My mother grew up with Sam Cooke and dated his brother L.C. When she would reminence about those days and my older brothers were in the room, they would leave. They heard it so many times.

i must comment on R.H. Harris as I am almost speechless that there is actual footage of him singing in his heyday! Sam Cooke is my all time favorite, and I had read that Harris was his hero. RH. Harris's voice is simply heavenly, pure, powerful, versatile, simply incredible. This video material is a true cultural/historical/musical blessing!

Wow, talk about Back down memory lane, I remember listening to the gospel singers early sunday morning as we got ready to go to sunday school, Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers were my favorite male group, Clara Ward and the ward singers was my favorite female group, On Saturday at noon the down home hour would come on @ 12 noon, it was on the air for only one hour, which wasn't long enough for me.So grateful that my parents introduced us to gospel music, took us to church, prayed and pleeded the blood of Jesus over our lives. Had it not been for them don't know where I'd be.... thank you for up uploading this fantastic video.

Sam Cooke was/is indeed one of the greatest things to not just happen to music, but to humanity. The songs he wrote/sang were so relevant and conscious... especially towards the end of his career/life with treasures such as "If I Had A Hammer", Bob Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind" which inspired "A Change Is Gonna Come", and "Keep Movin' On", etc. May the soul of music's greatest musician truly rest in peace.

It's a sad commentary that the British, obviously not blinded by bigotry like the Americans, appreciate the excellence of this music, more than the country of their birth. Not much has changed. in America.

    • @jamescampbell9533

Covers of songs out of copyright is not theft. It’s simply a cover. If it sells records, the writer of the song gets royalties, not the singer. Bands earn money for live performances, not selling records.

@Michael Harrison While I do not condone the OP remarks, IMO the UK has plenty of bigotry, neither do I agree with your comment "they all stole from black folks". In the late 50s and early 60s, many British musicians adored the African American blues which were all but ignored by mainstream American audiences. These musicians took that music, turned it around and sold it back to America. For example, Howlin' Wolf got his National US TV break as a direct result of The Rolling Stones insistence on his appearing on the Shindig show with them in 1965.

It's odd that when Sam and Dick are standing, they are of a similar height. When they sit down, however, Dick is a good head taller. I think that the seating is arranged so as to not see the black man as an equal.

or it might be that the interviewer holding a large mic might actually want to see the artist and be able to converse where it works for the camera angle. Dick didn't play those petty games, plenty of examples of black artists being made to degrade themselves on shows, this is not one of them.

@@JClaus1221 we all liked Dick Clark. I watched him every weekend, however even though he had some say so about how things would be run, that doesn't mean he didn't have to do the things behind the scenes that had to be done in those days.

2 questions Was it Sam idea to go to the motel? If so you can squash the set up theory. The other question did the woman who killed him realize who he was before she shot him or did she think when he signed into the motel as Sam Cooke it wasnt the real Sam ?

Could it be that crooked record producers and other shady types in the music industry set him up and had him killed, using his own people to do the dirty deed, keeping their hands "clean?"
