A very fun Go-Go reaction 🥳 🎉🎊! I 👁👁 see that you have reacted to George Michael of Wham! before: Careless Whisper, One More Try, If I Told You That w/ Whitney Houston and Freedom '90. Wake Up Before You Go-Go was released as the lead single from Wham's 1984 album: Make It Big. It was written and produced by George Michael. The song reached #1 on the Cash Box 100, #1 on the Hot 100, #4 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #27 on the Dance Club chart. The song also reached #1 in other countries including: Canada, Europe, Ireland, Australia, Belgium, Iceland, UK, Norway, Sweden and Netherlands. The single was certified Platinum with sales of two million copies in the US. The song was ranked number 28 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s.
The music video was directed by Andy Morahan. It showcases the band performing for an audience of mostly teenagers at Brixton Academy in South London. The band was wearing Katharine Hamnett t-shirt designs that said "CHOOSE LIFE" which started a mainstream Pop culture trend at the time.
The song opens with four repetitions of the word "jitterbug", with finger snaps in between. The Jitterbug was a popular dance in the 1930s; combined with the finger snaps and lyrics that harken back to a more innocent time, it helps give the song a retro feel. Another throwback is the line: "You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day", which refers to the singer-actress who was popular in the '40s and '50s.
Group member Andrew Ridgeley lived at home with his parents even after Wham! made it big, which isn't as lame as it sounds: they were on the road all the time, so it was easier than maintaining his own empty household (he and George Michael used a room in the house to make their demos). One day, Ridgeley needed a wake-up call, so he left a note for him mum on his door. He wrote, "Wake me up up", and realizing he duplicated a word, finished the sentence with "before you go go".
George Michael got a kick out of it and decided to use it as a song title. George Michael put together a song called "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go", and it became Wham!'s first American hit.
A "go-go" is a dance club, and dancing is the theme of this song, which tells the story of a guy who is head over heels for his girl, and bummed when he finds out she went dancing while he slept. He asks that in the future, she wake him up before she goes.
This isn't the first "Go-Go" hit song. Smokey Robinson's group: The Miracles, scored in 1965 with their song: "Going To A Go-Go". Dobie Gray had a minor hit that same year with his song: "See You At The Go-Go", and Lee Dorsey charted in 1967 with his song: "Go-Go Girl". Around the time of this song's release, the all-girl American Rock band: "The Go-Go's", were very popular.
"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" was used in a 2023 Volkswagen commercial to promote their sit-to-start feature. A dad keeps getting in and out of the car, and every time he does, the song starts over with "jitterbug", delighting his daughter every time.
Films to feature the song include 📽: The Wedding Singer (1998), Charlie's Angels (2000), Zoolander (2001), Zoolander 2 (2016), Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (2006), Heartbreaker (2010), Happy Feet 2 (2011) and Sausage Party (2016).
Television shows to feature the song include 📺: The Fall Guy ("Spring Break" - 1985), 3rd Rock From The Sun ("The Dicks They Are A-Changin'" - 1996), Gilmore Girls ("Dead Uncles And Vegetables" - 2002), The X Factor ("Episode #6.24" - 2009, "Episode #7.2" - 2010), Psych ("Who Ya Gonna Call?" - 2006), Glee ("Guilty Pleasures" - 2013) and American Dad! ("The Unincludeds" - 2016).
George Michael & Wham! Info 📰:
George Michael was born on June 25, 1963, East Finchley, London, England. He passed away on December 25, 2016 in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England. Andrew Ridgeley was born on January 26, 1963 in Windlesham, Surrey, England.
Wham! were a Pop duo formed in England in 1981. The duo consisted of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. They became one of the most commercially successful Pop acts of the 1980s, selling more than 30 million certified records worldwide from 1982 to 1986. Wham! released three studio albums (three in North America and Japan, two in all other territories), four compilation albums, four video albums, 12 music videos, 12 singles, two remix albums and two documentary films.
Influenced by Funk and Soul music and presenting themselves as disaffected youth, Wham!'s 1983 debut album: Fantastic, addressed the United Kingdom's unemployment problem and teen angst over adulthood. Their second studio album: Make It Big (1984), was a worldwide Pop smash hit, charting at number one in both the UK and the United States. Associated with the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US, the singles from the album:"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", "Everything She Wants" and "Careless Whisper", all topped the US Billboard Hot 100. In 1985, Wham! made a highly publicized 10-day visit to China, the first ever by a Western Pop group. The event was seen as a major watershed moment in increasing friendly bilateral relations between China and the West.
In 1986, Wham! broke up. George Michael was keen to create music targeted at a more sophisticated adult market rather than the duo's primarily teenage audience. Before going their separate ways, a farewell single: "The Edge Of Heaven", and a greatest-hits album titled: The Final, would be forthcoming, along with a farewell concert entitled The Final. Announcing the breakup, George Michael said: "I think it should be the most amicable split in Pop history".
Andrew Ridgeley moved to Monaco after Wham!'s breakup and tried his hand at Formula Three motor racing. Meeting with little success, Ridgeley moved to Los Angeles to pursue his singing/acting career, the failure of which caused him to return to England in 1990. Regardless, CBS Records, having taken up the option on Wham!'s contract that specified solo albums from George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, released a solo effort from Andrew Ridgeley called: Son Of Albert, in 1990. After poor sales, CBS Records declined the option of a second album.

He is estimated to have sold up to 30 million records with Wham!. His debut solo album Faith has sold more than 25 million copies.
Michael's debut solo album: Faith, was released by Columbia Records in the United States and sibling label Epic Records in the United Kingdom in October 1987. In September 1990, George Michael released his second album: Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, which peaked at number one in the UK, number two in the US, and was certified 4× Platinum by the BPI. The album spawned the hit singles: "Praying For Time", "Waiting For That Day", "Freedom! '90", "Heal The Pain" and "Cowboys And Angels".
In December 1991, George Michael released the single: "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", a duet with Elton John. The song reached number one in the UK and US. In 1992, George Michael recorded the song: "Too Funky", for the charity project Red Hot + Dance. The song reached number four in the UK and number ten in the US. In 1993 George, Michael released his version of the song: "Somebody To Love", which was performed at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert with Queen. It debuted at number one in the UK and was certified Gold.
In early 1996, George Michael released the single: "Jesus To A Child", a UK number-one single. The follow-up single: "Fastlove", also peaked at number one in the UK. Following "Fastlove", the album: Older, was released, in May 1996. Other singles from the album included: "Spinning The Wheel", "Star People '97" and the double A-sides "Older / I Can't Make You Love Me" and "You Have Been Loved / The Strangest Thing '97". All of these reached the UK top three.
George Michael then released his first greatest hits collection: "Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael", in November 1998; it contained the new songs: "Outside" and "As", a duet with Mary J Blige. The album was George Michael's most successful in the UK, reaching number one and it was certified 8× Platinum.
George Michael's fourth solo album: Songs From The Last Century, was released in December 1999 and included cover versions of popular songs.
His next album: Patience, was released in March 2004 and peaked at number one in the UK.

Fun Fact 🕵‍♂: The song: "Wake Up Before You Go-Go", was the first track Wham! recorded for their 1984 album: Make It Big. It was done at Sarm West Studios in London. According to Chris Porter, who engineered the session, they didn't work from a demo recording as was standard protocol. George Michael had the song in his head and it was recorded with a live band.

I liked "Wake Me Up before You Go-Go" by Wham! Will you pllease listen and react to some songs by George Michael, who was the lead singer of the group before going solo? Two of my favorites from his first album are the uptempo "Everything She Wants" and the ballad "Careless Whisper'. Both songs were released in 1984. 🙂
