A closer look at John Deere’s massive C850 Air Cart

  • The new C850 Air Cart from John Deere was on display at the 2017 Commodity Classic and the Farm News Media team caught up with Tyson Harris, product manager, John Deere.. With a total 850-bushel (30-cu m) capacity, it covers 170 acres (69 ha) per fill with accuracy beyond measure. The C850 delivers 550 lbs. (249.5 kg) of material per acre directly to all eight primary lines, precisely metering product into the primary air stream for greater consistency, more even emergence, more flowering and canopy, and greater yields. Everything is designed to seamlessly work together for easy, smart, precise operation.     Well it sure beats re-loading the bins every 40 acres with bags or augers or both. But these things are getting to an almost unmanageable size, that being way to big and heavy for old County roads.

    As it is really heavy duty to pull such drill trains, particularly on hills and in wet conditions, you need really strong and heavy tractors. Existing tractors in practical situaion are not allways sufficienty equiped and satisfying to do such job. Apart from causing damage to the soil and seed bed, because of lots of slip and weight needed to get the power there.
    Therefore suggesting to think of another option and develop and design a cart that is self propelling. Either with an own dedicated engine, or by putting hydraulic or electric propulsed wheels / axles at the cart, etc.
    One may like other, possibly cheeper and smarter options, than just growing the pulling tractors bigger and bigger, but make use of the weight of the cart and make its wheels self propelling?
    There is so much weigth already in the drilling train. It could be an idea to think differently. As the carts are so heavy and put so much weight on the ground, isn't it an idea to use that weight and make them (at one or two axles) self-propelled? It will reduce slip, it will reduce overall weight, it will reduce the number of stalls and stucks and inefficiencies because less help throughout the day is needed from others (if available anyhow). Further it may avoid that the cart pulls the seed drill aside in a bend, in a corner or on a side of hill, etc., improving your actual drill operation. Ofcourse to get there, there is an engineering challenge for cart / drill manufacturers like Bourgault, John Deere and else. For that one need a power unit at the drill or hydraulic or electricly propelled wheels. It could be interesting for them to produce a test version and test it on your farm 😉.

      Our farm runs one of these on some pretty hilly terrain and it actually performs quite well, I had similar concerns that you do and thought we would even need to upgrade our 9560RT but it performed quite well.

      What are you pulling that Bourgault with? There isn’t a tractor large enough to pull that tank full. The Bourgault 91300 is Bourgault’s wet dream of a seeder.

      @@MrTysonjharris A 9640R/RX can handle it decently well and a Steiger/Quadtrac 620 will have no problem pulling it.

      @@joshuadoll9000 you need 6 hp per opener on the drill and 100 hp for the cart. A 9620 doesn’t get it done. Not even on the plains of Sask. You can’t load the 1300 completely full and pull a drill over 80 feet. Productivity is a function of speed, drill width and length between fills. If you have an 80 foot drill and 1300 tank and pulling it at 2.5 mph you’re better off with a 76’ drill and 850 (900 actually) tank at 4.5 mph. If you’d ever pulled one of of these you’d know what I’m talking about. For fun, take common seed rates and tell me how you’d fill each tank compartment and how many acres you get per fill versus the doing it with the 850 ;) that’s why the 850 is king.

      @@MrTysonjharris Yes it will, quite well actually. Just because a manufacturer recommends a certain HP doesn't mean you won't get by with less HP, you just may have to operate slower. It's not like if you suddenly get 1HP below the recommended HP that it can't pull it anymore, it will just be pulling harder. Quite frankly the 6HP/foot of drill is pretty generous and more likely for hillier terrain; if you're operating on flat ground you can get away with 5HP/foot but 5.5HP/foot is pretty good and able to handle slight hills. There's a lot of factors to consider when picking a tractor for a drill; you can't use such a general statement that a drill needs X amount of HP to operate. Soil conditions, tractor set up (tracks, tires, tire PSI, weights, etc.) and land topography all factor into making those decisions.

      @@JalenRose02 yeah sure. That's why they still mould board plow...Slower and wider is easier on equipment, the operator and in many cases performs better in terms of uniform seed placement. And when you run so much wider, even at slower speeds, your effective field capacity is equal to or greater than the euro stuff. The European model of faster and narrower is not by choice because it's superior, it's because of road width regulation. I bet if they could run like the US they would.

      John DEERE have never released anything before anyone else what the do well is build something and release it later than others so it performs from day one. This doesnt alway eradicate problems but hopefully minimizes them.
      In saying that i dont like their cultivator tyne assemble. It wobbles to much side ways in the ground and its a flat tyne which is more ridgey and has more drag resistance which is a killer on tractor pulling power. What tgey need is a good edge on ryne assembly.

    It's always bothered me that the seed cart comes behind the drill. It seems to me that the smartest way would be to have the seed cart in front of the drill.

      More important to have highly precise maneuverability with the drill than the slight bit of compaction with the cart. If you put the cart in front of the drill the drill would become exceedingly hard to control sort of like trying to control a boat behind a fifth wheel.
