    To add onto the whole Royal Canin having a research department, one of the biggest reasons so many vets recommend it is because it's one of the "big 5" that meet WSAVA guidelines. Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Iams, Purina Pro Plan, and Eukanuba are all WSAVA compliant and vets tend to stick within these brands because they've researched the food extensively, formulated it with nutritionists, done feeding trials, etc. and are therefore seen as some of the safest foods on the market. Obviously, they don't work for every pet because every pet's body is different, but I hate the narrative that it's pushed so heavily because vets somehow benefit from selling them. This is not true. I will say, though, that vets are not always properly trained in nutrition so they know that these 5 main brands can be generally trusted and they can recommend them because they are safe to feed. Not to say that every cat is gonna do well on Iams or every dog is gonna do well on Royal Canin and so on and so forth (my dog didn't do well on Royal but my friend's dog did phenomenal on the same formula.) It all comes down to feeding what works best for your pet.

We’ve been trying so many different foods with no success. I am astounded by the incredible improvement.Hoping that it continues.

    Thank you for this review! I adopted my cat recently and he's been on Royal Canin dry food his whole life. I'm desperately trying to change his diet (by finding foods via your reviews) but he's a Royal Canin-only kibble addict, and it's been slow. He's on a mostly wet food diet now of varying brands, but he'll still act up sometimes and eat two bites!! The kibble had been giving him terrible smelling poop and he'd throw up a lot. With the wet food, he's doing much better even though it's slow progress!

    My late cat grew up with Royal Canin kibbles and wet food before she was rehome with us. I managed to change her kibbles over time but with the wet food, she wasn’t keen on any other brands. I have tried many brands and different selections, she ate minimally. Personally, I would not recommend owners whose cats have not tried this brand to introduce this brand. It’s very hard to try other “better” options after.

    • @boleyn8463

      @@marquisegempup9149 You gotta make sure they are hungry! No cat is gonna try something unfamiliar when their favorite kibble is there in a bowl for them to snack on. Start feeding meals 3 times a day, and then try different flavors and textures. You could also try adding some water to the kibble your cat eats now to get her used to a different texture without the taste changing.

    My Vet prescribed royal canin renal A for my older cat. Said it would be ok for my other cat to eat as well. After 6-7 months on this food my older cat started losing weight and ended up losing TWO of his ten pounds. Vet said it was just age related. Finally he just stopped eating and drinking. And within days my female also stopped eating and she had no health issues. At that point i found an article about other cats suffering the same symptoms on this food so i stopped feeding it and switched to mostly wet food with a different kibble and they both started eating again. It took several months but my older cat gained his weight back and they both returned to health. I would never feed royal canin again!

    But you know what? my cat has a urinary problem, he often gets blockage, but when i switched his food to royal canin Urinary S/O and then now just urinary care, the blockage never returned.
    We as a pet owner, may research thru the internet for the ingredients lists etc, but it is not just about the ingredients, there are scientific formulation in which when these ingredients are combined together they make a a great benefit.

      @laurens422 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just a heads up: Royal Canin S/O works because it has an ingredient called Sodium Bisulfate that acidifies the bladder. It is also very commonly used as a pool cleaner.
      A much much healthier way to do this is to feed raw food - a raw diet will acidify the digestive tract naturally, without the use of pool cleaners :)

    • @ProximaSun
      @ProximaSun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Just same with baking soda its used mostly in cleaning but then we eat them on our baked goods. Just bec it is being used in some other products that you know doesnt mean that it is not safe anymore. We are not food formulators and we lack expertise in terms of these matters, so we cant just tell people about our own personal belief.

    • @laurens422
      @laurens422 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ProximaSun No matter which way you slice it, Royal Canin is worse for your pet than a prepared raw diet.
      It is higher in carbohydrates - with even the wet food as high in carbs as a lot of kibbles are - and contains filler ingredients like corn, which can carry the danger of aflatoxin poisoning - it's already killed 70 dogs this year alone just from a single brand. Their wet food also contains carrageenan, a known carcinogen, and xantham gum which has been linked to colitis and IBD.
      I understand we are not food formulators. But a lot of large company food formulators are in it for the money, not the pet health. Evidence is pretty clear of that considering how full Royal Canin is of corn and byproducts, rather than quality ingredients.
      My cats have been on the Primal brand raw diet for 5 years now and it has completely solved every single one of their issues. I have switched numerous other cats to raw food as well and sure enough, it has solved their issues as well. Luckily more and more holistic vets are popping up who are willing to talk about raw diets and not push prescriptions. There are plenty of vets nowadays who will advocate for feeding raw - it isn't just "my own personal belief".

    • @ProximaSun
      @ProximaSun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't want my cats to have Salmonella and listeria monocytogenes by feeding them raw, they are domesticated animals and their body is no longer trained to live in the wild.
      Almost all food are carcenogen by default but if mixed with other stuff those possibilites are neutralized, that is why food formualtion is very important.
      Anyway just do what works for you. :)

    When I adopted my kitten I did a ton of research on foods, litters, over all care, Ect weeks before hand to make sure I had a good start for it life. I adopted her at 6 weeks, and I really liked the idea of Royal Canins Mother and Baby Cat wet and dry food because its targeted and formulated at, like the name suggests, mother cats, and baby kittens under 4 months of age. Its the only food i have experience with, but I am very happy with it thus far. The packaging is something i appreciate, its nice that its resealable. I mix half of the caned version with 1/8th a cup of the dry version and my cat loves it. It was pricy. But I do plan on sticking with it, maybe when she outgrows this stage ill look into another brand or type.

    my cat got royal canin (think it was indoor 21?) for years and while reading up on the topic I have tried half a dozen other brands trying to find a healthier kibble. I am not sure it is related but hehas since developed dandruff and an ever persistent case of mild feline acne.
    I stress less about ingredients that do not sound high quality from a human perspective, since I realized that the frozen chicken breast/tenders I eat are less expensive than the kibbles (1kg bag of tenders/breast= ~5USD, 1kg of royal canin ~8USD here in South Korea). I just give him small piece of chicken every other day to make up for its lack in kibbles. Also, I foudn that if he eats too much actual meat, he seems uncomfortable because his poop will turn into steel bricks (yes I read about canned pumpkin but that's only sold as import here and costs ~8usd per 15oz can if you can believe it).
    check your chicken prices! if you are in a similar situation I wouldn't stress too much over kibbles containing animal-byproducts or lack of meat as an ingredient because you can fix that yourself and even save money doing so. I also like to think my cat knows when I'm preparing chicken for him and that he bites me more because he is extra grateful... a man can dream. gotta go massage Lord Dubu now. GL.

    A few years back, Royal Canin SO Urinary helped my cat’s bladder stones dissolve. We kept her on the food for several years but the past couple of years had switched to another food. Unfortunately , our cat very recently developed another bladder stone and urinary infection. The vet wanted her back on the Royal Canin Urinary so we started her on it and she became very ill with vomiting and diarrhea. I was surprised to find out that Royal Canin recently changed their formula and started putting wheat into almost all of their cat foods including the SO Urinary food. My cat has never tolerated wheat and she even had an allergic reaction. I was very upset that Royal Canin would put wheat into their food when they are supposed to be a superior product. Our only other Urinary options were other foods that also contained wheat. We ended up purchasing the Royal Canin SO Urinary Hydrolyzed Protein food. It has no wheat or gluten and our cat is doing well on it. Plus, she loves the new food.

    I’ve been happy with Royal Canin products. My kitten was obsessed with the Persian kitten dry food - there was something about it that made it just absolutely appealing to her as a little baby. Now that she’s older but still technically a kitten I’ve got her on their older kitten dry food (she gets predominantly wet food but gets a small amount of dry food a day) and she likes it as well.
    I had a long talk with my vet about nutrition and she was extremely enthusiastic about Royal Canin for kittens but recommends switching to a grain free dry food when my kitten turns one. So that’s my plan.

    I wonder about the canned version for urinary tract health. I have bought 3 cans for urinary tract health from a Canadian company called 1st Choice, but this food is not always available in pet food stores, but the RC version is. One pet food store I shop at will not shelve foods with a high recall history. RC used to be on their shelves but they removed it and replaced the products with 1st Choice. Vita is still favouring her FF canned foods especially the medleys but I want to slowly get her to shift to the canned food for urinary tract health. At least with FF, there is no carrageenan. Did you know some human foods contain carrageenan? Those butterball turkey loafs contain carrageenan (in their edible plastic wrap).

    One of my cats struggles with anemia. When I put her on a diet of Royal Canin and Fancy Feast wet foods she started gaining muscle mass and her skin and coat looks a lot healthier. From my experience, I would give the food a ten out of ten for meeting bodily needs. In regards to price, I would give them a four out of ten. In regards to taste, I have to give it a ten out of ten because my cats wolf this stuff down. Oddly enough, their favorite food to eat is Friskies Extra Gravy and Chunks. I really appreciated this video. Thank you for being honest with your review even though it definitely could get some hate. Royal canin is a controversial brand and I think many people choose it because someone they trust recommended it to them. It is very nice to see someone call them out for the bad ingredients. I agree with many that the cat food industry is so difficult to figure out, and a lot of the time there really isn’t a best option. I think vets are taught in school by leaders of these big companies and therefore are really biased. If the company has research showing the food works it makes the vet not responsible if there are issues. My kitties are still on their journey to finding the perfect food, I am hoping for some better raw food options to convert them too. We have been trying Stella and chewys frozen raw (not freeze dried) and it is really hard to find reviews for this. We have been giving it to them along with their normal wet food and they seem to like it but I would love for you to review raw food options so I could learn more about all this. Thanks!

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Lisa, that's a great question. The Persian kibble may be slightly easier for a flat-faced cat to pick up and eat. It's formulated with additonal fatty acids to support coat health and claims to offer highly-digestible ingredients to support GI health, which may be particularly valuable for Persians who tend to ingest more hair during grooming. All of this said, you could get many of the same benefits from choosing another non-breed-specific food that happens to deliver highly-digestible protein and omega-rich fish oil. Overall, this type of breed-specific food may have some benefits, but I'd like to see more tests before making a final call on whether or not they're worth it.

    On royal canin now, but am thinking to switch to nulos medal wet food for my kitten. It says its made for both cat and kitten. I dont know how formulated it is for a kitten and was wondering if you recommend?

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi A T, foods formulated for all life stages generally contain a bit higher levels of minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium-all of which are needed for kittenhood development. Nulo's foods are among our top recommendations for kittens, so I'd go for it!

    Hi. Appreciate what you are doing. Found your site recently and I quite like it.
    Apologies for multiple comments in the other thread. I don't mean to cause problems. But I thought it was important.
    P. S. I tried your link to the recall emails. Will it work for South Africa? I am on mobile Firefox if that matters. Will try again when I wake up... It's getting late... or early? I must get to sleep... /grin

    I have 4 cats at home. They both eat wet and dry cat food. When picking their food I look into the ingredients list and try to pick those with highest amounts of protein coming from animal sources. I avoid brands such as Royal canin and purina. This works well for 3 of the cats, but 1 of them (Maine Coon female 1 yo) doesn’t seem to react very well. She eats a lot and seems to enjoy the food but her poop is like an atomic bomb. 😢 I was considering trying one of these sensitive foods from Royal Canin even though I don’t trust their food… but I don’t know. Any tips?

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your vet recommended it, I'm assuming that they have some form of urinary issues or a history thereof. While it shouldn't hurt a healthy cat, it's generally not necessary for a cat with zero history of or predisposition to urinary tract disease.

    This is off topic and not about that food. But you think you can help me? I have a kitten currently on science diet from hills & he don’t seem to like it he barely eats. What do you recommend for me to try for kibble. Do you know anything about the instinct brand dry food for kittens would that be a healthy and delicious choice for him..? Please help lol

      First off, have you ruled out any health issues? Inappetence could be a symptom of problems. Assuming that your kitten is otherwise doing well, I would absolutely recommend Instinct by Nature's Variety dry food! Theirs is one of the best kitten foods on the market.

      He just got checked everything went well but after that appointment he stopped eating so well. I just got him a week ago btw appointment was on Friday a couple days ago. But he plays and act completely normal but just doesn’t eat well. But thank you I actually went and got it today seems like it could be working but we’re getting there. Another question is wet food okay to always have everyday? He seems to like wet food (instinct kitten brand ) in his dry food so I mix it in order for him to eat ,is it okay to always do that or should I try to just get him use to dry food more than wet?

      Pretty M ,I have a similar kitty who is now 7 years very very picky needs variety in flavors not a fan of gravies pates only and shreds I too went thru a lot of high end expensive tins and kibble ,it came down to Purina pro plan kibble the wet was also liked but comes in limited flavors until she started throwing up too much undigested kibble started on sensitive stomach dry but I think the brand didn't sit well over the years now is on royal canin sensitive stomach dry cat food , royal canin and Purina proplan are highly accepted by picky eaters from my own cats experiences, as far as wet goes fancy feast has a bad rap but honestly if the cat likes it and no tummy turmoils it's an affordable option for multiple cats and they seem to like the flavors as well lots to select from out there but after breaking an arm and a leg these brands seem to sit well withy cats .proplan is a good option it's easily accepted by cats as long as their system accepts it . Have tried instinct,wellness ,solid gold and some more ,some cats like small kibble ours prefer the larger ones so size wise both royal canin and Purina proplan are winners .Good luck with kitty hope u find whats palatable to her!

    I totally agree with you and thank you for the great review.
    The food, Simba likes to eat at the moment and does very well with his "outtakes" ;) are the "Sterilized" and the " Beauty" one. Well, I don´t really like this kind of foods and would love to feed him foods of higher quality. We tried so much on the market, nearly everything you can buy or do by yourself....but he don´t like it or can´t eat it without many issues. He is a Maine Coon boy and what I learned so far ( maybe helpful for other people too :) ) is: that many cat breeds ( especially when they´re 100% pure ) have problems with many kinds of cat food. Well, good to know, that he isn´t sick or something ( not at the moment, lucky me ). He is just a 5 year old 100% ( sterilized of course ) Maine Coon cat boy. :) Oh and I can´t use two different brands at the time...if the time is there...sometimes after a few month or so...we need a new product....damn, oops sorry.....but ...Royal Canin is the one, which works the longest time so far. :) Hopefully a little longer or so :)

    so i recently adopted 2 kittens and in their very first week of adoption took them to a vet to make sure their overall health was okay. I told the vet thatI plan to have the kittens on wet food diet and offer kibble only as treats during clicker training. She said once the kittens reach adult cat weights she wants me to think about having kibble as part of their diet so that they get a good volume of food without it being very calorie dense. I told her I was concerned that dry food would mean they'd be susceptible to UTIs. She said thats mostly genetic but for most cats dry food is ok and she even feeds her own cats dry food. Im so confused because all the cat people inlcuding you, jackson galaxy etc all are really cautious about dry food. What do you make of this?

    Hi 🙂
    I was wondering if you’ve heard of Nutrience cat or dog food. It’s very available here in New Zealand but seems to be a Canadian brand... It’s seems to be one of the better choices of pet food even over Royal Canin or Hills etc. If you are familiar could you please do a review? I personally believe it’s one of the best brands of cat or dog food out there but I value your opinion 🙂
