It's actually not that hard, probably the biggest difference is you build a maching solution around the job rather than building the job around a machining solution. Now that sounds like a silly disinction but it really is the basic 'trick' they had. Instead of going how do we make this with our lathe of X size they went lets make take the component parts that we need for a lathe and put them around the work piece as needed. Makes for some very fun photos of workshops with just the most crazy set ups to machine things.
Also life was cheap and wages were nothing so you could afford to whack or injure a few guys in the process and pay the rest not great money. Always helps. Capitalism lol

For those who could not understand the name of the engine, it's "Sir William Prescott."
"The ‘Sir William Prescott’ and ‘Lady Bessie Prescott’ engines are inverted marine-type triple-expansion engines. They were built by Worthington Simpson in Newark-on-Trent and named after the Chairman of the Metropolitan Water Board and his wife. The engines were installed to each pump 12 to 19 million gallons of drinking water per day to reservoirs in North London for the supply of fresh water to The City, Central, East and West London.
The triple-expansion engines stand 62 feet tall and weigh 800 tons. They have a top speed of 25.4 revolutions per minute and generate 1008 water horsepower. Each engine has three double-acting cylinders known as the high, intermediate and low-pressure cylinders. Each measures 29, 54 and 86 inches, respectively. In service days, steam entered the high-pressure cylinder at 200 pounds per square inch. The pressure has been reduced to 60 psi for operation in preservation. The remaining two cylinders reuse the steam before being exhausted into a separate condenser which produces a vacuum. A bank of Coal Fired Boilers in an adjacent boiler house originally produced the steam. Steam is now generated by a small gas-fired boiler.
The crank webs are set 120 degrees apart, providing smooth, balanced operation to the engine motion and a steady discharge from the pumps into the water mains. There is no point in the engines’ rotation where no pump delivers water.
The triple-expansion engines were commissioned in 1929 by the Minister of Health, Arthur Greenwood and ceased operating in 1980 when Kempton Park became an electric pumping station.
The ‘Sir William Prescott’ (No. 6) & the Lady Bessie Prescott (No.7) triple-expansion engines are mirror images of one another."

Or if you plug that into a calculator. 2501149.606 lbs.ft. AKA *2.5 million* ft.lbs, or *3.4 million* Nm of torque!

Also, quick fun fact, the engines are still standing on the seafloor over 110 years later, meaning the bedplates (the piece that holds the engines up) of titanic are still operating the way they were intended after a violent sinking and 100+ years of deterioration

In Derbyshire, the Leawood pumping engine pumps 4 tons of water every stroke (7 strokes per minute), and it's big, but much smaller than the Kempton Park engine. (The Leawood engine is also the oldest non rotating engine in the world still working on it's original site. (It doesn't have a crankshaft.)). That's a rate of 840 tons of water per hour, or 20140 gallons in 24 hours.

And that would be assuming peak power is at maximum RPM. At rest, or at a lower RPM it would be a lot higher.

Triple expansion steam engines were quite common. The SS Delphine, The Dodge family 257' steam powered yacht has 2 quadruple expansion engines. The yacht built around 1920 still has the original working steam engines. It has been available for charter in Europe for many years. The quadruple expansion engines were designed by one of the Dodge brothers. The boat was surveyed for a Diesel upgrade some years ago but I don't know if it happened. While Diesels are
more efficient they are noisier. The relative silence of steam is one of the characteristics that make this vessel unique. Check it out on the web.

Interesting thing about steam engines: They develop maximum torque at zero revs, so there's not much point revving them high.

This is why steam powered vehicles don't need a clutch to disengage the drive when the vehicle stops, unlike an internal combustion engine.

Partly, a lot of skilled blueing & scraping by hand, involving hours of work to get all the bearings to fit, and much skilled work to prepare the foundations and seat the engine frame accurately on its base, and to fit all the other components together into one whole machine.
