There is a much better way for explaining this. Pretend you are in a room of 122 people excluding you, now you have a one in three chance of sharing a birthday with another person, because there are exactly as many people as one third the amount of days in a year, which is intuitive and makes sense. Now here's the trick EVERYONE has a one in three chance of sharing a birthday with someone else in this room because of the amount of people, now 99.99997% make more sense in a room of 100 people
Another way to explain it is, if you have 23 people, that's 253 pairs of people to compare against eachother, since it's the chance of any two people sharing a birthday. That's way over half of the total days of the year. It's around the same % of doing something with a 1% chance 100 times

Yeh, make's perfect sense with an ounce of thought. 99.7% chance that 2 will share a birthday in a sample of 100, but that still leaves a 1/50 chance that will be you. Or 2%

For those that are interested, I ran a code 10000 times that ran the experiment with 23 babies and yes, it does come out to around 50%. But what I found more interesting is if we count multiple duplicates that it comes out to around 68%.

The most interesting thing I think this "paradox" shows is that it is not really a paradox but a fallacy, which greatly uses statistics and what we believe is "common knowledge" against us. But not only statistics but phrasing as well. "There is a 50% chance you share a birthday with 23 other people in a group" and "There is a 50% chance 2 people from a group of 23 share the same birthday" are completely different things but can easily interpreted as the same. In this day and age, we should be very cautious not to get manipulated by data and questions, as there is nothing worse than being confidently and irredeemably incorrect.
Fun fact, with a rate of 0.0509%, and a current global population of (uvgs) 7.8bil, that means there ought to be approx. 3.97mil people on earth born on February 29th. which sounds like a lot but out of 7.8BILLION (with a B) people, it's really not.

3:20 is the crucial bit but you suddenly skipped over all the explanations of why the equation should be expressed that way. Why multiply the figures. Why raise the latter figure to a power?
The probability is arguably higher than what you solved for, if we allow cases where we do not "stop at 2", we check further if two other babies have the same birthday in that group as well, and so on. Now if we sum it up we end up at 20 people is on average needed to generate a 50.5% chance of shared birthdays, due to multiples groups at times. There are other cases as well that can further increase such a number, say 3+ share the same birthday as well.
There is probably a guy out there that knows 1,000 different people, but none of his friends share the same birthday as him. Because he has no friends. Poor guy.
I always differentiate probability equations like this by just saying "do we roll the dice once"(like one specific baby here), or" roll the dice many times". It helps get the idea across for me.
I've used this same technique to help a game designer that used multiple dice. Built an Excel sheet showing odds of getting a target number that could be adjusted. Then showed results for all 6 base dice (D4,d6,d8,d10,d12,d20) while rolling 1 through 4 dice.

What you’re describing would make sense in terms of the sex of the child, as they would most likely be referring to male or female, just the two typical sexes. However, given that there are 23 babies and 365 days in a year, it’s no longer simply “either share a birthday or don’t.” The 50% is indicating whether they share the *same* birthday. Cheers!

This will work with a group of 32 babies, with 16 females and 16 males, as well as, in a group of 49 babies, with 43 females and 6 males. Also, I'm fine with being inclusive of all genders, however, as we are talking about babies, there are only 2 possible genders that a baby can be born with.
I went on a trip to Belize a few years ago through a travel program with about 30 other strangers. On one of the last days a guy in the group told me about this theory and how interesting it was. He at that point told me he had asked almost everyone at some point on the trip what their bday was to test the theory and was a little disappointed that there had been no repeating bdays yet. I then asked when his birthday was and what do you know , we were the two people with the same birthday!! He was really excited about that and years later I still think about that moment from time to time , especially around our birthday!

For those that are interested, I ran a code 10000 times that ran the experiment with 23 babies and yes, it does come out to around 50%.

@@Generatrix if you’re in the lower numbers then sure but it’s the same thing really. when you get to large numbers like in the question, like 365!, it would be inefficient to sit there doing the work manually when you can use the ! function to get the answer immediately - for reference 10! gives you 3,628,800, so 365! would be an impossibly large number to work with. It also means you don’t have to write 365x364x363… endlessly to get to 1.

The most interesting thing I think this "paradox" shows is that it is not really a paradox but a fallacy, which greatly uses statistics and what we believe is "common knowledge" against us. But not only statistics but phrasing as well. "There is a 50% chance you share a birthday with 23 other people in a group" and "There is a 50% chance 2 people from a group of 23 share the same birthday" are completely different things but can easily interpreted as the same. In this day and age, we should be very cautious not to get manipulated by data and questions, as there is nothing worse than being confidently and irredeemably incorrect.

The probability is arguably higher than what you solved for, if we allow cases where we do not "stop at 2", we check further if two other babies have the same birthday in that group as well, and so on.
Now if we sum it up we end up at 20 people is on average needed to generate a 50.5% chance of shared birthdays, due to multiples groups at times.
There are other cases as well that can further increase such a number, say 3+ share the same birthday as well.

I always differentiate probability equations like this by just saying "do we roll the dice once"(like one specific baby here), or" roll the dice many times". It helps get the idea across for me.
I've used this same technique to help a game designer that used multiple dice. Built an Excel sheet showing odds of getting a target number that could be adjusted. Then showed results for all 6 base dice (D4,d6,d8,d10,d12,d20) while rolling 1 through 4 dice.
so this is why you should use numbers, letters, capitalization and symbols in your passwords.

What you’re describing would make sense in terms of the sex of the child, as they would most likely be referring to male or female, just the two typical sexes. @@stephenamerak994 Actually it works the same, the probability of at least 1 male and 1 female sharing the same birthday is 50%. This will work with a group of 32 babies, with 16 females and 16 males, as well as, in a group of 49 babies, with 43 females and 6 males.
Also, I'm fine with being inclusive of all genders, however, as we are talking about babies, there are only 2 possible genders that a baby can be born with.

I went on a trip to Belize a few years ago through a travel program with about 30 other strangers. On one of the last days a guy in the group told me about this theory and how interesting it was. He at that point told me he had asked almost everyone at some point on the trip what their bday was to test the theory and was a little disappointed that there had been no repeating bdays yet. I then asked when his birthday was and what do you know , we were the two people with the same birthday!! He was really excited about that and years later I still think about that moment from time to time , especially around our birthday!
