes come so you should familiarize yourself with the different arpeggios and integrate it with the next chord

You can start with the notes in the chords and learn basic scales (modes)and arpeggios, and a little bit of basic theory will really help out
