More than 12 years later I still get goosebumps watching this, the most tense game I have ever seen. As a saints fan I still hate that relayed the match rather than just add extra time like every other sport.
As a pies fan I'm so fuckin happy there was no extra time. I have no doubt the saints would've steamrolled us. It was their day. Not many teams get a second chance, I knew we wouldn't lose the next week.
After rewatching this, I am so glad they've gotten rid of the replay. That was so shattering for everyone on the field, in the sheds and even us watching at home, including neutrals like me.
I don't care whether there was no winner or whether the AFL wants more money; the point is this was an absolute EPIC encounter and has already gone down in history as one of the greatest Grand Finals of all time, regardless of the result. Both teams played superbly until they had absolutely nothing left in the tank. Personally I can't wait for the replay... whoever can play well following a Herculean effort like yesterday will truly deserve to be Premiers.

You don't feel like you've lost but you don't feel like you've won either. If they had left the 2010 grand final as a draw and given both teams a cup it would've felt like a hollow victory.

not denying either team's talent or anything but come on, that is bullshit, why wouldn't you have overtime, it quicker, less expensive and everyone gets what they want which is to get the fucking game over and done with, not drag out another agonising week.
But then again a drawn Grand Final doesn't come around too often. A grand final should be won over 4 Quarters only....not in extra time. I'm happy sticking with the old rule and having a replay.

Eerily similar to the previous years granny, the Saints are like cursed or something. 1 Premiership in 1966 against the Pies by a remarkably similar margin in 119 years in the VFL/AFL. 1 from 6 in GFs I think?
If dawes had of kicked it into the goal square when Cloke was asking for it. Cloke, being the best contested mark in the AFL, would of been able to register a score at least, and we would of won.
Why does the culture of the game need to change? Yes a draw is not a loss but it isn't a win either. I don't have a problem with draws during the home and away season as it can make the ladder more interesting. But for grand finals there can only be one winner. That's what makes winning a premiership so great, knowing that your team is the last team standing. That premiership belongs to your club and no one can ever take that away from you.
I'm a Collingwood fan and I agree. 10 minutes each way, but game ends if one team scores 15 points or more... if neither has15 after two periods, it's the team ahead (2.2.14 beats 1.5.11 after two periods)... if tied after two periods, another 10 minute period until a team has 15 points or more. In most cases, the game should end in the first extra time period. This should be for all finals. I still think we should have draws for the minor round.
At 4:52 Montagna put a superb shepherd on Maxwell that put Hayes through on goal. Instead of taking a couple of strides to steady and take his shot, Hayes threw it on the boot and it bounces through for a behind. Costly.

But when you go back and watch it closely the saints hit the lead with 7 minutes on the clock still, and then didnt score again until the famous point that leveled it. In the mean time the pies were doing nearly all the attacking, scored a behind, then the cloke goal, the dawes shot dropped short, and the sidebottom snap was unlucky not to score a point. It felt like the saints were fast finishing because in the last 2 minutes they were desperately trying to attack, but the pies went defensive to try to hold on to the lead.

I consider it analogous to horse racing whereby if two horses cross the line at exactly the same time as verified by a photo finish, the race is termed a "Dead Heat" and BOTH horses WIN. I believe this should be the ultimate outcome when Australian Rules matches are drawn. However, I do understand your sentiments.
What the hell are you talking about? Neither team won the grand final. Winning means you scored more points than the other team. I'm a Collingwood supporter who was at the game and when the final siren went it certainly didn't feel like a win. It was a weird eerie sort of feeling. It felt more like a loss. Leaving it as a draw and giving both teams a cup would have been anti-climatic. As Maxwell said both teams come for a win or a loss. That's what they expect to leave with.
@BrotherTree1 they didnt choke. st kilda just played an amazing second half. it deserved to be a draw, one of the best games in AFL history. there was no choking, just 2 teams on par with each other. this is the first time st kilda had a full team, hence why collingwood beat them comfortably all year
@GollyVella I was sitting behind it. A few meters away. And I thought he had it all the way, johnson ran in an ark and gave Milne space. But the ball wouldn't have bounced like that a million times over. It was just a freak cutting bounce and theres no way Milne could have gotten to it.

The result of a DRAW should have still stood. They BOTH WON. There should not have been a replay game. They BOTH should have received a trophy and a flag each. Replaying drawn grand finals is stupid. A draw is an acceptable result and should have stayed a draw as a testament to the brilliance of both teams and the fact that they were both such good teams that they both needed to be credited as the premier teams of that particular year.

I can't remember a comeback like this being common in ANY sport. However, NO OVERTIME PERIOD for a Draw?! Instead WAIT? REMATCH?? That's just BULLSHIT! Unfair to fans AND players! Change the fucking rules! I watched this LONG past midnight almost until 4 AM when I had to work later and was PISSED not to see a WINNER emerge.

George Dawson Over the span of 100+ years we've had 3 drawn grand finals. It doesn't happen enough to warrant a change imo.

If the AFL had extra time at the end of the draw I think St Kilda would've just been able to run over the top of Collingwood
