Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Tabletop Maker's Vise!

  • Adam adds a new vise to his workbench: a versatile Instrument Maker's Vise designed to grip flat or cylindrical workpieces at different precise angles. This vise is actually a kit from Hemingway, and putting it together becomes a machining adventure unto itself! But the journey is well worth it as Adam couldn't be happier with the finished kit and the machining lessons and experience he gained along this build!

      Maybe Universal got a little IP anxiety? One could argue that (and I would agree with them) how can someone claim ownership of a dinosaur form and the puppetry to make it a human wearable custome? While that sounds like a healthy to have and even winnable argument, if my guess is correct, it would be against the team of lawyers specializing in IP protection that a company like Universal must employ. To me that sounds like a very very very expensive and long long long argument to potentially win.

    Taking the time to step up drill bit sizes to the final hole always drove my boss batty for the extra time it took; also, "Why was I always asking for new 1/16" bits?" [mostly dealing with fairly precise adaptations/modifications of plastic enclosures by hand - though sometimes aluminum, occasionally steel] Also, starting smaller can let you correct any mistakes; if the hole goes out of round or you find it off-center, you still have the material to file/carve/etc. the hole back on center allowing the next bit(s) to bring it back into compliance.
    Yet I never heard a complaint about my results... or a compliment that 99 44/100% of time I didn't have to start over with new material.
    Top 5 reasons for the fails I did have:
    1) Being rushed.
    2) Cheap plastic that was laminated in the casting process & peeled. (Can also be caused by #4)
    3) Being in a hurry.
    4) Dull drill bits. (they wander)
    5) Not taking the time to do it right.
    Last bit of advice - for sheet metal and thin panels, step bits are your friend. (I still start with 1/16" pilot, and work my way up to the 3/16" or matching "starting" dia. of the step bit as needed.)

    While going to school for engineering, we were taught 1/2 turn and then a 1/4 turn back when tapping. When running a tap by machine... keep your hands well back and trust that you didn't screw up the setup.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or that the tap doesn't explode, sending shrapnel everywhere. Which does happen 1 out of 60 or so taps when doing it on a dumb machine. One thing i love CNCs for, not having to deal with machine tapping anymore. I have a set of programs, depending on taps/material. Press Start, count my fingers.

    Space Cowboys is on TV tonight in the UK, well, Scotland (on ITV4), am doing my damnedest to spot the Universal Greeblie right now :) I'd like to say thanks to you Adam and to all of the crew at Tested who make this channel possible. Thanks for keeping us all entertained during the pandemic, I've enjoyed many many hours of watching your stuff over the last year, I can tell it's a lot of hard work, and war wounds :-o. I hope things get back to normal for us all soon. I know you have a gazillion projects all going on at once but I would love to see you do an Aliens APC scratch build at some point in the future. All the best.

    Hi Adam,
    I just love your videos. Your upbeat style just lifts my spirit every time, and I find myself imagining having a workshop like yours with all those amazing machines. Of course I would go entirely metric, because those imperial mesurements are just a mystery to me 😉
    All my best to you and those around you!

    "I'm just gonna spin my deal"..ahh the satisfaction of parts fitting together so perfectly they become one assembly. Great content Adam! I love the old school machining. Every machinist has (or should have) a copy of the "Machinery Handbook" this is the "Machinist's Bible". I'll bet Adam has this somewhere close to his mill or lathe :)
    I love the pool table (I think it is a Brunswick Gold Crown). Adam's pool table has a space suit on it...mine has a race track...LOL
    Be safe and have fun!
    Cheers,

      The first rule of sound engineering is do not make tolerances any tighter than they need to be. Otherwise you are prone to run into troubles like Adam did for a bit. But it may have been simply a case of no oil on the surfaces? Metal on metal likes oil.

    If you're seeing sparks when machining cast iron you're cutting it too fast. Lower the spindle speed and take your time with the cut, otherwise your tools will dull quickly

      it looked like he did slow down after that first cut... also when milling rough castings that outer scale can be super hard and it only sparked that one time which was the first time so idk.. as for the drilling hes doing fairly small holes here and smaller drills want more rpm that along with slowly stepping up sizes and his drills look like some high quality pieces u can't buy at lowes or harbor frieght so i think it'l b fine... youtube armchair machinist be like "IT'S NEVER FINE😲😲... EVERYONE DOES EVERYTHING WRONG!!! SAFETY GLASSES!!!!!!!!"

    @adamsavage
    Something that may help your tapping experience on the mill is:
    Spindle speed at 70rpm,
    Tapping fluid,
    Lower quill by hand into part and apply gentle downward pressure (1 finger resting on quill handle),
    When tap breaches bottom of hole with lead of tap fully exposed turn off mill and then apply spindle break,
    Turn mill on in reverse and apply gentle upward pressure (same amount as on down stroke but upwards) untill tap exits hole.
    This will give you more control over depth of tap and not running out the other side and also removes the tap for you so you dont have to back it out by hand.
